Tilt to Live is, for now, at least, my only reason to live. The tilt controls work beautifully, and it's got that Just One More Oh God What Time Is It I Need To Go To Sleep appeal that kept Geometry Wars and Pac-Man CE at the top of my must-play list for years. The animation and art style go a long way to making it feel fresh, too.

So did anyone have enough cash to get SFIV yet? Give us your impressions?

I'm sorely tempted, but am AFMycomputer till Monday, so thankfully will not get wallet-raped this weekend.

It uses an onscreen dpad, ergo, they will be shit. Some games can be good enough to survive despite the shit touchscreen dpad (GTA), but not many. Seems an odd choice too, surely tilt controls would feel quite natural with a skateboard game.

No. What people should be talking about is how stupid it is that in Canada you can't use gift card credit to purchase apps. I mean seriously Apple? WTF? I got a gift card for my bday over the weekend and bought 2 apps before realizing my credit wasn't going down. Bahh.

Yeah I posted up about it being free on release day. To be honest I've only played it a few times but it's pretty good fun and a very interesting concept. Would love to see something similar on consoles as you try to differentiate between npc and pc.

Ultras/Supers are done by tapping the appropriate meter. Probably a better solutions than trying to do motion x 2 + 3 buttons.

I downloaded it when it was free but never went back to play it again after the last patch that fixed the constant drop in games.

On a side note, I've been playing a lot of Godfinger (and annoyed a bunch of people on facebook with its many, many updates on it).

I also finally decided to buy TILT TO LIVE and it's a really, really good game. Reminds me a lot of Gyometry wars on XBLA, but with prettier graphics, power up system (you can't shoot, just move, power ups are the only way to destroy the red dots) and tilt movement. I highly recommand it.

It's starts off very easy but ramps up to hard similar to flight control or geometry wars. The controls are really awesome (and I dislike 99% of tilt controls). Every time I've lost, I've felt that it was my fault and not due to their control scheme.

I'm putting Flight Control and Tilt to Live as my favorite examples on how to do simple iPhone games right. I've spent more time with Tilt to Live in the last couple days than most of my $60 gaming purchases.

Surely you're not comparing tilting a board that you are standing on, to tilting a device with your hand? Or suggesting that a dpad control scheme was the best choice because RIDE was crap? They're completely different and not even remotely comparable.

Guys, i grabbed SFIV last night, ignoring the cries of my bank account. First impressions, not having played the 'real' one recently, are quite good. The shortcuts for supers can be turned off, although i think you can still do ultras by tapping the relevant meter, but you can also do it by QCFx2 then the SP button. I haven't played enough to find if this command is different for each character. [EDIT] They are, yes.

Control- wise, it seems that some adjustment of my own movement was needed- like the way you'd move the thumb on the virtual stick is different from if you'd used a pad- like i'd normally tap onto the pad, then onto down and forward for SRK, but here, it's more like sliding around. Once i'd made that slight change, it's controlling pretty nicely.

Animation feels a bit choppy, because of the mental disconnnect seeing the rendered characters, and thinking they should move in a fitting manner, but it's a little more like SF2 in that regard, but not as bad as in the 16-bit era.

It all runs very smoothly, plays well, and i can't help thinking that there's an awful lot of wasted space on the character select screen, making me wonder if Capcom are setting us up for DLC characters (hope so, but they can and WILL shaft us price-wise if they do.)

I'm putting Flight Control and Tilt to Live as my favorite examples on how to do simple iPhone games right. I've spent more time with Tilt to Live in the last couple days than most of my $60 gaming purchases.

Tilt to Live is also one of my most-played games in the past two weeks, iPhone or otherwise. It just does so many little things right; it's addictive and easy to pick up for a few minutes, and the tilt controls are pitch perfect. I can't really explain why they're so good; they feel weighty, I suppose? Like, other tilt-controlled games tend to be really jittery and touchy, so you end up spazzing all over the place, but in Tilt to Live you really have to tilt the iPhone hard to move fast, so it gives you amazing precision. I definitely agree that any time I've died, it hasn't been due to control problems, and I'm used to bullet-scraping from shmups like Ikaruga or Raiden Fighter Aces. I don't think you can adjust the sensitivity, but you can adjust your neutral position.

