There are a few games that could be classed as truly unique iPhone 'killer apps', but on the other hand there are loads of games that are not exactly exclusive to the iPhone, but are so cheap (or free) that they become killer by virtue of economy.
Columns/Pop have awful motion control that is needless for a puzzle game. I can't even switch it off. If EA can get Tetris to have solid controls, why can't Sega?
I know its pink themed but Annie's Wild Shot by Tecmo is actually a really good tap shooter for 99 cents. Unlike some of them on the app store this has a couple of neat features including being able to look left/right/up/down and chain together shots for combo points. Its a little short but well worth the 99 cents IMO.
Wild West Pinball it seems is now FREE I think to promote their upcoming pinball game The Deep. WWP even though its only one table I think has the best pinball feel of the app store pinball games.
I could go on but there is quality fun to be had on the app store if you can get over the whole "casual" stigma. my iPod touch not only for casual games but its a great internet tablet too. I mostly use mine daily to read RSS feeds via google reader.

I have a few days access to an iTouch. I will likely never have access again (zero intent to ever buy one.) What is there that I absolutely MUST play?
You're confusing the app store with a console. It's a lot of fun games but nothing amazing. You buy an iPod or iPhone for...you know, an mp3 player or phone. The apps are delicious icing gravy.
I'm not interested in discussing the merits of the device. My little brother got one, I have a few days worth of access to it, and as this is the iTouch game thread, I'm asking if there are any "killer app" type games that I MUST play while I have access.
Has anyone played Tap Tap Revenge 2? My gf has the ipod touch and I'm addicted to that game. Yes, it helps that I love rhythm games in general, but it's actually a pretty good Guitar Hero rip off. There's a good enough mixture of free tracks being added, so that' s nice too.

I played it. Its alright, it introduces chords which is pretty damn awkward and weren't in the first. But the songs are alright and its free so its worth picking up.

If the answer is "no", that's fine.
Awesome, unique, great use of the platform:
Blimp - The Flying Adventure - Awesome art and sound. Just watch the trailer. Unspoilered on purpose! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VRYMRfVrIQ
Flight Control - Simple, challenging, fun, good use of the touch screen.
Topple 1/2 - It's a stacking game with physics. You use your fingers to rotate the blocks on the screen while trying to balance the hardware. lolIGN says
Even though Zen Bound is a casual game, it is nonetheless thrilling. Boundaries aren't being pushed here; they're getting shattered. This is where the iPhone truly soars -- exquisite concepts that are as much about experience and feeling as they are about pressing button A to make action B occur.

Just out of curiosity, if I were to but an iPod touch today, would it come with the 3.0 OS update, or would I actually have to pay for an OS that is already out?

That's pretty horrible. I wonder if I could bitch to get a code for it or something. Did your brother try contacting them about it?
Last July I bought mine and they released the second generation touch just a couple months later. Besides features like an actual speaker, it also debuted the 16GB at the same price as what I paid for my 8GB.
Since the 3G S is a notable step up in performance, I have no doubt we'll see a third generation of Touch that will have similar power sometime in the winter.

In the winter, though? That is a long ways off, and of course you have to expect something better to come along in a half year or so when you buy technology like this.
I wouldn't be happy about paying for an OS that's already out, though. That's unheard of.

Winter is being generous. According to Wikipedia, both generations of Touch were released in early September. I'd say they are going to do the same with the Touch as the iPhone and release a new one each year. So yeah, you will eventually see your hardware obsoleted, but it still better to buy the thing early in its life rather than two months before the release of its successor. It also could be a savvy purchase as they might have the 32GB at the same price as the 16GB.
Had I done the research, I would have waited until the fall.
EDIT: They aren't repackaging the Touches with the new OS...not sure why people are thinking Apple would. The next generation of Touch will definitely come with 3.0, which is another reason to wait.
I've not heard any rumours of a new Touch (and I have like six Apple feeds in my RSS), which is interesting considering the crazy amount of iPhone rumours before WWDC, but Apple could just be keeping it quiet. They are giving away free Touches as part of the back to school promo again this year, which last year was a good way of clearing out old stock before they released the new hardware, so it is definitely possible. I'd recommend waiting till september at least.

