PS1 on the PSP and PS3. Pricing on page 7!

edited May 2007 in Games and Technology
Just thought I'd clear up the whole thing. Apparently, the PS1 games you download for the PSP, aren't straight rips of the original. They've taken the core game and retooled it for the PSP control scheme and capabilities. That's why the PS3 can't run them straight away, they'll need to develop the PS3 ones seperatly. Also, the PSP will require a 3.0 firmware update (which comes out at the end of the month). I agree the 5 dollar pricing is pretty good though. I'm glad I got a one gb memory stick. (too bad I bought mine for 80 dollars, and now they're about 20)

So, thoughts, speculation on launch titles for the download service? (Well obviously ff7, but what else?)

Maybe I'm missing something, but what about the PSP's control scheme precludes the game from running on the PS3? I mean, the PS3 controller has a d-pad, four face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and an analog stick, correct? What am I missing?

I don't know exactly. Probably formatting for screen size, shrinking the game, ect.

It seems like FF7 would be a bit big for one of the first games on the service. Was it actually announced?

It wasn't officially announced, but it's a game ripe for speculation. And it came out nearly ten years ago. I'm sure they can shrink it down.

I think you guys might be giving Sony a little too much credit for making this good.

In theory, it sounds fantastic, but I'm scared.

Scared that the updates will mess up homebrew/utilility programs/cheat devices.
Scared that the updates will make certain games and features unplayable/gimped.
Scared that the games will cost whatever each company that owns the IP feels is proper.
Scared that there will be additional costs added to PSX games.
Scared that Sony will have complete control over my consoles and games due to updates.

It just makes me paranoid, and since this is coming from Sony, I'm more than just a bit apprehensive. It feels like a trap.

    fix'd

It's what they've been doing anyway. I have the most up to date firmware as is because I want to play the new, good games. This isn't going to change much... aside from the awesome ability to play PS1 games without having to pay cutthroat prices for the rare gems.

I found reVerse's review to be too short and a little light on content and quality. Still, his punctuation and sentence structure was better than most.

I think it depends on how much volume they are looking to move with this. Sony wants to make a fuckton of money, if they think they can do this with volume instead of lower # of customers with a higher price, they will do it. Hopefully this is the model that are looking at.

I'm more concerned about the control scheme actually working on the PSP since a number of games used all four shoulder buttons and then there's the games later on in the PS-X's life that used the dual analog.

Have they actually said anything on how that's gonna work?
