This just in, most people are flawed in some way shape or form. More at 11.
Yosuke didn't hate Kanji for his ambiguous at best sexuality. He was uncomfortable with it, and as a rural Japanese high school male...
Are we really calling this evidence that Yosuke is a jackass? Or in any way surprising? He was weirded out in any major capacity twice, but unless you missed it, they very much became friends.
Take a second to step off of the high horse of hyper enlightened internet morality for five seconds, in which only the whitest of knights are acceptable human beings.
Yosuke was tired, grouchy, starving, and a high school student. I wasn't really surprised by his actions there... The rest of the time, as someone else mentioned, Yosuke just likes to tease people without thinking it through.
Anyways, I thought it was cute. What can I say?
That said Band was awful. Ayane has the worst character design in the history of anything, on top of being rather shallow in general. She looks like she's 8 years old, and that's being generous. Why is she a romance option at all ugh.
I looked pretty young in highschool myself and was also a band member. It's for those reasons that I probably like Ayane more than most. Heh.
There are people who hated Yosuke? Really? I mean...really?
Yosuke is a MASSIVE douche. We've had this conversation, a few pages back.
Ai is great, especially around 5+. She was great before that, just for being so hilariously bitchy.
Yeaaaah, for females, I really don't like the bitchy type. That's probably why I didn't have any interest in getting her past four once I hit December.
I'm surprised so many people went the music route for Sun in the first place; I picked Yumi and drama as soon as I saw the options. It didn't help that it took me TEN FUCKING MINUTES to even find the band room, though. I finally found the damn door, took one look at the girl with a profile picture, assumed she was a potential romance arc, and bound right back to drama club.
As for Yosuke
I won't comment on the later stuff until I get there. But I don't care how hungry you are, you don't a guy "I'm worried you might sexually molest us in our sleep." Especially when you know that the guy is so worried about his sexual identity that it literally manifested as a demon.
Edit: As for the "rural" part, remember that Yosuke's also a city boy; he just moved in earlier than you did. I might have accepted it as more typical from the locals, but Chie and Yukiko haven't seemed too bothered. Now, the "Japanese" part is interesting, but I have no idea how that really works in Japan at this point. Anyone who lives/visited recently want to comment?

One thing that saddens me is that I'll probably never have the patience to see how every, possible conservation plays out between out-of-party characters in the dungeons. Especially when they change depending upon your S-Link rank with them.
Case in point being with Yosuke, who I maxed before running through a dungeon for material gathering. At one point he's in the same room as Kanji, and when Yosuke is talking about the fight by the river, Kanji says how he had heard about it, and how he would be free to trade punches every now and again. Another time it was Teddie instead of Yosuke, and he was talking about how many times Yosuke was bowing and apologizing after the incident.

I have no idea if it's drastically changed in the last few years, but the Japanese view of it in general tends to be pretty different. From what I've read and been told, it's acceptable as a kid to be infatuated with someone of the same gender and it's almost viewed as practice for a real relationship in the future. You sometimes see this crop up even in shows with child characters and this kind of relationship is viewed as more pure since there isn't the sexual subtext involved. It's viewed as a phase you grow out of. Now if someone doesn't or realizes that buttsex and the yuri equivalents exist, then it starts to have the negative stigma. Some forumers seemed surprised that some npcs did the girlcrush thing in P3 and then read way more into it than Japanese gamers probably did, kind of like yaoi fangirls in the states . . . Not to say there isn't not so innocent portrayals of yaoi and yuri in Japan of course, but that seems to be a series of separate genres entirely.
The stereotypical portrayal of a blatantly homosexual person is different in Japan too. While in the US it's the effeminate flamer, in Japan it's the butch bear type. Part of the reason American made FPS games featuring muscle bound hulks have had trouble making headway in Japan. It would be the equivalent of starring an abtholutely fabulous drama teacher in the west. Kanji has the leather, the build (comparatively to other characters), and the attitude to fit the image to some degree. I imagine that the voice work for his shadow lacked some of the characteristics of the US version since it wouldn't need it portray the same image in Japan. It could actually freak out the city boy more than the rural inhabitants since Yousuke is probably more like to have seen that portrayal in the media.
But I think Yousuke's habit of making fun of anyone around him takes precedent more than any real fear of being anally raped.
Interesting. I actually heard a bit about that view elsewhere (damned if I could tell you where.) I don't know how univesally it's accepted, though. How many famous public figures in Japan are gay? Do they have their Ellens and Neil Patrick Harrises, not to mention all the societal differences in how they came out? At any rate, I still wouldn't be shocked if the answer differed between the cities and rural areas like it does in America, which might explain why the only openly gay/bisexual character is in Persona 3. So I wouldn't be surprised if, say, my interpretation of Chie/Yukiko is anything but speculation, since that's all I treated it as such.
And that second paragraph is great. When I get around to playing Gears of War, I'll never be able to take it seriously. In all sincerity I thank you for that.
As for Yosuke,
I can get he might be kidding around and not just blatantly homophobic, but it's still a rough thing to joke about. I mean, nobody every joked at Yosuke, "So, remember that girl you liked? And how she was horribly murdered and always hated you anyway? How does that taste?" I

