One thing that I really appreciate about this game is how long it is. It seems like a lot of games lately don't worry too much about developing plot/storylines, because they can always just make a sequel out and say "we were introducing characters!" However, this game has kept me entertained a lot longer than I expected, and I've thought the game was going to end three or four times now and kept going!

It's just refreshing to see someone (sega surprisingly enough) take the time to give you story and gameplay and not cheap out on either.

Your favorite games do not equal mine or everyone else's favorite games. I could easily poke you with the "stop being a fanboy" thing. I'm not being a fanboy, I'm being a very cautious consumer. Uncharted and White Knight Chronicles don't interest me at all. Congrats for them being on your list and all, but they aren't on my list.

That's fine, most people buy systems according to game franchises they do enjoy. But the PS3 has plenty to offer at this point. Might as well jump in.

And it is good of you to consider Valkyria Chronicles, we simply want to push you off the edge off a cliff and hand you a rope that says, "get Valkyria Chronicles and a PS3 or die".

    That's harmless enough isn't it?

    So, impressions from the manga.

It's pretty well written, and so far seems to mostly stick to the plot pretty well. It also hits a lot of stuff that although you never actually saw it, is easily acceptable as behind the scenes stuff that you never actually saw.

The plot parts are populated pretty much entirely by the main characters, though that's to be expected. The other squad 7-ers will appear in the background, maybe have a line or two. It really had me worried, because seeing more of the others was a major selling point for me, and it wasn't really living up to my expectations.

Then I reached the first battle, and it was pretty much 'YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!!!'. Almost the entire battle was made up of short vignettes of normal squad 7-ers, gradually moving towards the conclusion. It made me unbelievably happy.

The art can be a bit off sometimes (wavy's beard in particular seems to have disappeared), and it was definitely made for people who have played the game already (I doubt you'd be able to understand everything if you hadn't), but it's still a fantastic read.

    And it has Ted!

Finally beat it tonight after a week and a half or so of on-and-off playing. VC makes a surprisingly good pick-up-and-play game, since you can always have a peek at a couple cutscenes to catch you up on everything. Absolutely amazing all the way through.

Now all I'd like to see is MORE! VC2 and/or expansion content please, preferably with new stuff to toy around with rather than just new missions (I'd love to see Engineers have a few other options, like setting up mounted guns or mines, and I'd love to see Snipers get a special; maybe camoflauge?).

Just some thoughts on the endgame (ending spoilers and such, obviously):
Order: Defend from accidental click spoiling!
Faldio's suicide was a bit odd. I just kept thinking he should've tossed Maximilian into the engine rather than jumping with him; the guy was toast already! That was probably the only moment in the game (and yes, that includes both Hans and the proposal) that I thought was much too silly. Other than that, I loved the cheesy ending! A very worthy finale to a game of this calibre, even if it did seem a tad on the short side (I wanted some post-war backstory for the non-story characters!).

I think they do get more backstory, when you start new game plus and check the personnel files. But I can't check that now because my roomate stole my copy to go play at a friend's house. In any case, Faldio was positioned so that he couldn't easily turn around, if I remember correctly. Also remember that he felt like he'd betrayed his friend so badly that he was probably suicidal anyway. It didn't bug me too much. The proposal was far cheesier (and mangled), in my opinion.

I had left the shamrock Vyse and Nadine at the sandbags just north of the south position to intercept any soldiers aproaching. Nadine and Vyse in cover and would spend a CP each round to patch up any damage and get back to her firing possition, repairing cover if necisary.

The cheapass way or the legit way?
Cheapass way you can have a lancer run to where the north tank is gonna spawn and a tank sit where the south tank will. Just make sure that Alicia doesn't kill anyone when she's going nuts. That crazy girl.

