Not much of a fan of sports games but I'll be damned if the team matchup games on Live aren't more fun than poop on a stick.

Anyone else been playing on Live? Hit me up

I'd totally take you up on it ('cause I love the NBA 2K series), but I swore off my annual Madden and NBA 2K tax for this next cycle. Not that I begrudge you your enjoyment of the game, but I'm weary of paying $60 for an incremental upgrade.

NBA 2K9 is not an incremental upgrade. Greatest. Sports. Game. Ever. The Association mode is as deep as it gets and they fixed a bunch of gameplay stuff I didn't like from 2K8.

Single player exists in 2k9???? o_O

Teamup 5 vs 5, with each person playing one player and all using mics is the greatest thing to come to gaming since the internets.

I don't want to start an argument here, but that's what I heard about 2K8.

Yeah I bought 2k9 and really can't tell the difference, but then again I really only have a passing interest in Basketball at the moment.

Any tips to get me, well, good at this game?

Once I finish the rest of the achievements in Fallout 3, I'll be trading it in, and I have my eye on this one. I haven't owned a basketball game since NBA 2K on the Dreamcast.

There is a threshold at the begining of the learning curve that falls away quickly the more you play, especially online.

    Tips for online play:

Stay out of the box! It takes newbs a while to realize there is a 3 second rule on offense, and amazingly enough, on defense!

Pass first, unless you are playing someone like Kobe that can easily get to the basket or create their own shot (same as real basketball?)

Right trigger for driving and dunking is fundemental.

Free throws, I sucked at this until I went into practice mode and shot 100 in a row.

Everything else you can learn from the tutorials and videos on the nba 2k9 website. After you pass that threshold it becomes very easy to average an A+ online.

Watch some NBA games (NBA is fantastic this year) and try to pick up how they play. Learn the pick and roll. Choose the Hornets or Jazz to get used to it as CP3 / David West can run it pretty well as well as Deron Williams / Boozer. Try to pull the defense on drive and kicks and just generally move the ball to get an open shot and take it. And contrary to the previous post, if you do have a good big man then get it to him down low. Me and my buddy play 8 min quarters and we get very realistic stats and scores and it is a ton of fun.

One note. I did play an online game and the douche I was playing full court pressed the whole game. DO NOT DO THIS. Only some college teams do this when they are totally overmatched. It is gay and people that know basketball will be pissed and give you negative feedback. Also do not sprint down the floor on every inbounds pass.
