For some odd and stupid reason, we canandian, can use gift cards on apps. Only on music and videos... go figure....
Due to tax laws and commerce restrictions for software in Canada, customers residing in Canada may only purchase games and applications using a credit card.
Sucks. I bought a $50 iTunes card once thinking I could buy apps with it. I felt like quite a sucker.
I think it was recommended earlier in the thread but I really have to second Crush the Castle if you don't have it. It's a fun physics-based game where you destroy castle-like structures with a trebuchet, and try to do it with as few shots as possible. I've played through the whole game already and I still go back and spend time on earlier levels, destroying them with the new weapons. It's only $0.99 too.
yeah, crush the castle is excellent. Worth bearing in mind that you can play it for free on the PC as it's a port of a Flash game, but in my opinion it's considerably better than Angry Birds and is well worth the low price to have it on the iPhone.
I've heard this, but nothing can compare to the deliciously evil laughter from the birds.
There's honestly no reason not to have both (games that can be played whilst sandwiched uncomfortably between people on the train are a godsend), and it's worth mentioning that CtC actually has totally different levels from the PC version, and they're doing the Angry Birds thing of adding new content when they can.

Hey guys, i'm lame and unable to use the search function properly, but did anybody get Aera? Lunker, did you get it? I was thinking of taking a look, since a review i read somewhere referenced Nights Into Dreams regarding the style of movement, which got me intrigued.
The Quest Gold is on sale for 5.99. This includes the original game and three expansions. These are Might and Magic / Wizardry style rpgs. Probably a hundredish hours of gameplay and pretty well reviewed on toucharcade. There's a demo and the individual games are on sale as well (gold pack is cheaper).
So for space miner, I have hit a wall. I am at the last boss for hardcore and can't get past his third recharge. I've got all the top equipment except for a low scanner to save on energy. I'm playing with the battle hull right now, and I've done a mix of alien tech combos from +energy for more starcore ii's to a more defensive set-up with prevent stun, -asteroid dmg and +20 shield recharge.
Any tips? I can get past first recharge easily, on the second recharge I can occasionally beat him with full sheilds, but the third recharge the boss charge usually hits me a few times before I can escape, and his lasers don't help ofc.
I might give the speed hull a shot and maybe I can avoid the boss charges better, but the health is almost half as much.
Hey, did i read it wrong, or did Radio Flare REDUX just come out? I was looking through some sites, and came across that, but didn't yet have a chance to check on itunes...
I liked the first one, apart from the fairly monotonous soundtrack, and the stupidly large ship, but from the trailer, it looks as though they've improved matters somewhat.
God bless live-action FMV trailers- i was worried they'd gone forever after the 90s!

Huh.... so The Red Star is coming out in iPhone. I hope it controls well, though I have my doubts. It's interesting how long it took to come out for PS2, how it almost didn't come out and was cancelled (twice, I think), and then out of nowhere.... iPhone port! :P

Anyone know why certain apps like, 200 Great Books or Dictionary have tracking as part of the app?
Why, and to whom is it important where I am when I use the App?

Is there anything sort of like audiosurf for the ipod? I remember seeing something a few years ago that was a simple three-track game that played sort of like ninja mono on audiosurf, but I can't find anything like that now. Are there any games available that are mapped to music selection?

I had some trouble with that stage of the boss as well; died the first attempt. I had the battleship with 5 front-facing Starcore IIs equipped (no turret), with a bit less than top-of-the-line shields & engines, and just the starter ore picker-upper. I had the best energy reactor and the alien tech that gives another 50.
My slow acceleration made it really hard to dodge things, so when it came to that final stage I just stood still, aimed at the boss, and held down the trigger hoping his health bar would empty before mine. It did.
I finally beat the boss by taking out the collector (oops) which allowed me to put in another starcore, think I had 4. I went more defensive, and I realized u can attack without ramming him into asteroids which helped. Working on the <4 hour completion and no deaths on easy atm, think I have another run through with the base hull before I'm done.
Surprisingly enough, the iPhone guys at GAF (a forum that loved SF4 to pieces) are genuinely surprised at how good it turned out, particularly the controls. When it goes on sale, I might pick it up out of sheer curiosity.
I'm also really warming to FF1; I kind of bought it out of nostalgia, but even though it's the really easy-fied version I haven't played the game in so long that some of it actually feels fresh again. Plus, having it in my pocket all of the time is a big plus; I can play for five minutes, put it away and auto-resume whenever I want. The only major blow is apparently not being able to play my own music in the background; dungeon-crawling would be perfect for podcast-listening fodder.
Eh, 10 bucks for SF4 just strikes me as a little steep. If it came out at something like 7-8, i'd buy it. Actually, all the Japanese-made games (not singling Japan out or anything, just an observation) i've bought, or been interested in have been at higher prices (Glandarius, Infinity Gene, and SQUAREENIX, i'm looking at you, you asshats). Sure, 10 dolla soldierboy is not much to pay for a game, but when they start releasing stuff at that price as standard, how long before we see 15?
By the time you guys read this, i'll probably have bought it already.
Oh, my copy of Puzzle Quest helpfully reminded me that chapter 3 is out. Buh? Is that something that's going out to the other systems, or just the iPhone?
Then again I made a Puzzle Quest 2 thread a few days ago and maybe three people replied. Sounds like this board is officially done with the game.

