So I really enjoy the "virus/disease spreading throughout the world, must stop it in time!" kind of movies and I'm wondering what other movies there are in this same vein. I've watched the new Andromeda Strain movie and although kinda silly, I enjoyed it all the same. So what else might there be?

What was the older movie where the scientists have to decent into a laboratory - and each level has a different way of sterilizing them, and at the very bottom lab they are researching a new organism or virus.
I know one of the levels had them hit with ultra-violet light that burned off their outer most layer of skin and they were covered in ash.
When I was a little kid, I always pretended I was the hero,' Skip said.
'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
The Andromeda Strain is a 1971 science-fiction film, based on the novel published in 1969 by Michael Crichton about a team of scientists who investigate a deadly organism of extraterrestrial origin that causes rapid, fatal blood clotting. Directed by Robert Wise, the film starred Arthur Hill, James Olson, Kate Reid, and David Wayne. The film follows the book closely. The special effects were designed by Douglas Trumbull. A young Michael Crichton makes a cameo appearance in a non-speaking role during the scene where Dr. Hall is told to break scrub because he has to report to Wildfire, the government's secret underground research facility.
Mmm! I watched the newer remake of it but haven't seen the old one yet. I'll check out the other suggestions too, 12 Monkeys has come up before but I've never seen it. Thank you and keep 'em coming! Still got several weeks of Christmas holiday
There's a really good one I'm thinking about but I can't particularly recall the name. It's kind of old and it's one guy (a scientist) who quarantines himself in a hospital to prevent the disease from spreading to others.
It's set in New York.
I hate to give away the ending but it's the only thing I remember clearly. He says something like, "It's in the birds! The birds are carrying it!" or some such, and realizes that his quarantine has been largely useless.
Oh yeah, I'd also recommend the Canadian TV series called ReGenesis, starring Ellen Page, if you can find it. It's got a few seasons (I'm not sure if they're still making it) and it basically revolves around a CDC-like operation that tries to contain viral outbreaks.
There was also another TV series with a similar theme made by some of the writers of the X-Files. The main character worked for USAMRIID in it.

28 Days Later/28 Weeks Later are both awesome, only they aren't exxxxxxxactly what you're looking for.
It was awesome because it was so campy. I saw it in the theater with a few friends, and we all went in expecting a somewhat serious horror movie. We got the giggles during the opening credits - we'd had a few beers and I think one of the leads being "Rider Strong" or something set us off. By 30 minutes in we were crying we were laughing so hard.
On a related note, the DVD has an amazingly funny animated bit in the special features. When we watched it, it started up without warning after the DVD was played, and we felt like we were going crazy - no idea what it was or why we were watching it, but it was hilarious.
Zombie Diaries
Blindness (but it doesn't come out on dvd until Feb)
Quarantine (again in feb)
The Omega Man (see I am Legend)
The Happening
Virus
Pulse
There was a British TV series in the 70s that I never saw called Survivors which dealt with the aftermath of a pandemic. Looks like it's been reimagined recently too.
I was about to say I hope no one recommended the Happening. I only watched it because I like getting drunk and watching really really bad movies.
I liked Cabin Fever...it was funny, didn't take itself seriously but was still entertaining. A lot of people don't like it. I'm not a big horror movie fan though.
You should read "Y the Last Man". It's a comic not a movie, but good.
If you like stuff with viruses and you also like action and also a movie that doesn't take itself too seriously, try picking up Resident Evil: Degeneration. It is the all CG one done by Capcom so it's faithful to the games. I know the NA blu-ray release is on the 27th, I'm not sure about DVD.
It's good for light watching and zombies in an airport.
I don't know about the miniseries, but The Stand is a pretty solid bit of storytelling.

I Am Legend was reasonably entertaining. The alternate ending on the DVD made it a better move than the theatrical release. It diverges pretty significantly from the book, but it's not bad.

It's a very poor remake of Omega Man more than a movie based on the novel. They basically stripped the main story out. I really liked the first 30 minutes though, very very well done.
The Signal is another one. Not sure if it's what you are looking for:
"When the phones, radios and TVs in the city of Terminus begin to broadcast the same strange signal, the transmission causes jealousy and hate to spew, turning once sane people into murderous lunatics. Trapped in a world gone mad, a faithless wife seeks the safety of her lover, while her affected husband hunts for her. David Bruckner, Jacob Gentry and Dan Bush each write and direct an act of this bloodthirsty horror tale, nominated for a John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award."

from what I can read, the directors cut ending is signifantly better, and closer to the book.

None of the above. The closest to the book is probably I am Legend the the TC. Each have their big differences but the farthest from the book is the DC. I almost puked a little inside watching the DC. It completely negates meaning of the name of the movie, though all but Omega man negate the message the writer was trying to achieve. The DC ending was better in the sense that it was a better fit for this version of the movie but they needed to change the name much like Omega Man.
I am legend was supposed to be the main characters understanding that to these vampire peeps he was the new Myth, the New Legend, the new boogey man. Its supposed to show you perceptive and to one person you might be a hero but to another villain.

28 Days later is a great movie. Scary but not stupid scary.
As for 28 weeks later I did not even know there was such a movie.
And you are a better man for it. I liked 28 days later and I think its a better fit for this kind of discussion. 28 weeks later is a full budget Studio sequel that outside the first 20 minutes might as well be called Dawn of the Dead.
The original Andromeda Strain is dated but definitely full of awesome.
Pulse, the original Japanese movie, aka 'Kairo' or 'Circuit' is good.
Pulse, the American remake, is terribad.
I agree with a lot of the recommendations so far, and I wanted to throw in And The Band Played On... as it's about the panic and hysteria surrounding a real-life plague: HIV.
Feral on
every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

The new one is quite good, but it's really all about the aftermath, and not so much the "stop it in time!" stuff.

Eh, I liked it. It's a very different movie from Days, but still very good in it's own right.

Forget it...
And apparently they are making a movie out of this one.

Entertaining flick about a bio-bomb in LA.
The ending is like... wtf?
