Doh: Spybot and Malware Bytes won't run/be installed and other problems with viruses

edited December 2008 in Help / Advice Forum
So I run AVG and it says that nothing wrong...great. Thanks AVG. Or what it does find, it isn't able to resolve. I can't get MalwareBytes to run, so I tried reinstalling and no dice. Same goes with Spybot. Adaware works, but unfortunately doesn't solve the problems. Any advice would be awesome. Happy Holidays.

Try renaming the executables. Sounds stupid, but it's worked for me on some strains of Vundo. Not all, bu t some. Also look for running instances of msiexec.exe, some strains use fake installs to prevent new programs from installing.

However, the ones I've run into capable of doing that won't be fixed with those tools anyway. Combofix might work for you, but with combofix there's always a slim chance it'll wreck the computer and force you to reformat.

Also, disable system restore - Vundo has a nasty habit of growing back from the bit you didn't get, and I've only had long-term success against it by first clearing out system restore. Backup anything important. It's possible to beat any strain of Vundo without reformatting, but sometimes that is just the easiest way.

Safe mode will help for some viruses.

Vundo huh? I haven't heard of it, but the symptoms you mentioned sound similar. I have my vista install disc, so what can I do with that. Now, to elaborate, I have a 500 GB hard drive. It's partioned into two parts.
C and E. Windows is on C, and E is about 350 filled with music and other data, but no program files or windows junk. Is it possible to reinstall Windows on C, without fucking up E? Once again, C and E are both on the same physical hard drive.

    Fuck.

    Yeah, AVG isn't that great.

You have a few options here. You can try installing another Anti-virus, something free like Comodo or Clamwin if you want to be different. Adaware or the free trial of Webroot Spyware Sweeper should be able to install to clean this.

Also I would suggest after installing & updating that you unplug your physical internet cable and boot into safe mode to scan.

Trying to get webroot to work but it can't make it through install. Always says fatal error 1603.

Anyone know about those reinstalling windows ideas I thought I might try? I'm not in the habit of trying to reinstall my OS so...I don't really have a good idea of whether those are feasible options. As mentioned I have a 500 Split into C and E. Windows on C, music and pics and docs on E. I also have another hard drive F that is only 80 so I can't move everything that I want to save from E and C to F and want to know if reinstalling on C with fuck up stuff on E. Also I don't have a very big external hard drive so that's not much of an option either...

Just to confirm, did you run spybot and malwarebytes in safe mode?