If you want to do it legit (how I did it, acting without prescience), it's touch. I rushed the base camp with a scout, and deployed a bunch of people there. Killed the two ridge snipers and then had snipers kill dangerous people approaching from the south and made sure my tanks were backed into each other or something to prevent radiator shots. In retrospect, maybe I should have had shocktroopers pointed south instead of snipers so that I had more CP, but it doesn't matter really. I don't actually remember how I advanced south, actually. It might've been Shamrock or something. For going north I had a couple scouts, a shocktrooper and a lancer run through together. Scouts went a little ahead and pulled headshots on anyone standing or grenaded anyone kneeling, shocktrooper ended in front for supression fire and the lancer just hid until I could use 3 CP to kill the north tank, resulting in my victory.

Man that was long. You have my insomnia to thank for the admittedly bad strategy.

The pincer mission. My strategy at one point was to keep an engineer sandwiched between two tanks, like literally. Alas, she was killed by a fucking lancer. Then my camp got captured. How do I do this stupid mission?

This took a couple attempts for me. In the end, my basic strategy was "travel light and do it with the minimum"; if you're not quick the reinforcements begin to overwhelm you.
First, I rushed a scout (Aika, since she has more HP than the usual scout, but you could probably use someone else) up past Alicia into the enemy base, healing along the way. There's only one guy there to flush out and take the base. This brings out the tanks. Then I hid the scout so that those snipers on the hill couldn't kill them. Then I called in a lancer and a trooper at this base (you have to leave your starting deploy not full to do this).

Next, I used Shamrock with a cannon equipped to rush toward the southern tank, attacking all the way. (Shamrock has better movement than Edelweiss, and is positioned closer to start with). You can't kill the tank in the first turn, but you can get behind it for one last good shot and still turn your radiator away from its escort troops.

Finally, I moved my people to the left of the Edelweiss to protect them from those troops.

In following turns, I finished off the southern tank with Shamrock, and then just used the minimum CP to keep my main force safe. (Defensive fire from the tanks is good, plus healing them with an engineer. I sniped a few baddies too, to keep the engineer alive.) Meanwhile, I used most CP on the scout and trooper up north to clear the closest couple guys out on the approach to the second tank. Before too many extra folks showed up, I sneaked my lancer up into the first part of the grass not seen. Then I used a bunch of CP so she could rush to the back of the tank all in one turn. (She took a lot of damage, but with the lance/level I had it only took one shot to the radiator to win, so she didn't have to survive long.)

The pincer mission taught me that unless you know the map, and what's going to happen, you should never deploy all 10 slots. Keeping at least one available, sometimes two, means that you can adapt to conditions, and, worst case, simply deploy another dude halfway across the map.

That chapter also shows you that you really shouldn't use up all of your CP unless you really have a use for them. I finished it in 3 turns once I knew what was going on.

Just fucking forget it, this is one of the worst fucking final boss battles ever.

It's bad enough the accuracy of the Lancer and Tank shells are so terrible that just being a little bit off will miss the target, and it's also bad enough the boss regenerates after every turn, but noooo, now there's a more powerful second form that gets like 10 turns to completely decimate Welkin's tank with no chance at all to retaliate.

    It's goddamn impossible.

    About the final battle :
Shocktroopers are your friends. They can destroy most towers, and you can always blast the third tower with an Edelweiss boosted up with nothing but accuracy equipment.

And I hope you didn't forget that if you place someone of the same class close to another one, they join in with supportive fire?

And if you've leveled your stormtroopers enough so that they have their fourth potential unlocked, you might notice that some stormtroopers are more useful for this level than others...

And about the best character... That's a tough choice...

Jann is definitely the best Lancer (Audrey comes a close second, but Jann is more of a character).
But just think if Jann and Nadine were swapped in their functions... Do you see him shouting "I'll cover the rear!" o_O:winky::lol:

Best stormtrooper? Vyse is really good, Lynn is excellent gameplay-wise (Hard Worker FTW!), but Jane and Wendy are so much fun!

That's the fun thing about this game; you can make a game-wise effective squad, or you can make a squad full of fun characters...
