I live in Ohio and we so very rarely get good bands to play around here that when someone I actually want to see comes through I tend to miss it because I haven't been keeping on top of things.
I'm curious if anyone knows of any good websites or even applications that keep a pretty thorough compilation of venues in the area so I could browse that every now and then for concerts I'd like to attend. I've seen a few things like that online but they only had listings for real large venues and since I listen to a lot of obscure bands that tend to play at smaller bars and clubs, it didn't really do me a lot of good.
Or, failing any of that, how do you manage to keep on top of some of the more underground entertainment in your area (stuff that might not be well known enough to make it to something like that local paper, for example)?
I also read The Chicago Readers music section and subscribe to a few iCal calendars that Chicago venues have available. Check your local venue and newspaper websites to see if they have something like this, or even just a mailing list.
edit: oh, I read a few music publications and blogs too, so when they report on a band announcing tour dates, I usually put them in my calendar
and checking band websites/myspaces is always worthwhile. you can't do it for everyone, but I've caught a few show announcements I couldn't find previously just because I take a look while listening to someone who I'd think would be good live
Lots of good bands come through columbus. Its in the local papers there. Though most smaller bands have myspace pages and so on with tour dates as another option.
