Kistra, I think you may have missed most of the butterflies. I saw a random Agrias the other day, but I haven't seen common/yellow/tiger/peacock/raja brookes in a while. Of course, lately I haven't been playing during daylight, but I'm pretty sure those go away in the summer. (I've only seen one Birdwing total, but at least I caught that bitch).

I saw a tiger yesterday afternoon when I played before class.
And a scorpion sniped me from behind the house beside mine as I was wandering toward the fountain. I didn't realize that I had my net out until the little fucker ambushed me.

I've definitely seen tiger, peacock, raja brooke and emperor within the past week. I think they indeed only come out during the day though.
Still no luck on the damn dorado. I think I've seen it a couple times now (sea-bass sized, quick biter, right?) but no luck. Meanwhile I catch a million gars and arapaimas. Similar story with the napoleonfish--girlfriend has caught six, I've never even seen it. We did both catch two rays in a row though. I didn't even know those were around yet.
The one Napoleonfish I've caught was interesting. That shadow was HUGE. Both Marlins I caught were like that too. I've yet to see either one since, but that's mostly because I've been working on my bugs.

Who the hell came up with this? And did they make it so the townfolk can wear down the grass, too? If not, they might as well have. Turn the place into a desert town faster.
To be fair, they intended for the grass to regenerate much faster, but then someone didn't carry the 2 or whatever in the game's code and here we are. The whole grass deterioration thing was supposed to be a neat little detail where a path you travel often would slowly wear away over time. Little did they know. Clearly they didn't playtest the game for very long.
The way the grass works is that each time you log on, the game remembers where you walked your last session, and wears those parts away a bit (much more if you run). However, the grass only grows back one session each day you play. This means that if you log on several times a day, your grass might suffer for it.
And no, the townfolk don't affect the grass. Only players do.
However, the grass doesn't actually wear down that fast provided you don't run or play too many times in one day. Walking, even at top speed, doesn't seem to really put much wear on grass unless you repeatedly walk over the same area. I play every day and except for the path that's walked over a few dozen times each fishing session, my grass grows back pretty steadily. And I haven't had any visible new wear in months since I instituted my strict "no running" policy. I do mostly stick to paths I made, but my girlfriend doesn't, so I don't think walking does too much damage.
Also, the more worn a spot of grass is, the more vulnerable it seems to wear. Healthy grass doesn't seem to wear away very easily, provided you don't run on it, or walk on it several times a day. If you look close, you can see that slightly worn but mostly healthy grass has a dark brown layer of soil under it. That means it won't wear that quickly and shouldn't be too hard to grow back. However, if that dark brown layer's worn away and only the light brown "desert" is left, then every step you take on it seems to prevent growth. For this reason, if I have to go on the grass, I try to stick to healthy grass, or (contrary to what most people seem to do) on top of flowers. Flowers seem to slow wear as well as quicken growth by something like x5, so walking on one even a few times seems to even out to neutral. I'd rather negate a day of flowered growth process than wear away a flower-less spot that much quicker.
Lastly, grass grows back much quicker in spring and summer, so if you want to try to do some hardcore regrowing, I'd get a move on.

So I had Blanka show up yesterday, I've never seen her before or even knew of her existence. I had to draw in her face and did a terrible job. Any story to this character?
Still, I wish they'd issue a patch or something to carry that "2" or whatever needs to be done.
Unfortunately I think technical issues make patches impossible to do on the Wii. In any case the game's probably not popular enough for them to bother. The funny thing is if I wasn't so obsessed with regrowing the grass I wouldn't be playing this game nearly as much.
Vyolence- Glad to hear the painting made it safe and sound!
Wusoljr- Blanka is just one of the random rotating visitors to the town that can show up in a given day. As far as I know, there isn't any real 'story' behind her. Its just another silly thing to pass the time doing.
Still no luck getting a Tarantula here, either. I spotted three Scorpions and two Tarantulas last night, but two of them dove into the ocean, one lost me in the woods, and the other two I whiffed at with my net and thus ended up getting stung. I do note that they seem to appear a lot more if you walk very slowly, but I can't tell if that's just because they don't spot you and run off as quick, or if there's something else to it. Also they do make a very slight rustling noise if they're nearby, so that can be helpful to try to locate them by.
But don't turn up your TV's volume and try to locate them by sound, and then accidentally bump into a tree where an Oak Silk Moth is perched. The sound is deafening!
Just posting to brag that last night, I finally caught a Tarantula!! It is now safely in my museum- and hilariously, its spending all its time dueling with the Scorpion I already had in there. Its great fun to watch.
Also amusing was how Blathers described the Tarantula as 'docile' and 'not known for attacking people'. So how come I've spent the past month being bitten by them every time I was out at night with my net out?! Answer me, owl!! :P
Incidentally, has anyone here managed to catch a Ray? What do their shadows look like? I keep seeing fishing guides listing the Ray as being around all year, all the time, but I have yet to catch one.

