Genndy Tartakovsky is probably the best man Cartoon Network ever had.

What's he up to at the moment?

Timm and Dini are up there. The DCAU is amazing.

McCracken deserves credit as well. PPG is tons of fun and Foster's is brilliant.

No doubt. Also, Tartakovsky had a big hand in PPG as well, on all four fronts; producer, writer, director, and animator.

Well I would hope Genndy had a big hand in PPG; It was his own series after all.

No, McCracken created PPG. Tartakovsky created Dexter.

The addition of Toph was amazing. I thought the group worked so well when it was just the three of them, but once they introduced her character I couldn't imagine the show working without her.

How old are all of you? I tried watching it because of how many praised it but it just seemed to be way too much of a kids show to sit through. I know it's a kids show but a lot of kids shows are still funny to adults.

I just turned 29 a few days ago.

Well than I don't get it. Maybe I'll give it a few more episodes because I pretty much love all the other cartoons you just mentioned.

I suspect the problem is that you're expecting an "adult" cartoon.

That's not what this show is. It's a great show for kids, but it also is a great show for grown-ups. The best way I can describe it is to paraphrase how Lasseter (or was it Brad Bird? I don't remember) talks about Pixar movies. They don't make a show specifically for kids, they just make a damn good show that also happens to not have anything that's inappropriate for kids.

I think a better description would be friendly entertainment that's aimed at kids, but doesn't pander to them. It doesn't have any of the mindless slapstick or dumb plot holes that makes a lot of kid-aimed stuff hard for adults to sit through.

They put an incredible level of effort into it that made the show very appealing on a much wider level, so it's very easy for adults that still enjoy animation to get a big kick out of it.

McCracken and Tartakovsky worked up the ladder together early in their careers when they both worked on 2 Stupid Dogs at the same time. You'll see one's hands in the other's work quite often.

Yeah, a couple of my friends in college got Season 2 when it came out on DVD. They were watching it as I came to see them one day. I sat to watch the episode all about Appa and I thought they were crazy (cut me a bit of slack; they had The OC on DVD too.) Then I saw a different episode some other time (I think it was Zuko Alone) and I decided to give it a shot.

EDIT: Also, I give the writers a metric ton of credit for keeping the show self-aware, as portrayed brilliantly in The Ember Island Players.

I got the complete series for christmas. :D

It's interesting to see how the quality of the animation really picks up in the second season.

Also, there are a lot of plot elements they borrowed for both the new Batman movies.

Music played a huge part in that, in how it enhanced whatever mood the scene was trying to set.

The whole orchestra sound worked so well with everything.

It's big shame that there's no available soundtrack of the series.

Also, It's kind of hard to imagine exactly how much of the show's music is actually found within 15 tracks.

I'll more than likely get it, regardless, but it'd nice to have some idea.

I'm pretty sure it's just the main song from whatever episode the title corresponds to.

I haven't gone through all of them yet, but "Perchance to Dream" is pretty rad.
