Laptop wont load google maps, and other issues

My girlfriends laptop has served her well for almost a year now, but has recently come into an issue while she has been in college.
from what she has told me, I can gather this being the basic issue
Google maps wont load unless placed in basic html, the same for gmail. Galleries on deviant art wont load either.
Start up is slower than it was in the past.
I told her to scan for spyware and viral infection, brought up nothing.
To me it seems like it might just be time to reformat the puppy, possibly downgrade to XP from vista. Though she has no driver CDs or anything.
Any advice as to soft solving this without a reformat would be appreciated
