Is 3ds max 2009 the best option for learning to use 3d max in book form? Or are there better books out there?

I don't think it's worthwhile to learn 3dsmax from a book. The tutorials that come with 3dsmax and the help files are more than enough to get you started. Just go through all the tutorials, from the first to the last. Don't skip around, just do them all, completely, in order. After that, there are tons of online tutorials to go through. I've tried some of the books before, but they always have been unimpressive imo.

yeah, theres always a chapter in the middle that goes "push vertexes around" then skips to setting up IK bones. its like they forget the chapter titled "then magic happens".

i found 90% of the battle was learning the interface, as it is unlike anything else on earth. and thinking in 3d is a pain too.