Don't worry, I saw it but just had little to add at the time. Though personally, Might & Magic Clash of Heroes kind of out Puzzle-Quested PQ1 for me. I still have PQ Chapters 1&2 on my iPhone and I haven't played it too much, though game ADD is kind of a way of iPhone life.
I'm kind of glad I passed on Galactrix, as the vibe I got is that a bunch of people jumped in day 1 and got burned by it. And then there was Gyromancer and a handful of other PQ-ish clones, so I guess the novelty wore off a bit. But if PQ2 shapes up nicely and adds enough to make an upgrade worthwhile, I'll welcome the return of the king.

I liked Puzzle Quest a lot but it just seemed to get boring. Sort of turning into every round was the same thing, I guess like everything else I got distracted by other shiny things though. I need to return to it.
To make matters worse I bought the bundle that had Gyromancer in it today off steam.

I think Space Invaders Infinity Gene has a mode like that.
There is a game mode called music mode that lets you use your own music to create a level. Based on beats per minute and other such factors the game creates a unique level with enemies depending on the information found inside your chosen song. This really makes the game worthy of the word infinity as you can experiment with the music mode until the end of the world. I have had the same experience as fellow writer Nathan that Swedish metal gives some hellish levels. I tried Swedish metal band Raubtier and the level became near impossible whereas Metallica’s “Broken, beat and scarred” became quite easy. Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” became cool and varied whereas Swedish children’s music became as boring as it sounds. Also tried some noise music but it didn’t translate into as hard levels as Swedish metal. I think this mode is pure genius having your own music as template for a level.
I finally picked up Puzzle Quest now that I could grab all three chapters. You have to cut it some slack since it's real old and all, but god damn the lack of polish is a disappointment. There are just so many simple UI elements that they could've spent ten minutes re-drawing instead of upscaling – it really brings the whole experience down. Menus go off the side of the screen. Text is blurry. What the hell, guys?
On a lighter note, I had a lot of fun with Gundead Defense, which was free as of a few days ago. It's a different take on the tower defense genre where you have to both defend and attack simultaneously. Managing your resources on two fronts makes for a fun diversion from normal TD games.

Holy fucking crap. It reminds me soo much of Quest for Glory, minus the oldschool Sierra humour anyway.
I'm buying this game day one. I already love my iPhone, but I'm constantly surprised at just what people can pull off with this little machine.
so impressed
definitely getting it when it comes out
I've had this on my radar since the announcement and teaser image, but fuck, does that look awesome. Quest for Glory is a perfect comparison point.
I'd heard of Superbrothers before, back when their video for Dot Matrix Revolution made some blog rounds a while back. It's a very distinct pixel style, and I think it lends itself really awesome to this Swords & Sworcery project.
via Tony Hawk's twitter. "In the PR world, this is considered "going rogue," but I'm too excited to contain it. This is real & dropping soon. http://post.ly/SMo5"
And I'm not a huge Tony Hawk PS1 guy; is that THPS1 or 2, or something else? If it's one of the originals, I think a ton of people are going to poop themselves.
Thinking aloud: Would anyone particularly mind if I asked a mod to lock this old thread and I started a new one? I think a more organized OP and some more descriptive thread titles would drum up more interest and help people figure out what games are actually worth looking at.
EDIT: I'm also just desperate to show people this new video of the next project from Steph Firion (the dev behind Eliss): Faraway.
I loved Eliss to death, even though it kicked my ass and I still haven't finished it. The whole aesthetic has such a BitGenerations / Art Style feel to it, and in particular it reminds me of Orbital on the GBA. Looks really mellow and relaxing.
I'm liking plants vs. zombies a whole lot. How much did cut from this version though? I assume it must have been something significant considering the difference in price.

A shitload of mini-games, endless mode, and a few gardens to cultivate. Endless mode is what kept me coming back to the original version, so I was bummed out when I saw it was removed.
