I got the Mitchell DVD for Christmas and watched it last night.

I'd seen Final Justice before and was somewhat prepared for the Joe Don Baker onslaught.
But only somewhat.
Final Justice, for all its faults (namely, "starring" Joe Don Baker) at least gets the generic loose-cannon cop genre. Mitchell fails the genre on almost all fronts - the title "hero" does almost nothing on his own and nothing makes any sense. At all.
Anyway, it was hilarious and an excellent end cap to the Joel era.
http://www.mst3kinfo.com - the source for MST3k related information on the Internet. Been up for as long as I remember being a fan, which is to say, for over 10 years now.
http://www.dapcentral.org - want to actually download episodes at the best quality available instead of watching them on youtube? (Some of them are even available as DVDs, which run 4GB, while normal episodes run around 700 MB.) Then look no further. Their software is clunky to use, but it's totally worth it. Newer rips can be streamed to your device of choice, and some episodes are available on DVD. I suspect most of the YT and Google Vidoes come from here. They do no have episodes which have been or will be released on DVD, so no Manos, Mitchell, etc.
I like the one his wife joined in on. NEXT is the movie they were making fun of.
I have yet to see that.
One thing I kinda like about the Rifftrax, is that they seem a little less scripted. I'm sure they aren't, but they allow themselves to react a little more to their own commentary which makes it seem a little more natural.
And I whole-heartedly agree with Shoe on the above point.
I adore MST3k.
I've seen nearly every Rifftrax released so far. The best are the movies you expect to be horrible, like Star Wars prequels, Daredevil, or The Happening. Trying to watch those without Mike and the guys is intolerable. 300 was a movie I walked home from thinking, "Damn, I can't wait till they make fun of this." The Dark Knight riff was just okay.
I've also been tempted in getting Santa vs. The Martians re-riffed by the Cinematic Titanic crew, (big fuck you to Mike by reriffing a movie he did on MST3k), but the conversion rate on the dollar is shit-tacular at the moment so it's a no-go with the wife. The best Cinematic Titanic movie they've riffed was their first, The Oozing Skull.
the scene with him playing Michael Feinstein playing the Gamera song (which I posted earlier) is one of my favorite MST moments ever
Joel never could have pulled that off with such a fantastic balance of class and humor
Comparing the two post-MST3k shows, While Cinematic Titanic has the luxury of picking and buying the worst crap for each of there releases, they are going for quality over quantity. Buying the distribution rights for each movie they mock means it is significantly more expensive to produce. They have a lot more writers, so it's crucial that each of their releases is great. They are a big loss if they can't recoup the cost of shooting the episode, and piracy hurts them a lot more.
Rifftrax is forced to stick to more popular bad movies someone might have or be able to rent easily and has no filming schedule. This is a detriment because they usually stay to new releases. That means they can pump out commentaries for two movies a month or more, but those movies aren't always ripe for comedy. Rifftrax also does guest riffers like Weird Al, or the Neil Patrick Harris. NPH riffing on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was great. One of my favorites of all time.
The writing is better for Cinematic Titanic because it takes them longer to make an episode and they have more people working on each episode. While I still like Rifftrax a lot, Cinematic Titanic doesn't have nearly the volume of poo/fart jokes that Rifftrax uses to get through a dull scene. There are still a lot more Rifftrax episodes that are comedy gold though.
I heard that CT was a bit underwhelming. I hope not because I want to get around to watching those.
Also the new silhouette positions are weird.
The Oozing Skull is great. The Wasp Woman, Doomsday Machine, The Legacy of Blood are like an average episode of MST3k. I've rewatched Cinematic Titanic episodes multiple times and enjoyed them. Rewatching a Rifftrax is much more rare for me.
Have any of you gotten any of those rifftrax things?
And are they as good as the old MST3k?
In my head I imagine them not being because the movie they are doing are not nearly as hilariously awful.
I love Rifftrax. The ones with Mike or Mike and a guest tend to not be good imo (Troll 2 being the exception) but when it's Mike, Bill, and Kevin...man, funny shit. Best one yet for me has been the Star Wars Holiday Special. I've watched it twice and still managed to laugh so hard my sides hurt.
Joel had a more whimsical irreverent style and I find that I smile along to his episodes and the madness, and with Mike I burst out laughing because he hits those gags dead on.

Plus, it bears mentioning that we wouldn't have MST3K without Joel Hodgeson.

especially the part where he just screams at the kid
"JUST BUZZ OFF KID!"

I heard that Joel wanted to do Mystie again but Jim Mallon wouldn't agree. Seems strange as they all just did the comic con together.
Is Giant Spider Invasion on DVD? That's the best one.
I love that episode. The sheriff/Gilligan Island jokes killed me.
That episode also turned "PACKERS WON THE SUPERBOOOOOOWL!" into a catch phrase with my friends.

Space Mutiny has got to be the best episode ever.

They just wanted you to feel better about being so terrible.