Turn off accelerometer control in the settings. It will switch to touch control in which you drag left and right to move the column. It's not perfect, but it works a lot better than the accelerometer.

It was probably existing stock they shipped to him, but I reckon they will update his firmware for free, considering he took receipt of the iPod Touch after the new firmware was released (I'm sure I heard that they were doing free upgrades for people who picked up an iPod Touch from a few weeks before the 3.0 update was released).
It's worth asking anyway, and the 3.0 upgrade is very worth having.

As for games, my personal preference for handhelds is turn based strategy games, so my recommendations are slightly biased towards that. The genre is under represented at the moment, however some games I have played and enjoyed:
Galcon (rapid-action RTS-lite)
Air Combat (interesting Australian MOD recruitment tool, Turn Based air combat strategy thing)
UniWar (Classic Rock Paper Scissors TBS, simple but well implemented)
Flight Control (Fairly unique touch-controlled time-management sim thing)
Toy Bot Diaries (an early platformer game with an interesting use of tilt and touch controls).
Aurora Feint (A dropping blocks puzzle game in essence, it has a couple of interesting twists including RPG elements and a fairly unique mechanic where rotating the iPod causes the block to fall to that side of the screen once they have come to rest plus some challenge modes where you have to solve a specific puzzle with a limited number of 'moves')
I Love Katamari (it's katamari, in your pocket, holy shit. I've never played katamari before so I don't know how it compares, but I love this.)
Reign of Swords (TBS with a spot of RPG. Some really enjoyable maps and battles and an all round pretty meaty game without a 'go' taking up too much time)
Strongholds (An interesting oddity. TBS one-on-one card game thing. I like it and keep coming back to it periodically)
Real Racing (Not the best racing sim ever but certainly no where near the worst either and holy shit how the fuck did they cram this onto the iPhone? Also uploads your best time trials to youtube).
Let's Golf (Great casual golfing sim)
iBomber (carpet bomb the fuck out of everything. pew pew pew. Fun arcade game)
Galaxy on Fire (I haven't really got into this yet, but it's an RPG space shooter sim. there's a demo version available)
Orions: Legend Of Wizards (Ported to the iPhone from the Pocket PC platform, MtG like card strategy game with a campaign mode where you go around capturing floating sky islands)
iShoot (faithful interpretation of Scorched Earth with game customisation options including the ability to create your own weapons)
I woke up this morning with a strange urge to buy The Sims 3 and hoped that unfavourable online reviews would be sufficient intervention. Unfortunately, the reviews all seem to be quite complimentary.

You think people get addicted to coke because of the way it smells?
It all starts out as a bit of fun and then before you know it you lost all your money spending $5000 a week on apps, your wife leaves you for someone who is willing to spend some time with her instead of their pokemons, you get fired from your job for spending 4 hours a day on the toilet and your boss does NOT want to know what you were doing in there, just clear your desk by the end of the day and then you're on the street offering kids blowjobs in exchange for two minutes of Tetris.

