Old XP computer+360=Profit?

JokermanJokerman Registered User regular
So here's the deal.

We currently have a Vista Desktop, and a Vista laptop in my house, and a 360 that I use to stream music to my 5.1 stereo,
HOWEVER,
I also have an ancient E-Machine running XP that I would love to tie into the network and use it as my dedicated music server.

Is this retarded? Will XP play nicely with Vista? What do I need to download?

I appreciate all and any help you can give.

I have XP and I use Windows Media Player 11 to stream music to my 360/other computers, works just fine for me.

I have my previous computer in a closet running TVersity and hooked up to a Seagate 500b external hard drive. Feeds right into the WiFi and it holds nothing but the OS (XP) and every piece of music and video I have.

Works great, and keeps the new computer from having to dirty its hands. Truth be told you could do the same thing with your primary system without much trouble, but its nice to have it always active and out of sight.

If it's an Emachine, it probably came with a budget priced (and budget sized) hard drive, so if you were planning on using that computer for digital media, you would have needed to buy a much bigger hard drive anyway.

You can score a 500GB IDE hard disc fairly cheap if you shop around. You won't need a high performance drive to stream media from.

I just got a 500GB IDE off of NewEgg that I use to stream media, works great for me and it was priced nicely.