I think it was just a hang-up Yousuke had, one of those irrational things.
Sure, he can be a bit of a douche sometimes, but I couldn't help but like the guy. I can't say I didn't like any of the team in this game. Certainly the "cooking" social link was better done than P3's...

It's a weird situation in general. Sex is still DONE BEHIND CLOSED DOORS NOBODY TALK ABOUT IT IT JUST HAPPENS OKAY. But it's not that unusual to see people openly reading relatively explicit stuff on trains, not to mention the porn game characters and marketting all over the place in certain areas.
And I'm sure Hard Gay isn't really doing a ton to bring down the "gays are scary and are coming FOR YOU" mindset either.
Hard Gay is like those Gay Fashion Team or whatever who help straight guys dress up. They're there to be laughed at as stereotypes more than actually promoting the idea that homosexuals are normal people like you and me who just happen to have different sexual attractions.

Which is why Hard Gay and the such are really almost as offensive as people who support Proposition 8.

Fair enough. That explains all the "special moments" you have with your girlfriends, too. I suppose that's for the best, given how remarkably a series about teenagers shooting themselves in the head for power managed to slip under the radar. Toss the tiniest bit of sex in, and people notice, as Mass Effect aptly demonstrated.

This makes me wonder about the trip to Port Island.
Was the thing about "getting drunk off the atmosphere" meant to be a cover for teenage drunkenness, or was that completely intended to be taken at face value? It seems like a weird thing to do in a series like Shin Megami Tensei, but at face value it's pretty retarded.

About Port Island:
There's some Japanese rumor about how a bar can have so much alcohol in the atmosphere that people can get drunk just by being there. Whether Naoto's comment about the bar not serving alcohol anymore was added for the American release or not is anyone's guess.

Yeeeaaaah, that part was weird. But I didn't know about that rumor. That kinda puts things more in perspective. That said...
The game is rated M and all, so I don't think Atlus would put in a random "don't drink kiddies!" message in there. That, and they didn't really hide the few times Kanji is trys to sneak a few drinks.
Whoa... So I just got the death arcana after one fight when trying to level up for a boss (I'm low on sp). I was really happy. Then, after the fight nothing happened... at all. Nothing. No healing sp, no dropped hp, no teleport out of the dungeon. Nothing. wtf?
You know what else is fun? Getting halfway through a dungeon, and low on SP/HP and find out that you're out of Goho-M's
I always make sure someone has Traesto.
I always carry ~20 Goho-M's. I'm paranoid that way.
Man how the hell can you people afford all these items? I barely have enough for healing items!
Rainy day discounts help.
I finished the game flat broke, though, which in retrospect was probably not the most intelligent move. Some of the endgame fusions are just way too expensive given P4's method of getting yen. In P3 you could get like five hundred grand from a random chest drop. Here? Two thousand a battle, if you're very lucky.
I was broke all the time in my first playthough as well, and finished with 20k. Now I'm on Aug. 1 of my second playthrough and have like 450k. I think half the deal is being able to work every night you can and not having to worry about upping abilities.
Ugh, screw these knights at the top of dungeon 6. They aren't even hard, they're just SP eaters. That's so unfair, just like being resistant to your weakness and all-out attacks you stupid knight.
