A good, cheap laptop?

My dad is looking around for an inexpensive laptop to replace our current desktop. It's a Sony Vaio, which, for light gaming and internet browsing has lasted us around five years, with a RAM and a video card upgrade a while ago.

I'm not too computer savvy and I'm looking around newegg and other sites and just acquainting myself with what exactly is the standard these days. We're looking for something that has a nice big hard drive, a decent processor, plenty of RAM, vista, and the ability to play RTS games and flight sims without difficulty. Anyone got any ideas?

This looked good to me. I bought a lappie from them about 3 years ago and it is still functioning wonderfully.

I'm going to give my usual plug to refurbished laptops from tiger direct's website. They sell straight from the manufacturer, and I LOVE my gateway.

    Yay I love my gateway to, i got a m-6750 for just under 600cdn that has a t5450, 3gbs of ram (DDR2 at 667mhz) and a 250gb harddrive. 15.4 screen

The only thing I was was that the onboard video wasn't onboard video lol, but I mean for school and internet it works awesome. I play ut99 a lot on it to so its good.

Im thinking of upgrading the CPU, apperntly its pretty easy with this model.

but yeah uhh Tigerdirect often has good deals on laptops.

However I have seen an MSI laptop that is supposed to be fitted with a 9600m an costs like 700 or something around there. I believe the link was posted in these forums somewhere

I'll have to take a look at the refurbed ones, the problem is my dad probably wouldn't trust it.

About the Toshiba, looks good, similar to something my dad found from Costco.

Refurbed corporate laptops are the best. Dell Latitudes, Thinkpads, Toshiba Tecras, etc.

They're built to be sturdier than consumer laptops, and most of them have a relatively easy life. Plus you can find accessories (particularly batteries) for them anywhere and cheap. If you can find manufacturer refurbs they usually come with the same warranty that you'd get on a new laptop.

Occasionally, you can find sweet deals on Dell laptops at the Dell outlet store:

While they are refurbished, they are refurbished by Dell and come with the standard Dell warranty, making them a safer bet.
