also creation tutorials say that i have a certain number of points to allocate when making my character, but other than deciding my background, i didn't get to choose much... is apocrypha different in that you get no customization of your character?
In addition to weapons optimal range, they also have a tracking rating which determines how well they can hit fast moving targets.
i wanted to try this first one, and i do have a rocket launcher, but I am unable to equip it due to not being trained, and have no idea where to get the skill.
I tried this second option too... it had no noticeable effect.
ok, where can i buy skills? do i just find them on the market? how do I know i'm getting a good price?
is there a trick to get evemon to work? every time i enter my ID and code, it gives me an error -> is there more to it than copy/pasting?
as a new player, are there specific weapon upgrades that I should be on the lookout for? My general understanding is that one should not mix weapons so as to avoid range penalties.
where do i learn learning skills? same as buying? the market?
i've gotten my second ship through doing missions - I assume eventually you have to buy/build your own ship. How exactly is this done? buying from some industrialist type?
why are all ships ugly except for amarr ships? The only other ones that come close sometimes are Caldari because their blocky nature just makes them look like they mean srs bsns.
ok, where can i buy skills? do i just find them on the market? how do I know i'm getting a good price?
Yes, they're on the market. To find out if it's priced well, click on the item in the market window's sidebar. That should show you all that are available to purchase. Also, yes, you aquire the learning skills through the market as well.
ok, where can i buy skills? do i just find them on the market? how do I know i'm getting a good price?
Yes, if you open the market, there is an entire category of skill books. Learning also. These are npc seeded. If you only see 1 on the market, you may jaunt to another region to check. You may see some MUCH more expensive than others, this is a player trying to scam the the unwary. Some skills are not on the market, but this is a special group and by the time you're looking for them, you'll know why they aren't there. 99% of all skills are on the market.
is there a trick to get evemon to work? every time i enter my ID and code, it gives me an error -> is there more to it than copy/pasting?
What error are you getting in evemon? You should be able to plug in your player ID and API key, then hit the ... button to get it to list your characters.
as a new player, are there specific weapon upgrades that I should be on the lookout for? My general understanding is that one should not mix weapons so as to avoid range penalties.
Usually you don't mix different weapon types like artillery and autocannons because you're trying to keep the same range while also using the bonuses of your ship. You can mix missles/projectors or the like to use up all the highs on your ship while keeping the same range. The idea is to operate at 1 range and use the bonuses of your ship to your advantage against what you're fighting. And weapon upgrades... you use the upgrade for the weapon you have equipped. What upgrade will benefit you the most? Use that one. At early levels it won't be much of a bonus, but later on in fleet warfare, you may be using some damage mods, heatsinks, tracking mods, sensor mods, or the like depending on what you need. Determine what you want/need to boost, then boost it. Just make sure all your weapons are going to be operating at the same range.
where do i learn learning skills? same as buying? the market?
Answer in first question above.
i've gotten my second ship through doing missions - I assume eventually you have to buy/build your own ship. How exactly is this done? buying from some industrialist type?
Yes, usually ship hulls are purchased on the market or through contracts. You can choose an industrialist path and build your own if you like, but this is quite an investment in time and money as you move to battleships, then T2 ships. Usually if you like to fight and not worry about building, you'll buy nearly all your ships on the market or through a contract.
why are all ships ugly except for amarr ships? The only other ones that come close sometimes are Caldari because their blocky nature just makes them look like they mean srs bsns.
Minmatar ships are where it's at you sideways warping weirdo. Personal taste?
This new stuff sounds neat. I had a pilot in merchi (same as username) a while ago, but I think I'm going to make a new character for straight up combat. My old guy was all over the place, mostly mining and stuff though. Will probably bring him back for some hardcore space jewing if I stick around. I'm still downloading the expansion, so i don't have a char name yet.
When there's a ship I want and there's none on the market I usually just ask in corp chat. I say "hey, someone sell me a phoon" and then someone else says "I got one, 68mil sound good?" and I agree and then forget to insure it and get it popped.
Hello I am fairly new to EVE-O and have been recommended here by a fellow pilot to learn the tight-ropes of space flight in new eden. Looking forward to hearing from and meeting you in space,

I would recommend Groon, they are great people to start with.
God. Damnit. I had to go and read the OP. This happens everytime I read a big long post about EVE. It makes me drool and say "I want to do that". I did a trial a while ago (years), and was just overwhelmed and just generally didn't like the early game experience.
But after reading that OP... man. So it's true I can do the tutorial and join up with you guys and SPY I mean actually do stuff? like... fight shit... in space? Cause last time I played it was like mine this, shoot these things, talk to completely idiotic other players and I generally didn't know what to do and just wasn't having fun. But fighting with other PAers and getting in fleet battles sounds terrific.

Ok, so I grabbed the 14-day trial and just love how refined everything is with the latest expansion. I'm seriously going to make an effort to really learn EVE and I've even gone as far as canceling my WoW subscription for the time being. Ok, that wasn't really done for EVE but, hey, I have some extra money (not really) lying around and this seems like a good choice. I'm all done the tutorial and ... I suppose my next destination is going to be a PA recruitment office. I'm a Gallente Jin-Mei and I'm in the Renyn IX system. Which PA office would be the closest to me?
This is all assuming that Merchi is still recruiting, o' course.

its all about the metagame. thats what really makes it interesting
Just to reply to my own post... I found Oursalet to be closest and I dropped by and submitted an application. Um, guess I'll go and follow the Career Funneling in the mean time... and subscribe.

In all honesty how long would it take from starting fresh to actually get into enjoying that stuff?

Honestly, what i like out of any game is cooperative accomplishment. That's what irks me about most MMOs these days, it's "well, just solo shit for a couple months, then you can actually play with other people". From stuff I've read it seemed like EVE was not like that, and that sounded good. As long as I can fly around space and do shit with other people, that sounds great. What I don't want, is to be flying around space alone for a year before I can actually do anything with anyone else.

GS was built on the belief that 1 day old newbies are the best thing to have in fleet.
I think dreads are more like 2 years than 1 yearish, unless it's an alt char you take down the exact path and aren't going minmatar (two gun types) or gallente (need drone skills more than other dreads) My main with 34m sp is still 150d out from a revelation with +4s in , it's absurd :I

I... dude what?
Haha, the lingo in this game hurts my head.
Also, I read earlier that the new character builds that were on the goonswarm wiki weren't valid anymore since the new patch. Suggestions on what to do?

It'd be a shame if you were banished from the universe, we'd have no one to primary any more.

I was about to say something mean, but I noticed you aren't actually applying. So, I guess we'll see ya around.
This career funneling is new to EVE, right? I don't recall it last time I played EVE... not to mention the skill training queue. Man, just playing these funnel missions made me subscribe for the first time to EVE... ever. CCP bastards finally roped me in.
Does anyone else find the training queue to be kind of glitchy as well?

pretty sure the GS Rev sheet is doable in ~400 days with +4's and a neural remap.
So, I'm finding the server to be.... pretty laggy. I just tried to undock and I'm at a black screen. I can press escape to bring up the system menu but even after I logged out and logged back in I still get stuck on the black screen.

Modules, like guns and shield boosters and afterburners.
i.e. stuff you've already been doing.

all depends on what you consider fun.
Tackling - Day
Fleet BS - 5-6 months
Dread - year+
