Any advice for starting out? I tried going to do that Blood Ties quest but it seems like the raiders on the way kick my butt so hard it isn't funny. I did run away from 'em and managed to get to the town, but ... wow. So what quests should I do starting out?

I suggest doing the part of the main quest up to Rivet City. You should get some easy free loot.

:winky:
I did the minefield part when I was low level. The hardest part was getting to the fucking town. I hadn't explored much so I had to pretty much walk all the way there from Megaton.

Yeah, that one is a little tougher. The superduper mart quest is very helpful though.

That's the one I was going to go for. Thanks for the advice so far guys.
I hope you've planned to give her all 30 at once, otherwise just quit now and forget about the whole darn quest. Assuming you don't know the reward already, here's something you should know:
It's a recipe that requires Quantums. Killing her is always an option, just to retake everything you've given, but I stumbled on the very same recipe in the wild, and it's easier to just cut her out of the whole deal.

Pretty sure if you have two schematics it gives you two grenades for the price of one.

Bad idea.
Each schematic increases the number of the grenades produced by 1. There are only three of the schematics in the game.
* Nuka Grenade schematics can be obtained for free via Cliffside Cavern, near the bottom of the map between Tenpenny Tower (to its west) and Andale (to its east). Go through Cliffside to access the Yao Guai Cave (there is no other access). The schematic is on the "ground" floor at the northwestern-most part of the cave, among a pile of skeletons. You can take a shortcut to this point by simply dropping down once you get to the cavern proper, instead of following the wooden plank pathway.
* If you complete The Nuka-Cola Challenge, you can obtain schematics for this weapon.
*NOTE: Sierra Petrovita comments on how she has the ONLY schematics for this grenade, but it's not true.
* The traveling caravaner Doc Hoff also sells the Nuka Grenade schematic. He wears a pre-war suit and appears in front of the various main towns (Megaton, Rivet City, Canterbury Commons, etc.) on a circular route. Note: If Doc Hoff dies (don't worry, you have to be near a caravan trader for the trader to die) you CANNOT retrieve the schematics from his brahmin/inventory. To resurrect NPCs, see this.
* Multiple schematics will increase the number of Nuka Grenades made from a single set of ingredients: Two schematics ("version 2") will make two Nuka Grenades from the same amount of materials, and three schematics will make three grenades. The damage of the Nuka Grenade does not change.

When I said killing her was an option, I meant after you had her loot. Should have made that clearer I guess...
I think the best ending would have been a complete failure.
"See what you worked so hard to do? It didn't work and life still sucks here in the wasteland! Now go find me some nuka-cola."
Because the game is not depressing enough already.
I've been exploring the Wasteland, so I haven't done anything in Rivet City, Megaton, or Underworld in a long time, and now it seems that everybody in Fallout 3 is either an asshole or fodder for assholes.

I don't think you can get the nuka cola quantums back without cheating.

The key to the chest she puts them in does not exist, so the only way to get them back is to use the "unlock" console command.

Either way, there are way more than 30 quantums throughout the wasteland so you're better off in the long run if you give her the 30.
(Still Quantum related, just didn't want to contribute to a bigger quote pyramid)
Heck I could have sworn someone mentioned getting their Quantums back after killing her... I've never tried obviously, but was planning to with this newer character... I guess it makes no difference if I get the schematic anyway.
There needs to be more " freak you the fuck out " random encounters.
Like, Just out of no where, you hear the most horrific howling roaring noise of doom that you literally shit your pants and spend 10 minutes running for cover trying to see what evil uttered such a hellish noise, Only to find nothing
Leaving you to wonder...What evil wanders upon the glowing wastes, and what if I run into it?
That actually happened to me once... except it was an invisible death claw and it killed me repeatedly. That was fucking horrifying. I'm pretty sure it was a glitch, but who knows?
I see your invisible Deathclaw and raise you a flying Deathclaw.
Was running up to the area where the Deathclaw sanctuary is, and there's always one just chilling outside. I go into VATS and start shooting it with my hunting rifle, and each time it does that bullet follow shot as if it was a critical headshot or whatever - except for some reason the Deathclaw was like thirty miles above the world for some reason.
I run off thinking "Whatever" only to have him come flying down right on top of me and start ripping me a new asshole.
Also I ended up getting Ol' Painless from the Republic of Dave and oh my is it a sweet little hunting rifle.
Is is possible to complete the "Superhero" quest in Canterbury Commons (Through siding with the Mechanist to obtain The Protectron's Gaze) at extremely low levels? (Level 3, at best.) By this, I am also wondering if it is possible to even survive the trip there at level three?
Yeah, It does feel like oblivion at first, but this game makes oblivion feel Good, Just give it a chance.(and Mods if you have the PC version)
Its kinda like that weird aunt who bad touches you.
At first its like " omg, no, stay away "
Then its all like " Mm..Well...This is..Okay I guess.. "
Then it ends up with you drooling in a stupor not realizing 18 hours have passed since the last time you got out of your chair.
That's more than a slight exaggeration. Fallout 3 was pretty good, but it's not on par with Weird Aunt Bad Touch.
So you're saying... Weird Aunt Bad Touch... is better than Fallout 3.
Uh huh.
A little late to the party, arntcha? :P
Well, it sounds to me like he never played Weird Aunt Bad Touch, so I don't know how he's making this sort of judgment anyway. It's like writing a review based on the trailer. Just because Colbert does it, doesn't mean that everyone should.
Oh. I didn't know that was a game.
I just had flashbacks to my childhood when people started talking about weird aunt bad touch. That is not more fun than Fallout 3.
Oh, but it IS a game. One that you play with your aunt. :winky:
(In the interest of poor taste, I'm going to continue making reference to Weird Aunt Bad Touch)
But it sounds to me like you played one of the less popular sequels. Weird Uncle Bad Touch and Catholic Priest Bad Touch were generally reviewed quite poorly. But I'm pretty conservative, so I wouldn't recommend either of those to anyone.

