I heard John Davison mention Drop7 on Listen Up this weekend, and it made me happy because I've totally been in love with the game for the past week. Everyone who likes puzzlers should definitely check out the Lite version. It's such a refreshing change of pace because it looks like a standard match-3 puzzle game, but it's totally different. It'll mess with your head for the first few plays, but once you wrap your head around the concept and how to start chipping away at the shaded blocks, the floor drops out and it becomes a lot deeper.

I'm enjoying PixelCross so far, but I wish I didn't have to run through the easy 5x5 grids before unlocking the larger boards.

EDIT: Man, and I just bought Eliss for 99 cents after trying the Lite version. It feels a lot like Orbital/Orbient on GBA/WiiWare in terms of aesthetic and presentation, and it's got such a slick interface. Buying all of these 99 cent games makes me feel like I'm at a Sam's Club, gorging on all of the free handouts instead of paying for a full meal. :)

It's gotten so bad with impulse 99 cent purchases... last night I saw a post for a 99 puzzle game (iso or something like that) and I click to buy. The appstore informs me that "YOU'VE ALREADY DOWNLOADED THIS GAME ALREADY YOU JUNKIE" :(

The decision process for my day usually goes: buy soda from vending machine or buy game from app store?

Huh. Whenever I try to download something off of iTunes (from my computer), it gives me an error and says I need to update my billing information, but when I get to the billing information screen it tells me to correct the "indicated items."

No items are highlighted. And I'm just trying to get free stuff to boot.

Edit: Well, I re-entered everything and instead got a "network connection timed out." Everything's fine on my end, so it must be their problem. Weird how the store is perfectly browse-able, but I can't buy anything.

Edit2: Got it! Apparently, "none" isn't actually an option for "credit card" come time to authorize 0 cent payments, even though it's part of the drag down box there. Goddamn.

Archon is pretty good. Seems like a pretty faithful rendition.

Control works with a virtual d-pad for movement and tapping the screen to attack. It takes a little getting used to, but works better than I would have thought it would.

    hey yawl,

I made a game for the iPhone, it's a cross between Chess and Tetris. Check it out (link in my .sig) if that sounds interesting to you.

The iPhone has been great for puzzle games. Here are some of my favorites (in no particular order):
    • DropOut
    • Claustrophobia
    • Trism
    • CritterCrunch
    • BombBlocks
    • Drop7
    • Gem Spinner
    • Numba
    • Enso-Dot
    • Azkend
    • PRISM
    • Elis
    • Circuits
    • TwistLink

Some other great games to check out, if you haven't already: Isotope (shooter with RPG elements), Peggle, Harbor Master, Sentinel, Sequoia Touch, and Pebbles.

This post gives me no idea what any of these games are!

Yeah, I've had problems all day but finally managed to download the full version of Eliss (on sale for a buck!). I just hope I didn't accidentally buy it five times on my iPhone.

Okay, I might be late to the party here, but Eliss is totally rad. It's on sale for a buck now, usually 3 or 4 IIRC, and it's a great action/puzzle kind of game. It uses multitouch really well, and I find myself twisting and turning my hands in crazy ways to play. Everyone should definitely try the Lite version, and the difficulty ramps up quickly by the fifth or sixth level.

I just tried the lie version of assassians creed and it sorta blew me away. Everything felt very natural I just know if I can down five dollars for a ten hour game when the console version was sixty bucks for ten ho...

Yep, totally going to get it.

Also, toucharcade posted news of gamelofts new game Gangsta land which is being toted as the iPhones first 3d open world sandbox game(payback does not count becuase it was awful and not made by gameloft). The screenshots looks good.

    I saw that as well.

I'm very curious how it will turn out.

Their non-licensed games tend to be good but very generic. It works fine for sports games but I wonder if they can bring the character and depth necessary for a gta clone. Very few developers have ever done better than GTA, even on home consoles and PC, so they're setting themselves up for a hell of a challenge by aiming for a 3D gta clone on the iPhone.

I saw an ad for it in a comic book (wow, I'm an adult!) and it looked really great, graphics wise. I was then shocked to see that it had 4 stars. There were a ton of complaints about controls, but every review posted after V1.1 was released said the controls were massively improved.

