I have lost my HDD three times in the last month to Corrupted Registry Hive. My research suggests this is possibly bad sectors on the disk.
So with a bit of Xmas money I got a new SATA HDD. My old one lasted me two hardware cycles, so it is reasonable that it is at the end of its life.
1. I am wondering if there is a freeware imaging software out there that will allow me to image the drive with all the software, configurations and setting intact?
2. Also can you grab an image from one disc and apply it to a different disc without any problems?
I am not aware of any free option out there as mature as the commercial Norton Ghost. You could try Clonezilla Live, which runs from a CD/DVD or from USB flash drive or USB hard drive.
I have not used it, so I cannot tell if it will work as you expect.
Hear my warnings, unbelievers. We have raised altars in this land so that we may sacrifice you to our gods. There is no hope in opposing the inevitable. Put down your arms, unbelievers, and bow before the forces of Chaos!
You could cheat, there's a process I use at work, which requires a bootable Windows disc and XCopy, with which I do what I call a "poor man's ghost", that it I begin to install XP on a drive, let it create the boot info and such, stop the process, delete the contents of the drive, and then XCopy the contents of old drive to new drive... It's like XCopy C:\*.* \ /e /h /y or something....
