So I'm getting a game for my girlfreind. She has a PS2. When I asked her what kind of games she likes (shes not a big gamer), she said that she liked Kingdom Hearts a lot, and hated Final Fantasy. She said she hated how Final Fantasy was turned based, and loved the 'gameplay' of kingdom hearts, and how you made your characters stronger as the game progressed.
So I need an RPG with similar gameplay to Kingdom Hearts, not turn based combat, for the PS2.
Any ideas at all would be helpful, as I'm kind of lost here. Thanks.
I assume she has also played Kingdom Hearts II? Maybe check out Dark Cloud 2, that was a good RPG that was not turn based.
Okami is a good suggestion. I dunno about .hack. It is a fun game, but unless she is into anime, she may have a hard time getting into the story and all. It's not nearly as accessable as Kingdom Hearts.
You choices are gonna be limited though if you are restricting yourself to Kingdom Hearts clones. If you're willing to stray into other genres you may want to think about the first Jak and Daxter game. It was a really good platformer/action game with some light story thrown in. The sequels were crap IMO. I'd also recomend Shadow of the Collosus, it is very accessible and a lot of fun to play. But that is pretty far outside what you're asking for.
I know it was suggested earlier, but, if she really enjoyed Kingdom Hearts and hasn't played 2, then maybe get that for her (It sounds like it could be a cop-out/easy choice, but if she enjoys it...)
The Tales series sound right up her alley - standard RPG plot progressions with active combat and characters that level up and gain new abilities. Go with Tales of the Abyss (and Tales of Symphonia, if you have access to a Gamecube).
Also, this isn't an RPG, but all girls (and people in general) love Katamari.
OP said she doesn't like games that are turn-based. Just because you can run around the field while moves are charging doesn't make FFXII any less turn-based.
Yes, it's all sorts of awesome, but if she's not a fan of FF in general and doesn't like turn-based game, I can't see her liking this one.
Here are my two: It's already been mentioned, but X-Men Legends was a lot of fun, they're a sequel, and there's co-op so you can play together. If you think she'd dig a non-RPG, pick up LEGO Star Wars and/or its sequel. Simple, fun, and the co-op, again, is great.

If we're talking hack'n'slash rpg, then I would suggest Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, or maybe Champions of Norrath I and/or II. My wife and I love those games as co-op experiences, but I don't know if she would dig the dungeon-crawling aspect so much. Still, we enjoyed leveling our characters and questing.
Wow, I diodnt expect this many replies, thanks a lot.
Yeah, shes not really a hardcore game person by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, the only games I've ever really seen her play is Kingdom Hearts, and I'm almost positive she has 2 also. She's also played Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari at my house, and seemed to like them a lot. Again though, shes not really the gamer type by any means, the only reason I'm even thinking about getting her a game is because she said she wanted to get a new game for PS2 but didnt know what to look for.
So yeah, I'm going to ask her freind about what kind of games she likes and ill post back here. In the meantime, I'll take a look at some of the suggestions. I'mm post back here again tonight. Thanks a lot, guys.
I second the Lego Star Wars suggestion. It's easy to pick up and play, the graphics are cute and it's good fun. My girlfriend and I played through it together and had a blast, and she never really plays games at all.

I would start with Psychonauts. It's fun and not dumbed down at all like many action games are. It's also funny.
I really want to recommend Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles because it's not turn based, but sadly, only the Gamecube.
She might like X-Men Legends.
I'm trying to think what my girlfriend plays the most on PS2, and Psychonauts is all I can come up with.
Oh! Steambot Chronicles! Rent that one first though, cuz it's kinda quirky and doesn't appeal to everyone.
Good luck, and let us know what you picked and how she liked it!