Saw this over on Tom's this AM... am I late to this party?

MachineWorks Northwest is bringing the classic PC FPS game to Apple's App Store sometime "very soon."

IGN Wireless is reporting that MachineWorks Northwest, the developer that brought Prey Invasion last month (via Hands-On Mobile) to the iPhone and iPod Touch, has ported the infamous 1996 PC Duke Nukem 3D in its entirety, and plans to upload the game to Apple's App Store "very soon."
GN received a hands-on taste of the upcoming game, saying that MachineWorks has not altered the gameplay whatsoever, and has "subtly" upgraded the visuals and even smoothed out the sprites when appearing up-close. IGN also states that Duke's one-liners are still intact, and if the Duke Nukem Soundboard app is any indication (it has curse words!), Apple's keen-yet-moody approval scientists may actually leave them alone... or not.

According to IGN, the game will use the same control scheme used in Prey Invasion, offering tap-to-shoot and on-screen control bars to move and look; a virtual fire button is available when gamers use the "classic control" layout. A screenshot provided by the website also depicts Duke's "Mighty Foot," his basic melee attack, and the item, jump and pause buttons. Additionally, gamers can adjust the transparency of the controls to dim the movement and look bars, clearing up what would otherwise be a cluttered HUD. Granted the iPhone doesn't provide the pixel-precision enjoyed with the mouse and keyboard setup in the PC version, at least players have the freedom to move around, unlike id Software's recently released Doom Resurrection which relies strictly on the scripted "rail" schematic.

It will be interesting to see how Apple handles Duke Nukem 3D. While Duke's one-liners may be somewhat notorious, the original game also featured strippers ("Shake it, baby"), prostitutes, and naked women bound in alien cocoons.

I really liked the Assassins Creed demo. Might buy the full version. Is it similar to the DS version? If so, I might grab that instead.

I really like the virtual analog stick. I really don't like tilting in place of a d-pad or joystick that so many games use. I just can't get the hang of it, and end up oversteering everytime.

Duke 3D is being ported by the same studio that developed Prey Invasion for the iPhone. If you didn't have the dubious pleasure of playing Prey Invasion, it was absolutely godawful, not least because of the control scheme which they appear to be reusing for the Duke port. Hopefully the awesomeness of Duke 3D will outweigh what flaws end up in the final game.

    Flight Of the Amazon Queen.

Although it's freeware which can be run on a PC through ScummVM, so you'd have to decide if you're ok with paying to play it on the iPhone. But, I mean, it's definitely a good game, worth playing.

I think 1112 was pretty well received as well. It's by the guys that are doing Rogue Planet and is serialised. They aren't doing the second part until they've launched Rogue Planet, although that should (better) be hitting the store soon. They get a lot of bitching from people wanting ep02 of 1112, so I guess people liked it enough to want more.

Hopefully there will be some sort of backlash upon release and they will just steal the control scheme from wolf3d which works perfectly. I say this because duke has vertical autoaim, it just happens to let you look around on a vertical axis. If I am mistaken, they could probably fix it, but judging by their past releases (Prey and Real Hunting 3d) I don't have high hopes.

I am buying the fuck out of this though.

Also, I saw an old youtube of that prey game where they had basically dual analog controls in the bottom corners and you tapped anywhere on the screen to shoot. What happened to that? Why did they go to the pill controls? WHAT THE FUCK

Where do you buy discounted iTunes cards? I know costco has $60 cards for $50. I've read that buying gift cards off of ebay is fairly risky. Many cards on ebay are fraudelent and Apple can cancel the card/remaining balance.

Yeah, but they don't work particularly well either. Your turning and movement speed is painfully slow, and if you move your thumbs out of the too-small circles you stop moving completely and have to reposition your thumbs. It's a huge pain in the dick and not worth your time.

i had this sort of buyer remorse with Galcon.

I've decided to only buy games on impulse when they .99. If they are higher than that, then they need to be really good. So far, the only game to meet that requirement has been Eliss. I would like isotope, uniwar, and zenonia, but i think i can wait for a sale, just like i did with geodefense.
