Jesus christ, second skirmish on hard. I had to finally give in and go to a guide to figure out how to A-rank it. That is some fiddly stuff right there.
I have no idea how anyone could figure that out on their own. Though a couple key components were mostly tank feature I'd never really used (plowing through terrain, smoke rounds)
Took me alot of tries to even compleat that one. But when I did I got the A rank. That one was actualy preaty generous in the number of turns they give you, it's just hard as nails with alot of trial and error. Ended up using alot of smoke and team attacks to get through all of it.
I woulda' sent that friend home with bruised feelings and a pressing need to go online and get his own copy. You're a better man than I.
I learned the hard way: no one touches my game collection any more. As my library grows people seem more and more amazed with my blunt refusal to share, but I got burned so bad (by my flesh and blood brother) that I simply don't trust another human being with my library any more. You're my brother, you're my friend, I love you and you're really important to me, but you put ICO the fuck down. I know I have two copies - and you ain't gettin' either.

So I had my first episode of "What the fucking fuck is this goddamn bullshit?" last night, in Chapter 6:
Oh hi, I'm a unique sniper, Mr. Dusty or some shit. I have the ability to dodge three people firing at me from point-blank fucking range making you have to hit me with three grenades and the intercept-during-their-turn feature to kill me, at which point I'll vanish instantly so you can't loot my body. LOLOL.
Seriously wtf :x

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think you can hit dodging assholes by shooting their feet. (Since dodging always consists of them dropping to the ground.) This obviously works best for shocktroopers since you aren't getting headshots.
Also if you can shoot them from behind since they can't dodge that. (You can have one guy run past him to turn him around, then the second shoot him in the back of the head.)
And snipers shouldn't have intercept or return fire, you sure that guy isn't a scout or something?
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

I'll have to try the "shoot the feet" strategy if I start seeing that shit happen again.
Re: intercept, I meant that after missing this guy with conventional fire, I had to throw grenades to soften him up enough so that on his turn when he moved, my guys unloaded on him and killed him.
Also, I still seem to be at the point where "Drive the Edelweiss into range, park it, put an Engineer behind it, and fuck up everything in short order" seems to be working. I assume at some point they're going to figure out how to flank me and shoot the radiator, but until that point, my usual turn consists of 1 CP on a scout/sniper to spot targets, 6 CP on the tank fucking them up, and 1 CP on the Engineer restocking/repairing any damage done to me.

Made it to the infamous Ch. 7 the other night...only to find out exactly why this chapter has earned its reputation.
The thing kicked my tail, and while I managed to scrape together a victory, I ended up losing two soldiers
after Selvaria had finished mercilessly slaughtering them
. Must be the Fire Emblem fan in me, but I didn't want to move forward without 'em, so I played the chapter again after a good nights sleep and so I could try to apply a few lessons learned. It definitely wasn't as pretty but I got the job done, with no casualties to speak of.
Love the game though, and can't wait to find out what's next! And truth be told, looking back at it there are a lot of mistakes I likely made which made it harder than it needed to be so I don't imagine it'll be nearly as painful should I try for the "A" ranking later on.

This is where I am now. On my first attempt:
The tank ran over my base killing several people.
So I started over immediatly. On my second attempt:
It looked like I was going to make it out no problem until the bitch killed a few of my dudes.
So I killed that game. I imagine my third attempt when I get around to it will be solid as long as I:
Get all my peeps to far edge of the map so I have one more turn to pop the tank.
We shall see, I might even get another shot at it tonight.

If I remember correctly, if you position yourself behind someone they cannot dodge. So if he dodges your first round, make sure to run around him to face him away from whoever's coming up behind him.

I didn't think that level was that bad. I hammered away at all the tank's guns and had 2 scouts picking the guys at the top off. Afterwards I used the scouts to knock down the walls.
When Selvaria came running out, she stomped my Anti-tank guy that was in the way but
I used the Edelweiss as a shield while my other guys took care of the Tank.

Right, that was my basic strategy after seeing how things played out the first couple rounds. Really, Ch. 7 just kind of creates a sense of urgency/panic that really isn't there if you just use the Edelweiss, scouts and each round effectively. That said, I didn't pull off an "A" ranking by any means so there's definitely still room for improvement.

Hey, so I finally got this game, and though I'm only just about done chapter 2 I pretty much love it so far. The combat is awesome. Story ain't bad so far either, though I'm still getting used to the anime style of the characters lol. Can't wait to play more tonight!

Where do I get a nice shiny VC sig, as I've also just picked this lovely piece of SRPG awesome up.
I'm up to chapter 10 right now. The 7th chapter stomped my ass the first 3-4 times I ran it.
But I was able to pull an A rank by the skin of my teeth (last CP in turn 9 went to Largo as he Veggied and Tank Slayered up and finally took that big bitch out) when I finally beat it.
The Forest Snare also gave me f'ing fits, mainly cause Alicia and Welken kept getting drilled by the snipers on the southern ridge as I was cleaning out the northern base. Not to mention how fucking annoying the artillery strikes were.

You mean permanent loss, or just shot to no HP? Because you can call in a medic to save them if they just get their HP reduced to zero.
Also, am I the only person who didn't have much trouble on Ch. 7? I must have gotten pretty lucky...

Unfortunately, they were permanent losses. I couldn't reach them in the round limit with the medic, and giving up their last words they passed on. I considered going forward anyway, but thought the better of it and retried the chapter the next morning -- with much better results.

Well, I won't have the time to craft my own for awhile, so I borrowed a sig from the OP.
Playing last night I've progressed to Episode 12:
The last scene in Episode 11 made me weep like a little bitch. I now feel a great need to destroy some Imp ass for Isara (even though that isn't the Darcsen way).

Just got this in Gamefly yesterday.
So good.
Beautiful graphics and art style, and I love the gameplay. It's so...fresh. I haven't been this taken in by a game like this since Fire Emblem.
So... Uh... Is it just me getting better, or do the Hard difficulty skirmishes actually get easier as they go on? 2nd one is incredibly hard, but I got the 4th and 5th ones A-ranked on my first try (well, 2nd try on the 5th skirmish, but only because of a hidden lancer).

Thanks, and my apologies for the chapter spoiler folks, I had hidden it in the previous posts, but that one accidentally slipped. Honest mistake and edited.
Thinking about ch.7 and 14 again, one reason I like them is because they force you to deal with sudden changes that can test how good you are to dealing with sudden changes. In both of those chapters, I adapted pretty well, even though bad things happened.
In 7
I had to go through the chapter again just because of bad luck, with the Batomys nailing Welkin in the engine.
In 14
I had my only perma-death, Wavy, when the reinforcements showed up and took out half of my army. Killing those tanks felt oh so good.
I liked the fact that those chapters made you have to react to a battle, sometimes in ways you didn't expect. I would love for more chapters like that, just because it adds new challenges. Not only if you are good at making a strategy when starting a mission, but adapting it on the fly to sudden, and sometimes really frustrating, changes.
Hadn't played this for a while. I now realise I suck at strategic games, although I love me some fire emblem and advance wars. Probably because of their simplicity compared to VC.
I think I'm stuck on 4-4a, battle for the bridge. I made some stupid decisions and lost, hard. Now I don't feel like trying again. I'm usually not this quickly demotivated, but somehow I'm afraid it'll get a lot worse (as I see a lot of people talking about eps. 7 and 14) with this game and it'll just end up frustrating me a lot.
I think I just don't get it, when it comes to VC. Also, I hate the progression of the main story. You never seem to know if it's going to be a cutscene or a battle, or am I missing something?
It makes me sad, that I can't appreciate a game like this. Maybe I need to start over or something.
