I guess it is around that time I start to go searching for scholarships but I have no ideal where to start and with so many options it is very overwhelming. Where do I start? What do I need? Which ones are worth the time and effort and which are not? School me on this.

Fill out the FASFA (application for federal student aid) as early as possible. Even their loans are at amazing rates and they give out quite a lot of grants as well.

As for scholarships, do you have the good fortune to be a minority or a woman? That helps out loads. If not look around for merit based scholarships and perhaps ones related to a field you are interested in (eg: engineering scholarships, or NASA grants or something).

BTW: I know nothing about you so don't take this the wrong way. Be extra careful, especially around your senior year (graduation, prom etc...) about booze and drugs. Having a drug offense, even if it's something really minor that no sane society should criminalize, basicially completely screws you out of any chance of federal student aid.

Check out the student services office at your school. I don't know how it works wherever you are, but when I was in tech school they had a single general form to apply for almost all of the scholarships in one shot.

Also, make sure to check out the big businesses in your area, such as power companies and telcos, as they generally have some sort of a program in place. I had over $20,000 given to me in two years for filling out two forms :P.

    Good luck!