I was playing on my girlfriends game earlier this week (I love AC but unfortunetly don't have a Wii) and caught her a ray. The shadow looks almost exactly like a Sea Bass shadow.

They are huge, like blue marlins.
I have a question, if I have too many trees in some places and not enough trees in others which message will I get?
I got too many trees and then started cutting them down and I am back to getting messages about too few trees. But I don't know if I should plant one or two back where I was cutting them down or if I should plant trees other places.

I'm more or less giving up on that fucking thing. I still have a couple of weeks, but it's a nuisance.
Caught a jellyfish today, though. Bring on September and the salmon! The tarantula (and scorpion, maybe) may deny me my third golden net, but I will not be denied my third golden rod!

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure that the "too many trees" message always overrides the "too few trees" message. When I was going for perfect town status I basically razed the entire forest on Pelly's command before realizing I just had two trees too many in a single acre.
The other day I learned that the Nintendo Channel has a sort of "month in review" of AC:CF, apparently started in July. The current one recaps all of July's events and tells us about August's gifts (both of which we've received by now), then mentions that the anniversary of Animal Crossing is coming up next month, which should be interesting.

Nifty little chart on the wiki is probably horribly outdated...
I haven't had visitors in a while, but that's partially because I've been wasting my time hunting tarantulas and scorpions.
I did venture out into the daylight yesterday and nabbed a Grasshopper and Walking Leaf; no Petaltail but I've got plenty of time for that. Oh, and I caught a Dorado so they're still out there.
TARANTULA GET! With only five days to spare, too...
Golden Net #3 is back in play! Got 'til November to pin down a Scorpion and Petaltail (plus a Bell Cricket and Red Dragonfly, but those aren't exactly rare).
Congrats on the tarantula. I was actually able to catch a second one yesterday. For some reason, it didn't notice me at all, even when I pulled out my net, so I just casually strolled up and swung at it. I took it to Nook's, but it only sells for 8,000 bells? That is an insult.
I still am missing a golden stag beetle, and I'm running out of time. Who the hell thought it was a great idea to include a rare bug that's only available after 11PM and only for two months?

See, that one wasn't a problem for me since I water my flowers at that time (or later) like four or five days a week. But at least the Golden Stag doesn't attack you or wander into the water. Tree bugs are easy if you're paying attention.

I did venture out into the daylight yesterday and nabbed a Grasshopper and Walking Leaf; no Petaltail but I've got plenty of time for that. Oh, and I caught a Dorado so they're still out there.
Golden Net #3 is back in play! Got 'til November to pin down a Scorpion and Petaltail (plus a Bell Cricket and Red Dragonfly, but those aren't exactly rare).
We need your (or your gf) name and town name too.
I play most days right now as I am trying to get my perfect town and I would enjoy visiting and getting some visitors. My info is in my sig.
Actually, you can put anything you want there. The game will automatically correct it when one of you visits the other.
I really need to clean up and update my Friends List. I plan on puzzling with the good Professor Layton tonight, and this weekend is shot, but soon.
Maybe I'll plan a Labor Day blowout or something...
Heh. I'll be two hours away that Saturday. And two weeks later, in Atlanta all weekend. (Once I get things worked out at work... Stupid boss. )
I never knew that. Cool, I will add you tonight then, Cornell. I should be on for a while.
Feel free to add me to your friends list as well, just let me know so that I can add you, Kistra. I don't usually have my gate open (I'm still trying to nab those darn bees!), but I can open the gate or head out to visit whenever.
Kind of odd about that Giant Petaltail- the very first day I looked for it, I nabbed one. And I haven't seen another one since. Of course, I don't often play during daylight hours right now, so that probably doesn't help.
