Has anyone played the PS2 Cowboy Bebop?

I remember seeing this on gametrailers back in high school and then...it never came out.

Well apparently it did in Japan. I thought Bebop was pretty popular, what with it spearheading Adult Swim back in the day. But I guess Bandai didn't give a shit. IT's sad that Ubisoft didn't get their hands on that license the way they did for Naruto.

Anyway has anyone imported it and played it? Does it suck?

I'm glad it didn't come out in America, personally.

Less sales and recognition of Cowboy Bebop may mean that the planned live-action film will never ever come to pass.

According to gamefaqs the game came out 3 years ago. Cancelled for the US though.

The screenshots make it look pretty cool but why would anyone import it? You'd be stuck with the japanese voices and everyone listens to the english dub right? I like to think that even the people over in japan listen to the english dub.

Hi, you are the wrongest anyone has ever been as far as I can recall. If you were any wronger, you'd be right!
edit- Call me an "anime purist" if you want, I think the "genre" (which isn't even a genre) is mostly filled with comic book level drivel at best, (I don't even want to talk about some of the crimes against humanity I've witnessed) but you can cherry pick some really good stuff, Bebop an example (it's a pretty short list which for me consists of Hayao Miyazaki's work and Cowboy Bebop and to a lesser extent Ghost in the Shell) In any case, anime is as much of a genre as "American Television", a fitting comparison because for every Arrested Development you have a mountain of unfettered shit or indefinite redundant milking of a mediocre concept.

But if you're going to take the time to watch anything I can't see how you'd tolerate mutilating the language- changing entire sentences just so they fit the cadence of a different script. Not to mention how awkward it sounds to hear Midwesterners pretending to act like Japanese characters...and say what you will about "Spike" and "Faye", they're basically Japanese archetypes and Bebop is a very Japanese show.

Anyway, if you watch the show in Japanese, Spike doesn't sound like a Solid Snake voice clone, the va is more subtle. But even great English dubs are inherently stilted and limited and there really is no other excuse for dubs other than laziness to read subtitles if you're willing to forgo a better, more reliable translation and allow the context of stuff to be somewhat molested at times (which you are)

I guess so. I tried listening to the original voices once but I just can't do it. Every english voice just seems to fit for me, Jet in particular. Didn't the creator(s) also say they liked the english voices or something? I don't know, I don't keep up with the series anymore. I just watch the Pierrot episode whenever it's on Adult Swim.

Bebop lends itself more to dubbing because of the multicultural setting, but I don't see how this makes it a less Japanese show, and there are things that do not translate well at all, like the comic relief with Ed, a lot of Faye's characterization, etc. For me there's a fundamental disconnect when I hear voices trying really hard to portray something in a cultural context that they basically can't.

With devoted fans all over the world, and a complex universe to depict on screen, Reeves knows that it won’t be easy to make a “Cowboy Bebop” movie. “Yeah,” he grinned when reminded of these facts. “But that’s why you want to do it.”

The only way I would accept Reeves (or anyone else) in a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie is if they do it with rotoscoping, A Scanner Darkly-style.

The only way to make a Cowboy Bebop movie is to remake it and adapt the concept and not stupidly try to make a direct adaptation of something from a different country because that approach always FAILS HARD (see: Speed Racer)

Spielberg's Ghost in the Shell, James Cameron's Battle Angel Alita, and Leo DeCaprio's Akira are all in various stages of pre-production still.

And Speed Racer was good as long as you actually wanted a remake that was true to the show. I loved it. I guess most people were expecting it to be dark and mature or something. Instead it was Speed Racer.... in Live Action.

Only about thirty times more repetitive, worse controls, and inane puzzle sequences.

Anyway the movie is supposed to be a 2 hour adaptation of the first episode, or so they say. No Faye, Ed or Ein in that. Also that's one of my favorite episodes, so I'm pretty happy about it.

Also, I saw speculation that they were going to edit the first episode's premise into the overall Spike storyline, and make it so the red dragon cartel have a lot of involvement with Red Eye smuggling and shipments.

Honestly Reeves is probably the only guy who i could see as Spike, he has the attitude and he could pull off the look. Spike is not Japanese after all so him being played by an american actor is not as much of a stretch as it is for the Dragonball movie.

I'm intrigued, but its only because Bebop could be pulled off as a live action movie if it was actually done right, it isnt a hokey and cheesy as Dragonball is, and it isn't based on a Chinese myth like Dragonball, so American actors are 100% passable in the Bebop mythos.

He added that Stoff and the development team have already hired a writer who is penning a scene outline. Right now, the outline includes a drug, developed by the military, that is partially based on an element from the anime. Reeves explained, "We're taking the Red Eye [story], the beginning part of the series." He acknowledged that the episodic nature of the story will be difficult to adapt into a feature-length work: "[…] It's got so much of an origin-story obligation; you've got to get people up to speed, but you don't want to do much of that. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, but we think we can do something good."

Reeves is self-professed fan of anime and science fiction. He personally attended the opening day of the first (and last) North American branch of Japan's ANIMATE store chain in Los Angeles on December 23, 2000. He also reprised his Neo role from The Matrix in the Japanese-animated "Kid's Story" segment of The Animatrix video anthology. Not coincidentally, "Kid's Story" was directed by Cowboy Bebop director and co-scriptwriter Shinichiro Watanabe.
