The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So I've suddenly gone into a RTS binge (Defcon, RA3, CoH) and then realized that I really missed the gameplay of Myth (by Bungie).
Basically, no base-building, no teching. You build your army before the game and then duke it out.
Yeah there's the Total War series but in a way, they can be a little dry because it's just history (though I'm looking forward to the next TW game) and system requirements for epic battles can be punishing. None of those wights and dwarves with bombs blowing themselves up. Space games would work too and the closest thing is Nexus: The Jupiter Incident but that game kinda devolved into who has the most Ebombs from what I remember. Not sure if there's even really a multiplayer community for it left.
Hmm, I guess I need to add an additional requirement. It needs to also actually have a thriving community (does GC still have that?). :P
World in Conflict for sure would have that, though I think it's still about capturing points isn't it?
Definitely looking forward to DoW 2 though it's a shame MP will not be the same. System requirements will probably be even heavier than CoH as well (yay upgrade time?)
Hell, it's upgrade time as soon as you finish upgrading. As soon as the parts are out of the box, they're obsolete.
Not always, I built my computer around 2 years ago and the only thing I want to replace is the video card (which was from a previous computer anyways).

I'm just jealous because I'm stuck with a laptop and a desktop with a P4 and AGP mobo.

Ouch. I know your pain, my first computer that I built was AGP, right when AGP was being phased out for PCI-e. I wasn't very happy about that at all.
Also, I know DoW2 has been mentioned but the original is still really good, I recently got into it with some friends of mine and it's been a blast.
Actually that's one of my dilemmas about DoW or CoH. I have both and have a hard time picking which to play. DoW runs better but CoH has a better engine (especially for vehicles, though morale would be nice)

Maybe I'll give WiC another look.
I dunno - CoH seems much more tactical, and therefore myth-like, than DoW, which has a more robust base building component.
Multiwinia is a lot like Myth, but I don't know if the community is "thriving." I'm sure you can always find a match though.
You should also try to find Z. It is hard to search for so you might need to qualify it with something like Z95 or rts or bitmap brothers. It is basically capture the territory and there is no base building or resource management at all. The community is small but fanatical. Avoid the 3D sequel (Z Steel Soldiers) as it is buggy and not nearly as good as the 2D original.
I also second the nod for World in Conflict. It's a great game with a fairly active community.

Yeah Ground Control is basically what you're looking for. Plus it will run on any machine.
It is free.

Isn't the former game much much better than the later one?
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
