That's right! The legendary arcade game returns... on the DS!

I'm really enjoying it so far, especially the ability to start from any stage you've finished, and playing as Ralph and Clark from King of Fighters. But, alas, I have a problem. I have gotten to the third stage, and there is a part where you have to run from a large cannonball down a slope. There's a box with an arrow pointing up and what appears to be a crank on the side, and an arrow appears that says "GO!" pointing down. But nothing I do will help me escape inevitable death by giant rolling ball. I've tried shooting the box, jumping on it, throwing bombs at it, and nothing happens. I just keep getting killed by the giant rolling cannonball over and over and over again until I run out of continues. HALP

Now, normally I would not make a whole thread for a problem like this, I would just resurrect the old one, but I can't seem to find ANY Metal Slug 7 thread that is more than 2 pages long, and those are both about trailers and died months before the game actually came out. If I somehow missed the thread, feel free the lock this and point me in the right direction.

Feel free to discuss other Metal Slug games as well, I also have the anthology on the Wii and it is excellent.

EDIT: To really get a better idea of how this game looks, for those of you considering buying it, here's a gameplay video of the first 2 levels. Note that this person is playing Beginner mode, in which you always have a heavy machine gun.

You really have to see this game in motion to understand what makes it great, the sprites are smaller on the DS but are animated just as perfectly as ever.

What I like about Metal Slug is they really stay true to the source. I've never played a Metal Slug game I didn't like.

What happens when you turn the crank by standing next to it and press shoot?

Ah, that did the trick. I didn't know how to turn the crank, and somehow managed not to figure it out while I was wildly jump around it. *smacks forehead*

I like how Metal Slug makes no apologies for the fact that it's still a side-scroller and pretty much stands as a testament to the badass-ery of retro gaming.

We all know Oblivion was better than Morrowind, right?....RIGHT!?

As far as Metal Slug is concerned, gaming never left the arcade. It's still the same basic gameplay that it's had since the very beginning, and it's still as good as it's ever been. It's very refreshing.

Seriously. There's no way to deny that Metal Slug is one of the most frustratingly difficult games ever.

Right behind The Karate Kid for the NES.

Also of note: The game comes with a foil? slipcover, similar to the old Working Designs material. Or I guess Kirby Superstar Ultra.

God, I have great memories of playing Metal Slug with a friend in a French ski resort - we must have spent half our money and free time on that machine, and covered most of the leader board.

This may be an incentive to dust off my DS again, although I say that about most new games.

I've been extremely tempted to buy this, but my Futureshop gift cards are going to Uncharted for my PS3 I think. (so tempted though)

That's the thing - it doesn't look like it should be hard. Enemy bullets flash colors and float slowly through the air. Bosses don't have weak points - they're whole bodies are open to attack. To a person looking over your shoulder while you play, it doesn't look hard at all. The series is deceptive!

I have always found the Metal Slug series impossible to get into at home. It is designed to eat quarters. When I can't feed it quarters it feels so ... empty.

I got this game for Christmas, but I've only just started playing.

I will say that it's extremely good.

I find that I'm more willing to die over and over at a game than most of my friends, and so when I try to get them to play Metal Slug, they tend to get bored.

    But I love it so!

I think I might go and pick this up within the next couple days. Looks like it might be a pretty sweet game to get.

Get bored? How the hell? Is it because you're playing with unlimited credits on?

I find that sometimes playing with unlimited credits can get boring because you lose any incentive to preserve your life, and end up just jumping whereever and unloadings clips/nades until everything dies.

Personally I always try to limit my credits when I play these games because I feel as though it forces you to play the game the way it's meant to be played.

But of course I also like having the option for unlimited credits because sometimes I just want to blast my way through everything :P

It also comes with a mini-CD of some kind with some artwork from Metal Slug and, strangely, Blue Dragon on it. I assume it's a short "soundtrack" with a couple of songs from these games but I have not tried it out yet, and I don't have the disc with me right now.

Yeah, it's because of the unlimited credits. The alternative, that is, trying to talk my friends into playing Metal Slug with limited credits, just doesn't work. When we've tried that, we'll get to the second level, run out, and be pretty much done.

Sounds like they just can't handle a real game. Like they have to be babied by these newfangled regenerative health systems and easy respawn points and what have you!

Also, running out of credits on Level 2 is weaksauce. Seriously, do your friends even play videogames?

I must say that I'm enjoying this one a LOT more than 6, but that may be simply because I hated the new aliens in 6. They showed up too early and stayed invincible for too long, very annoying.

Now, TIME TRAVEL TERRORISTS (yes, they're terrorists), that is something I can get behind.

There aren't any guides online for this game. :( I want to know what Marco's salvo power is all about. The instruction manual says to hold UP, L button, and fire to have Marco fire in place but it doesn't look like it does anything at all.

I know it's coming for XBLA, but I am unsure as to whether a PSN version was announced.

it's a truly awesome metal slug game.

Shame that people aren't buying it.