My father has apparently gotten on the blower to yell at them, and they're refusing to update the OS for free. Having an accounting background myself, and knowing just how full of shit they are blaming SarbOx for their charging for updates, I'm going to stop discussing that now, before going off on a rant.
How IS the Katamari game on there, though? I own all four of the other Katamari releases in the states, and I have Katamari Forever (the PS3 version) already pre-ordered. I never really minded the different controlls of the PSP version, but the Lite version of ILK didn't give me enough time to get a good feel for the controls. Also, I am curious just how much depth there is to the retail version, and whether it is new levels, or just repeats of old ones. If it is really just another games (such as WHK) repackaged with new controlls, then I'll probably skip it, since I won't be owning the device long-term, but if it is really new content, then that might be good enough for me to purchase the game.
Speaking of which, can an iTouch support multiple accounts in the apps store, or is it tied to only a single one? That is to say, if I decide that I want to buy an app, can I buy it under my own name (just incase I buy a used first gen machine for cheap, a few years down the road, and want to re-download the app(s) I might have purchased to that device) or once the device has been tied to my brother's account, is that the only account allowed on there?
You can authorise up to four devices (devices including computers, iPods and iPhones) per iTunes account. I believe, however, that once you've downloaded an app onto a device that you can deauthorise that device but the app will still exist and be functional (this is why they changed the store so you can only download an app once directly to the device and then have to go through iTunes if you need to download it again, because people were 'sharing' apps with all their friends by authorising a device, downloading all their apps, deauthorising the device, authorise someone else's device, download all the apps, deauthorise, lather, rinse, repeat). So you could use your account to buy a bunch of games on your brothers iPod and then deauthorise it once your done and he can keep the games but they'll still be available for you in the future via iTunes.
I don't know if ILK is the same or new content from the others, as I haven't played the others. I've only done three levels so far, but I like it for what it is (but as I say, I can't compare it to any of the other Katamari games).
And that sucks about 3.0 I wonder if going into one off those Apple Nerd stores would make any difference.
Zen Bound looks so badass. It is a mobile version of Zen Bondage (glad they changed the second word, it sounds creepy to plug that game). You wrap stuff in rope. It is very fun, interesting, and stimulating. Your mind works in new ways and seeing how to rope wraps as you rotate is so neat. A very fun game.
Still, I Dig It ha smost of my play time. I fucking love that shit!
Katamari Damacy on the iPhone is very good. You move slower that you do in the other versions I played, but still pretty well. Turning is a bit odd at first, but after two levels, I was doing pretty well. The clock moves slower than it should, but still gives enough time to finish. Weird.
It had problems for a while due to slowdowns, but it works very well now. It only slows down when you have weird ass collissions.
One complaint, when you get a call, the game will close and you will lose all progress on a level. That fucking blows when you have seconds left and nearly have the size or item you need.
Anyone who likes horizontal shmups might want to take a look at [vidurl=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTIdcyEDkK8]Abigale[/vidurl] — it's 99 cents now, down from $1.99, and it's interesting. The artwork and story are pretty generic anime pap, but it's a pretty challenging shmup that has kind of a cool hook. It's accelorometer-controlled, so tilt to move your character around, and you have a mace attached to you that has gravity, so you drag it behind you and you can swing it manually by tilting in circles. The mace absorbs enemy bullets, which you can then release as a special attack that send the mace flying out in a straight line.
Shit is hard too, though part of it is how generally tough I find tilt-controlled games to feel comfortable with. There's three difficulty levels, and I played on Normal but kept on dying in the middle of the second world. I think there are three worlds, each with five levels.
I tried playing the lite version of Katamari on my Touch... frame rate was not so great. I actually considered it unplayable. Apparantly the 3GS makes the game much more bearable.
If anyone is a fan of Picross, check out "PixelCross". It's .99 and completely awesome. Puzzle graphics arn't as cool as Mario Picross (bias) but the controls are much smoother than the stylus if you can believe it.
"Little Runner" has been moderately fun. Features some simple but beautiful hand drawn pencil art. Very very simple gameplay. You move columns to match the height your CPU runner so he doesn't hit the wall or fall. Only other obstacles are boulders (tap boulders to break) or fire (rub fire to blow them out). If you are a fan of simple flash style games where the only objective is to beat your own score, I'd recommend taking a look.

Goddamn, I felt myself reaching for my pocket before I could finish the second sentence. :x I love Picross on DS, and puzzlers are perfect for quick bites of gameplay. I was wondering how long it would take for a Picross to make it to DSiWare, but this will suffice quite nicely instead.

I think that might have been more to do with being an older version. Someone earlier in the thread was saying the frame rate was a bit choppy on their 3Gs but then an update came out which improved it. I'm playing it on a 3G and not experiencing any problems.
I made a game for the iPhone, it's a cross between Chess and Tetris. Check it out (link in my .sig) if that sounds interesting to you.
The iPhone has been great for puzzle games. Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):
DropOut
Claustrophobia
Trism
CritterCrunch
BombBlocks
Drop7
Gem Spinner
Numba
Enso-Dot
Azkend
PRISM
Elis
Circuits
TwistLink
Some other great games to check out, if you haven't already: Isotope (shooter with RPG elements), Peggle, Harbor Master, Sentinel, Sequoia Touch, and Pebbles.

Some other great games to check out, if you haven't already: Isotope (shooter with RPG elements), Peggle, Harbor Master, Sentinel, Sequoia Touch, and Pebbles.
