It sounds like some of the people bitching about aspects of the film are going off of the trailers, instead of, you know, watching the movie and having legitimate complaints.

Yes, they spoke English, it's a film primarily for Americans. However, they weren't really speaking English, you are to believe they are speaking German. At the beginning, Cruise is speaking in German, and slowly it starts to become translated to English on the fly. This is a common method used in other movies to show what language is really being spoken throughout, but so you can understand the film and not have subtitles.

Yup! I believe this trick was first used in The Hunt for Red October to good effect, because Sean Connery couldn't speak Russian worth a damn.

Heh I think Metal Gear Solid 3 did this as well when Eva complemented Snake on his Russian.

Anyways good movie. I was really walking into the theater a bit worried with all the bad mojo about the movie I've heard throughout the year.

I remember watching some History Channel thing a few years back that proved that if Stauffenberg had just placed the bag a little closer to Hitler, like on the other side of the table leg, there could have been some serious potential damage done, possibly even death. I like that they showed the placement of the bag in the final moments within the wolf's lair.

All in all, not a bad film to go see.

Actually, Stauffenberg did place the bag on the correct side. After he left, another officer bumped it with his leg, knocked it over, and placed it on the other side of the heavy table leg. The original position would most likely have killed Hitler. Just like if both explosives were in the bag. Or if the meeting was in the reinforced structures without windows.

My boyfriend's only complaint was that the end was a bit depressing, but that was to be expected. I mean. Hilter lived.

    NO SPOILERS!

I have this new theory that any time they interview the actors for the ads of something it sucks, which is what they're doing for this movie now, so I'm nervous. Pros are that it's a Nazi assassination attempt and it's directed by Bryan Singer, and cons are Tom Cruise and what the ads are telling me the movie is.

Second, for the guy who said they took a boring assassination plot and turned it into an action movie: this is not an action movie. It is very much a political thriller. The only "action" was when the bomb goes off. Otherwise, it's a bunch of people talking, and then showing the coup after the bomb.

Cruise wasn't bad at all, and it was definitely a good fit after seeing that comparison picture.

Also, it was quite clear not everyone was in it to do a good thing, people had political and power gains if the plot went through. As for why nobody tried to just shoot him - heavy security for one, and the other more important reason. They explained very clearly that a plot had to be set up to take over Germany from the SS, among other high ranking officials that would be just as bad, if not worse than Hitler himself was. Think of a Hydra. They needed to turn the people on the SS, which is what the Valkyrie plan was being used for.

Yes, because it is totally illegitimate to respond to a thread essentially asking if you saw the film and what your thoughts were with "No, I didn't see it. This is why" and then give people a chance to respond. You know, without criticizing them for daring to do so.

It's as if you're supposed to have discussions or something.

On the language transition, Hunt for Red October utilizes the technique very well and also achieves having its cast members (excluding Connery for obvious reasons) come off as believably Russian. It is possible to use English, even without accents, in a believable manner. If your statement is that the majority of the cast pulled that off, great. Every time I saw or heard Cruise I could have replaced the eye patch and uniform with long hair and a jacket and gotten Vanilla Sky, or replaced them with longer hair and a different uniform and gotten The Last Samurai, OR given him white hair and a suit and gotten Collateral.

Maybe this is off base. But if it is, they did a very poor job of putting together a representative trailer that is supposed to pull people in.

Please tell me Cruise doesn't play Rommel

    Please

No, he plays another guy, the person who actually attempted a coup.

What's worse is that the stepdad from Shaun of the Dead (or the head Vampire from Underworld 1) plays a German general. It's weirder to me seeing a guy with a British accent playing a German guy (only the person playing Hitler has a vaguely German accent, and then, he has few lines). This makes my claim even more obvious--if it was the Empire, accents wouldn't matter. God damnit.
Seriously. The breakdown of the movie's accents is a bad cliche:

Hitler has a German accent, Stauffencruise has an American accent, everyone else has a vaguely British accent. I think it would have been better entirely in German with subtitles, and without distractingly-recognizable actors.

edit: I did like it, though.

But that wouldn't have made them lots of money. American audiences shun subtitled films. They also shun historically accurate, non-actionized war movies. Which this would've been, had they done a proper job instead.

I was going to use "dramatized" but it's already a drama really. Overly-dramatized maybe?

God damnit now I really want to see a movie about an attempt to assassinate Palpatine. Vader could be the brains behind it.

I've been wishing that by some crazy set of circumstances someone with ability to green-light a film would get this adapted :

    http://darthside.blogspot.com/

Basically a blog from Vader's perspective from the end of ANH to the end of Jedi.

I thought Valkyrie was really good, actually. But I've always been a sucker for Singer's films, and the fact that he re-teamed with McQuarrie for this just made it a must-see in my book. Cruise was adequate for the role, and they certainly could have done better choice-wise (although the likeness is pretty close) but the rest of the cast was so ridiculously good you could pretty easily look past him. Bill Nighy, Kenneth Brannagh, Bernard Hill, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, etc. So much talent in one place, my head was close to asploding. :D

I'm glad the actors didn't try to deliver their lines with Colonel Klink accents, personally.

And if someone is bummed out by the ending of Valkyrie, have them watch Downfall next. Granted, that movie can be a bit depressing in places, too, but at the end, Hitler ist tot and der reich ist kaput. Also, you'll recognize a couple cast members.

No you don't cuz it would suck

It could work, just not with Lucas.

And not with Vader as the brains either. Dude's kind of an easily-manipulated idiot.

If you want to see Branagh in a permafrost-on-your spine dramatization of events in ye olde Nazi times, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_(2001_film). Super insight into the mundanity of evil critters.

Well, he does something super awesome, and manly.
After the failed plot and coup, he goes to a remote spot in a forest, pulls the pin on a grenade, and holds it up to his neck. How bad ass is that?

Killing nazi's is so much fun is it any surprise the nazi's decided to get in on it. I mean who hasn't "almost" killed Hitler, Hitlers Brain, Hitlers Brain in a a robot, Hitlers Brain in a Reanimated Body, Hitlers Brain in a Reanimated Body piloting a helicopter... etc.

My gf noticed a new trend in nazi films again with this film and Defiance coming out soon. I told her it's still not PC to kill Islamo-fascist terrorists in Hollywood yet.

Yeah, turns out that Branagh actually
did blow his own head off, so that it would be more realistic. He'll return to this existence in a few days.
