So, in the fight to gain friends and loyalties in Afghanistan it was known when they first started the CIA etc were recorded carrying large bags of money to the local warlords to buy loyalty. In recent years they've had to change tactics to giving some more... unorthodox things.

I'm not entirely sure what the long-term implications of this strategy are going to be, but my gut says two things: 1, at least we're not giving them guns this time and 2, anything that opens up their sexual mores is ultimately going to make things better.

True story here, I once knew a guy from Iran. Told me a story from a guy who he knew over in Iran, there was a Mullah (big powerful guy) who his friend went to his house as his job was satellite dish installing etc.
Anyway, when he went to this mullahs home he noticed a number of things like a nice large swimming pool, lots of fancy stuff and his wife happened to be happily wearing a swimsuit etc.

Just 'cause there still exist some sexually repressed or close-minded people doesn't mean that things, sexually, aren't a hell of a lot freer than they were not that long ago.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the more backwards regions of the "sexually uptight" Middle East of the opinion that women must be chaste and demure and will be killed if they show off too much ankle and such, while the men are free to bang whatever the hell they want with nigh-impunity, especially when you're talking about those in charge? See also: the Saddam boys.
If the Viagra results in more sexual freedom, hey, awesome. But I'm envisioning brutal warlords who now get to rape their harems well into their 70s. Which, you know, isn't all that awesome.
edit: I mean, better than guns, and better than cash that would go towards buying guns, but... I really don't see any upsides here other than the lack of downsides.
This is plainly evident to anyone who does even cursory research on Iran, sadly most of the American public is under the impression that Iran is... well I asked my brother what he thought Iran was like (since he believes we should BOMB THEM OMG NUKES OMG I LOVE YOU OREILLY) and he described camel jockeys in a desert living in huts, because that's what he saw in Afghanistan. I think most people think the entire middle east is the same, because there's only like 2 middle eastern locales ever portrayed in film - mud hutts and barren desert.

Iran has an internet filter that is fought tooth and nail by its younger people. It is quite possibly the most progressive middle eastern country (excluding Israel), and my personal theory is because the US hasn't been able to meddle with them for 3 decades the way we have with Saudi Arabia and Iraq. I have this crazy notion that if we'd left Iran and Iraq completely alone for the last century they'd both be progressive democracies or representative republics

Not only can they rape them until they are older, they can also do so more frequently and as a result will likely desire to have larger harems. And of course the women in the harems are almost the lucky ones because they are looked after somewhat and aren't going to end up honor killed for failing to protect their chastity. They will probably be handing it out like candy to their underlings, who can't necessarily support a harem of their own.
Some percentage of them are going to stroke out or have their hearts implode. Because they will be abusing the viagra rather than using it a doctor's supervision, the numbers will be somewhat higher than they are in the states. That's good, I guess.
I can't be the only one who found it ironic that Tim Leary had to put NSFW tags on that when using it as evidence of a sexual revolution.
I guess Viagra is less dangerous for our boys abroad than guns and money, but it's no where near perfect from a feminist point of view. If the CIA's goal wasn't to get intel, but to instigate a sexual revolution in the periphery of a developing country they wouldn't be handing out Viagra, but they would be handing out anti-conception pills to women. I don't need to remind you all that the post-war sexual revolution in the Western World** did not happen because of performance enhancing drugs, but because of anti-conception drugs. Making it possible for women to have a lot more control over when to get pregnant.

Actualy no, never read the book, the stories of afghan tastes(indeed arab tastes) go back centuries. Seems its easier to be gay in the muslim world than it is to be straight. Everyone watches you if you are with a girl, to protect her "purity". Two guys can spend all the time they want without anyone comenting.
You can't have more than 4 wives. Harems are a different story and rather outdated and as far as I know not mentioned in the Quran because only wealthy fucks had them.
Plus, you hand out anti-conception pills to a woman and she's found out, you can bet your ass the family is kicking her out. Even in America I have to sneak around to get birth control pills without my family knowing because suspicion of illicit activity is enough to condemn you even without evidence.