But the way it handles unlocks and the faux achievements is brilliant as well. To open up more of the weapons and powerups, you have to dick around with the game and pick up achievements; at certain intervals of not-Gamerscore points, you open up new weapons that are available for full usage. So this little one-screen game (very reminiscent of pacifism mode from Geo Wars 2) ends up having multiple goals: You can just play for high score like always, or you can make it a point to pick up achievements (like a literal Pacifism one for not triggering weapons for X seconds, or only using nukes, or triggering 50 nukes in one game, etc.) in order to unlock more and better powerups that'll conversely help you in the main game. I was able to unlock all of the weapons fairly quickly, but some of the remaining achievements are crazy (get x1337 multiplier, score 1 million points, and so on). My high score is about 660k, but I definitely need to put more time into it.

The whole presentation and animation style is really refreshing, too. It's not a straight Geo Wars clone in terms of aesthetics, and the bubbly menus and art style is really Apple-esque. It feels like it should have been a built-in iPhone game, like Solitaire is to Windows. And it was a freaking dollar, so there's that too. Even at regular price of $1.99, I highly recommend it.

Hello, The Penny Arcade. Haven't posted in here a long time but I thought this might be worth sharing. Basically I have made a game for iPhone/iTouch and it is available on the app store as of last night. It is called iJumpman and it looks like this:

    ijumpman_1.PNGijumpman_2.PNG

(You can also find a gameplay video, and a copy of the PC/mac version which has been out a while and is free, here).

The game is basically a love letter to old Apple // era platformers, positing what would happen if you took the worlds those games presented much too seriously and started trying to work out answers to a bunch of questions that probably didn't need to be asked, like "where are all these single-screen rooms in relation to each other?" or "how is it pac man can go off the right side of the screen and come back on the left?".

The iPhone version has some interesting improvements over the PC version, including an online trading feature for user-created levels and a gesture control system. Judging from the PC version the wrinkle people seemed to remember most in the original game was a mechanic where you could press a button to "rotate the world", rearranging the level appropriately; in the iPhone version this is replaced with actually just turning the iPhone sideways, and gravity adjusts itself such that Jumpman and everything in the level falls "down" from your perspective. Movement mostly just consists of swiping a finger whereever it was you wanted to go, so you can do this without interrupting whatever else you're doing. The result is a gameplay experience I find really unique, the game world is like a physical thing you're holding in your hands. (There's also a button control scheme if this doesn't do it for you.)

Hope someone finds this amusing :)

Chaos Ring looks really nice because it's really expensive. Well, for the average app.

I was coming over here to post about Chaos Rings -- looks and sounds incredibly promising.

    JP trailer
    Screenshots
    http://www.facebook.com/notes/square...h/379199831300

    Official website
    http://dlgames.square-enix.com/chaosrings/

    ----
    Chaos Rings (iPhone)

    Background
    - Brand new Square Enix RPG
    - Polygonal characters overlaid on hand drawn backgrounds, fully polygonal in battles
    - Developed by Media.Vision (Wild ARMS, RIZ-ZOAWD)
    - Producer is Takehiro Ando (producer of Crystal Defenders)
    - Story by Yukinori Kitajima - scenario writer of 428 (sound novel) and Okamiden (Okami 2)
    - Character designs by Yusuke Naora (art director of FFVII, VIII, X)
    - Music by Noriyasu Agematsu (composer for some songs in Wild ARMS 5)

    Premise
    - The story of Chaos Rings revolves around a battle tournament "Arka Arena"
    - Five teams of two enter into the tournament for a forced fight to the death
    - Shadowy spokesman for the tournament promises eternal life and youth for the winner
    - The game is made up of five scenarios (playthroughs) in all
    - Each playthrough revolves around one of the five teams of two
    - The pairs you are not in control of face against you as rivals
    - To uncover the full story all five playthroughs must be completed

    Progression
    - The main progression is in the tournament arena called "Arka Arena"
    - The Chaos Rings title refers to this multiple zoned arena
    - Outside of this arena, special doors lead you to different dungeons around the world
    - In each dungeon you open treasure chests and combat enemies to gain experience
    - At the heart of each dungeon lies a final boss

    Gameplay
    - Battles are turn-based
    - You control both partners within the team
    - Attacks divided between "solo" and "pair" commands
    - Pair attacks execute special combo skills and greater damage, but opens up both partners to damage
    - Strategic play is promised as HP is only replenished after a battle
    - Fights can be against multiple enemies at once
    - Once enemies are defeated, you can acquire their genetic information
    - These genes can then be equipped to grant skills
    - Genes can evolve after use in battle and produce new skills

    Other
It looks like Famitsu was given the chance to play Chaos Rings in advance.

