My father is really into Ghandi and his way of life/manner of thinking/philosophy, etc.
What would be a good book that focuses on philosophy of a similar nature to Ghandi's?
Self-improvement books aren't what I'm hoping for, necessarily. But rather general books on philosophy.
For example, he loved "The Art of Happiness."
Thich Nhat Hahn might be up his alley. He's a Vietnamese Zen monk, has worked as a peace activist. His books explore various aspects of living mindfully.

I was coming in here to say the same thing! He has some great writings (though you can definitely tell something is lost in translation, the message is still there). Definitely recommended.

Ghandi himself was inspired by Henry David Thoreau's Resistance to Civil Government, also known as Civil Disobedience.

Also, the classic novella-length philosophical fiction that is important reading is the novel, Siddhartha.
Similar philosophical concepts though dissimilar religious premises. As far as I remember.