Fatherly Blacksmith Bad Touch is still very popular with the looser crowd.
Is there a way to force the game to let you level past 20?
You can change the level cap, (player.maxlevel 40 I think), but I've heard that it can mess up an evil character when you hit 21. To get around that, I've been using player.setlevel 19 to drop myself back down. It lets me keep Grim Reaper's Sprint at level 19, so now I'm picking up perks I missed before.
How do you go about doing that?
And when you do .setlevel 19, when you go back down to 19 do you keep all your perks/stats you had when you leveled up to 20?
Well, first, it's only on PC....so you're screwed if you're on a console. If we're talking PC, though:
Hit the tilde/backtick (~/`) key on your keyboard to bring up the console (at first it will just be a text cursor in the lower left corner, and it will freeze the action). Type player.setlevel 19{ENTER} and it will drop you back to 19, but keeping your stats and perks. The experience bar won't look like it is progressing until you hit a certain amount, but don't worry. Like I said above, it lets me keep GRS when I'm down at 19. Really, it appears that the only things that your level does is keep track of the amount of experience until the next level and restricting what perks you can get.
I found a Deathclaw that was stuck in a loop of flying upwards at ridiculous speeds and respawning on the ground when it hit the maximum height of the game world, immediately flying upwards again for no apparent reason again.
I managed to get it into VATS and shoot a hunting rifle at it. The Deathclaw flew upwards faster in VATS than the bullet did, then VATS ended and I was left extremely confused. Reloading fixed the glitch.
The same thing happened to me at the F. Scott Key Campground. I couldn't see it at first, but Charon kept pointing his gun straight up in the air, and the battle music was coming on. The second or third time, it got stuck in the scenery just long enough for me to notice it, and then it floated up again. The next time it did that, I popped into VATS and ended up killing it when it was almost to the top of the bounding box. I have a screen shot of it falling back to the ground somewhere.

You know what's awesome? The whole slew of FO3 threads.
Oh and you guys. You guys are all awesome.
Seriously, I just started farting around with this game again. I downloaded a pretty fun mod that adds Desert Eagles to the game. They work great, problem is none of the skins seem to work. The gun always appears silvery, or the colors flicker. Oh well, now I feel like a real cowboy.
I'm going to grab a few more mods that add new clothing and weapons, then I might get some gameplay stuff. That boss monster mod looks particularly fun.

My favorite glitch was a Nukalurk appearing point blank, out of thin air, on a catwalk.

Actually, I didn't. The particular mod specifies the text line that needs to be edited, but when I CTRL+F searched the .ini file, I got nothing. I thought perhaps an update or the GECK overwrote the code I needed. I'll go and search for it again, I'm sure that's the problem.

If something is missing from an ini, adding it is the course of action. Usually.

I haven't played in a few weeks, and the other day as I was talking to one of the butchers at my store, "Butcher Pete" got stuck in my head. He loves that meat, you know.
I called in sick yesterday too, so I probably should have played. Stupid books that I got as Christmas presents.
Word is there's only 90 or so bottles of Quantum in the world. Hence, if you had the other two schematics, you could make 90 x 2 = 180 Nuka Grenades.
If you did the Challenge, then you get 90 - 30 = 60 x 3 = 180 Nuka Grenades, or exactly the same number of possible Grenades.
Taking into account that you'll probably never find all the Quantum bottles, you actually get a net loss of Nuka Grenades by handing in the Quantums for the quest.

I believe the math takes that into account. There's only a 10% chance on opening a cola machine that you'll find a Quantum in there.

It's worth noting that the contents don't get written to your save file until you remove something from the container.
So if there's no quantum.. don't take anything. Maybe someday when you come back a quantum will magically appear.
Searching for random bottles in countless contains doesn't seem enjoyable.
You don't. You explore like you normally would, just add vending machines to the list of stuff you open while you're there. And if exploration and opening containers isn't your thing then you're playing the wrong game.

Unlimited nuka grenades is probably something I think most people would consider game breaking. I personally save them for when I see an enclave patrol standing close to a bunch or cars.
I haven't got the nuka schematic yet, but I'm playing on hard and the game is easy enough already. I've even decided not to bother putting power armour on since I'd rather stick with whatever looks coolest cosmetically than go for the best gear. Sneak attacks are just so damn powerful, I one hit kill most enemies.

I personally love the combat (only about ~15 hours in though). I love seeing heads and legs blown to bits.
Maybe I am easy to please though, I had about 1000 groin shots in Fable 2 and I pretty much exclusively went for groin shots in FO1 and 2.
Real men punch deathclaws in the face. None of this hydraulic glove shit, either. Bare fists.
Although, bear fists would be pretty manly, as well. I want a big, fuzzy yao guai gauntlet. No. Two big, fuzzy yao guai gauntlets.
