The downside is once you realize how you only get ammo for weapons you have equipped its pointless to carry anything more then 1 or 2 guns as you will get too little ammo to be helpful.
The Pulse Rifle is great but only with significant node investment. The contact beam is holyshit from the get-go.
The contact beam is kind of like a rocket launcher. Its slow to fire and doesn't carry to much ammo but its accurate and extremely powerful. I would also suggest getting the force gun since its the closest thing in the game to a shotgun (very short range but will do big damage and its great for getting necromorphs out of your face)
I think someone else made the same claim in this thread, but watching these LP's is having a contagious effect. I've been playing Resistance 2 the past couple days and I pick up a Mr. Shotty (I even call it Mr. Shotty) everytime I find one, and whenever I see "Checkpoint Reached", I can't help but go "Checkpoint!" like you did in...was it The Suffering LP? I'm pretty positive it was.
It's good fun, though. I'll be picking up Dead Space for myself soon enough (And be the only one among you guys to get the PS3 version, so lonely) and I can't wait to go through it.
On hard, for my first playthrough, even.
The PS3 and 360 versions are identicle. There's only a slight (very slight) bit more clarity in the 360 version, though I think that has more to do with how the systems output their hdmi signals. I do like the Obisidian suit color scheme a bit more, but I don't know if I'd download it now that it isn't free.
Yeah, I figured the different versions weren't that different, which is good, and I even got the Dismemberment Demo last night. Yeah, this game is so bought'd. I was worried about the Over-the-shoulder layout, since I hated that set up for RE4, but it's not as bad for me in Dead Space. (At least, the demo wasn't) And the fun thing is that it supplies you with the weapons to test out!
So, I'd have to put in my vote for the Ripper, really. The Contact Beam seems crazy powerful, but the Ripper is like a Chainsaw. With range. That you can fire the blade from.
I Downloaded the Obsidian Suit way back when it was free, because I was like "I'm about 90% sure I'm getting this game at some point", so I'm set on that. I might hold off on using it, though, given that it's fully upgraded, isn't it? Kinda take some of the point out of a hard run.
I just had the most hilarious thing happen to me. Chapter 5 spoilers.
The regenerator was chasing me through the medical wing and I was low on ammo. There were some boxes in my way so I picked them up with kinesis and turned to fire it away - and it hit the regenerator. He goes down like a lead weight. This eight foot tall monstrosity, brought low by a small box. The animation is hilarious! Try it some time.
Also the ripper is terribad. I am convinced that if you like the ripper you have not played on Impossible, or possibly Hard.

The Ripper is by far the most awesome to use weapon in the game
But my personal favorite is the Line Gun
However, Helloween, get a goddamn Ripper
The Contact Beam is too powerful; it removes any fun that the bosses have since it trivializes their battles
Yeah the contact beam is great for bosses, but once you throw a few nodes at it boss battles become a bit of a cake walk. Minces the shit out of regular necromorphs though, and that's always a joy to see
Cast me in the Ripper camp, that weapon is the best when versing the ones that crawl on the wall and
the fast ones from the military ship
. Used right, its like an offensive barrier.
Just finished it today, time for another play through

I believe it's basically a level 5 suit. You'll still have to put nodes into it to upgrade it's defense and air, but you'll get the full compliment of slots to start with. Bear in mind, once you use it, you can't change out of it until another playthrough.
Hi guys. I was like totally going to film right, but then like, I got ill...like.
Yeah so Im sitting here with man flu or something with no voice which would make me commentary rubbish. So sorry about that. But hey, at least its not my computer this time!

The Obsidian suit (or Elite) has full slots, but it only has a 10% armor rating. That's the same armor as a regular level 3 suit. A regular level 5 suit has 20%, level 6 Military suit is 30%. So it will make the early game easier due to more carrying space, but the end game will be more difficult due to lower armor.

Totally not experimenting with the different guns, then?

Hrm. So easy to start, but harder in the long run. I'll have to think on that, then, seeing as I found it at Meijer's today for $35 new, so I couldn't resist.
Also, get well soon, Helloween. We'll be waiting with anticipation!

Just play the "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" song they sing at the beginning of the game on an endless loop.
...Now that I think about it that would probably be the freakiest fucking way to play the game. Especially with the interrupts they play during the song when it cuts to demo. This one, in case I wasn't clear
Holy shit that song is fucking scary
When life hands you lemons, you should make lemonade. A Let's Play from the monsters perspective with flu-y gurgling monster noises is just what the doctor ordered.

I had no idea that was actually the intro movie to the game until I finished it and left it on the main screen (with my heart still thumping and me still saying "Oh man WHOAAAAAA WHOAAAAAAAAAAA" after that ending and credits).
One of the best intros I think I've ever seen. Looks sooooo brutal.

Really? I don't find nursery rhymes scary in the least. The intro is pretty stylish though, good combination of sounds and visuals.
I've been watching the FEAR LP whilst waiting for this one to update. At least, I was. I got up to the part where you started shotgunning everyone into a fine paste, and had to go buy the game myself. Got the 360 version, since the PS3 version is apparently cack, and my PC just about meets the minimum requirements for the latest Football Manager game.
Not a problem. I'm back now so I'll be uploading for the next few hours and I'll have it posted as soon as its done.
Getting better then?(if not, speedy recovery to yah)
I've been ill since Monday myself, but I've pretty much just powered through it by the power of spite and flipping the illness off. It seems to have given up first, VICTOLY!
Waiting for the next installment with glee.
