I just got my Xbox to my new place, I have a HT-506 Receiver(onkyo) which apparently just switches the HDMI signal.
anyway, i guess what i have to do is take the 360, put the HDMI from the 360 directly into the TV, then i guess i need to take that short cord that comes with the elite with the optical out and plug that in above the HDMI out. I did this, plugged it in to the same place that my PS3 audio is plugged in, problem im having is that i cant figure out how to make the 360 output the video to the TV and the audio to the Receiver. so im still not getting surround sound as its going through the HDMI instead of the optical out.
ive looked on the 360 website and did not understand what it was telling me to do.
is this just not possible? i'd like to do it this way so i can have 1080p video (its a 50in screen, so it does make a difference) but still have HD sound as well.
AFAIK there is no way to turn off the audio going to the TV via HDMI...you'll just need to mute the TV. But other than that it sounds like it's setup correctly. My receiver doesn't handle HDMI so I have the HDMI going straight to the TV and have optical going from the Xbox audio dongle to my receiver. I don't recall having to change any settings on the Xbox, but go into Settings (far right of the new menu) and look for Audio or Sound options. You should be able to set it to output Dolby Digital. If it's already set that way...dunno what to tell you.
Your TV should have an option to not play sound coming through HDMI. I have a setup very similiar to yours, except both cables are going through the receiver. You can always run an optical cable from your TV to the receiver instead, but most TVs do not support full 5.1 sound.
If you plug the HDMI into your TV and the optical into the receiver (both coming from the 360), you just need to make sure each of them is on the correct input. I don't recall if the 360 has an option to specify which audio out to use (HDMI or Optical), but if it doesn't, it's probably outputting on both.