"I was surprised at how smooth the 3D graphics were," Famitsu magazine wrote in a preview published in this week's issue. "I honestly didn't think that the iPhone was capable of such pretty 3D visuals. The controls are also innovative -- you can touch and drag your finger anywhere on the screen to move your characters around. It doesn't rely on using one hand over the other, so it's really easy to play."

"The strategic battle system is the most interesting part of the game," Famitsu wrote. "Your HP is refilled after each battle, but each individual fight is pretty intense. If you're short on HP, you have to agonize over whether to attack solo or in pairs. It's a lot of fun!"

The game looks like it will have a western release. Recently the title "Chaos Rings" was trademarked by SquareEnix for Europe: http://www.siliconera.com/2009/12/03...e-chaos-rings/

Plus I think I played this before... when it was called Final Fantasy 7.

Yuck if true, but where did you see this? I wouldn't necessarily put it past S-E to push past the unspoken $9.99 barrier for games, but $30 seems like lunacy.
Plus I think I played this before... when it was called Final Fantasy 7.

If the Touch Arcade summaries are to be believed, it sounds more like a SaGa-inspired dungeon crawler or something to that effect. It definitely has some of the good ol' S-E JRPG tropes sitting there in the trailer already, but I wouldn't write it off just yet. And the framerate is a little janky (this reminds me of a long-lost PS1 game, really), but more turn-based RPGs would be great on the system.

If the price point is true, though, then yeah, burn the fuckers down.

So I guess this would be the most appropriate place to ask without making a new thread.

Can anyone recommend any video recording apps for a 3G? Price isn't that much of a factor as I have iTunes credit - I'm mainly concerned with video quality and battery consumption. There's about fifty available and none of them have a trial.

If you guys don't support it, then games like Chaos Ring don't get made.

This isn't some victory: you're not going to get S-E to start pushing out games at a loss. Expensive games offer greater choice. This is like WiiWare of XBLA only backwards: a slow push out of the $9.99 ceiling for some higher-end offerings. There's still money to be made on cheaper fare.

Oh 'Tilt to Live' is so ridiculously good and polished, can't recommend it enough and can't believe I got it for only 59p

EDIT: Also I strongly agree with Rorus. Just because so many developers are churning out 59p shovelware, doesn't make that an acceptable business model even if it is the norm.

A higher price point is no problem by me if it brings with it a higher quality of apps and gets the big companies treating the device as one of the major platforms.

But I disagree a little on there being money to be made on the cheaper fare. The low price point of most apps has set a disappointing standard, while developer costs are more than people think even for small offerings.

Anyone else playing We Rule? It's Ngmoco's free-to-play, Farmville-esque kingdom building game. I always thought Farmville was a bit obnoxious, but I'm enjoying this (when the servers aren't down – it's been a rough launch). Maybe it's because I know I'm not spamming my friends' news feeds every time I build something.

My kingdom isn't much of anything at the moment, but I'm JamesDekk on Plus+ if anyone else is playing. I don't have any just yet, but apparently one of the game mechanics revolves around building shops and having friends visit them to get money and experience for both players. So, I could use some friends. :P

As long as the quality is there, I don't mind paying more for iPhone games. That said, I don't want this to set a precedence similar to Activision's move with hiking MW2's price in Europe "just 'cuz".

Pricing on the App Store has always been a slippery slope. A lot of high quality games charge 99c just to compete. Everyone undercut each other right out of higher profits, which is great for us consumers, not so great for the devs.

I'm all for game devs getting paid what they're worth. It's probably hard making a living off of selling 99c games. I just don't want to see a situation where prices on the App Store start to inflate dramatically because SE proved that people are willing to pay a high price for games afterall.

    A. I've never paid, nor will I pay, 30 bucks for an XBLA/WW game. Ever.
    B. No one is asking for Chaos Ring.

It's nice they're making something so polished. But is/was anyone in this thread asking for it? We're all just fine with our .99 Angry Birds and Tilt to Live.

Hey, if the app store gets SqEnix to release their delicious brand of refined and interesting game mechanics on a faster scale than every few years for the flagship titles, I am all for it.
