My only questions: Faction leaders: what the Heck. I lost a siege defense against Queen something or other, who took an absolutely stupid number of people down, and I could barely dent her.
And is there ever a better way to get replacement troops? Getting 0-6 recruits per village once a week makes recovering an army the most annoying part of this otherwise amazing game.
Faction leaders were significantly beefed up in NE, rightfully so in my opinion. It makes them something to be feared.
And do tasks for the village elders. The number of recruits you get is dependent on luck and your relationship with that village.
Hey, what the heck am I supposed to do with captured lords? Ransom brokers don't want them. If I talk to them I just warn them not to try escaping.
Sometimes your king wants them (though I haven't had it happen yet). If not, just keep them, and eventually a message will pop up stating that the family wants to pay the ransom. It can take a long time, though.

Eventually their kingdom will offer you a ransom for them. Also sometimes a friendly lord will offer a quest to give him a lord for a hostage exhange.
If their kingdom gets wiped out though I don't think there's anything. I guess you can visit them in your dungeon and imagine what a torture minigame would be like.

So, I downloaded the demo for this last night, and I am terrible at all things combat. Are there any tips or tricks to make it a little easier/rewarding?
When fighting on foot, keep your distance til the other guy swings then go in. After every hit, you'll knock him off balance, so keep hitting so he doesn't get a chance to hit back. When outnumbered or outmatched (like when tournaments give you a bow to fight off 4 meleers...) keep backing up and swinging or shooting, so only one or two of them will be in range of you at a time. When a tournament has you on foot against a horseman, stick in a corner, the AI is really bad about riding into walls, and you'll be able to kill him or his horse while he's stopped.
I've found the key for sieging castles is don't die. This seems obvious, but it can really mess things up. When you go back in for a 2nd try, you need to breach the wall all over again, and that's the most fatal part of the excersize. Once you've cleared the wall of archers, stay back and do some archery of your own (you can probably pick up more ammo from the defenders bodies). And if you get to 5-10% hp or less, try not to even show your face lest it get sniped. It's better to let your troops do the fighting without you than have to break in again.
Learn to ride your pony, and ride it well. Mounted combat is actually very well done. Just keep in mind that the angle you swing at is linked to your camera. If you want to slice someone at shoulder height, look down at them.

Thanks for the tips guys! I've been too scared to try a castle seige yet (I only have 14 dudes) and the one villiage I tried to pillage just dragged me off my horse and beat me senseless.
I've tried to learn mounted combat, but I either release too early or too late. Except for this morning before work, I hacked a guy in the face with a falchion. That was just downright enjoyable.
Damn I can't wait to get the full version of this freaking game.

Man, I've avoided doing anything for them because the tasks always suck. Getting cattle for ANYONE sucks.
Any task involving bandits is fun. Cattle suck though.
For horse fighting, don't get caught in the middle of the mob, you won't be able to swing effectively, plus you'll be an easy target. Ride around the edge of the mob and take em one at a time. Horses do charging damage too, so even if you don't think you can score a hit, just running into a line of guys can do some hurt. Also, you don't need to be charging at max speed for you to be able to lop a guy's head off. Going at half, or even quarter speed is usually enough to 1-shot a basic footman, and it'll be a lot easier to time the swing.
Edit: mostly it's just practice, when I started I would actually get off my horse before the fight since I couldn't time anything right, now I can lop off three heads in quick succession.

I think they beefed up horses in NE. Normally when I would charge through a group, I would knock a bunch down but would maybe knock out 1 or 2, if they were already pretty hurt. Last night I was knocking fresh dudes out left and right. This was on a Heavy or Spirited Charger, but it's still nice.
I think Chargers have a higher charge damage, I use a Hunter so I can catch up with those pesky horsemen that delay the end of the fight for five minutes by running around. But even with a low charge damage, I figure I'm making it a lot easier for my army to finish the job, if the other side is knocked on their ass.
I always get pissy when someone tosses a spear into my horse's head. Poor horse, walking around with a giant missile stuck out the side of his eye for the entire fight.

Yeah, I'm wondering if headshots on horses is new, or if I just never got one before. I've been seeing them with NE.
No, I had one battle in normal with a javalin sticking through the side of my horse's head.
That's actually one of my favorite parts, is watching your guys shields become chock full of arrows during a siege. Or ending a battle with half a dozen sticking out of mine. Some of this stuff is pretty impressive for such a small company.
Also, I put in a couple of the high-res texture mods yesterday, and I notice now my quiver and bow are kept around my waist instead of near my shoulders. It's not a bad thing, but I dunno what texture mod did that.

This is good advice, but I have to say so far I find that it's even more useful to just sit behind your mans as they get in a giant melee on the walls and stab people with a two hander from safety. You'll get a ton of kills and not be in any real danger as long as you pay attention to when the line is breaking up. Then you fall back, wait for reinforcements to join the fight again, and go back to what you were doing.
Also god damn it. The King of the Vaegirs just took me and my 50 men on a hellish campaign in which we took down two castles, a city, and a 300 man army on the plains all in one go. Then he makes peace with the god damn Nords! We had them on the run! They only had a city and two castles left I WANT BLOOD.
Doubly irritating, we're now at war with nobody at all. Bloooood

Keep doing tasks for the Lords. Eventually one will give you a task to start a war. You'll lose honor, but I think you're already past that stage.
Apparently not selling a lord for ransom gives negative honor, which sucks. Not putting them back in the field is a good strategic decision! No good way to get it back either, and I think it's why lords won't follow me on plans, given how high my renown is.
I didn't even realize there was another castle type than the single ladder one until Tuesday. My first castle is that style and I've fought 10+ battles there, taking it, retaking it and defending it. Its all about the bottleneck... lose it and you're dead. Keep it and there's nothing they can do at default settings.
Are there any mods that improve the AI tactics? Seriously, I'm getting tired of the mass charge, in which I get to slaughter the cavalry first cuz they the quickest to get to me.
So, for anyone who's played or is playing the Native Improved mod (and Native Expansion might very well be the same, I don't know), is there a trick to start a new character?
Because I can't seem to go anywhere or do anything without getting ganked. At least with the native M+B, you could run away from everything, picking your battles with small Looter groups until you worked your way up. But with this mod, the Looters are all replaced with groups of 25+ Mercs, and you can't outrun a vast majority of them.
I want to like this mod, I really do. The changes it makes all seem really neat. But it's difficulty ruins its accessibility...

Try to make it to a village or town if you can and wait until armies start moving around. NE also has small bands of elite units that are good at chasing off bandits.
Hey, if you join a rebellion, do you keep all your previous territories?
The war with the Vaegirs is basically done. They've been reduced to tiny raiding warbands (I seriously saw one of a Lord and 2 archers, the others aren't much better), and I need some new action. I'm thinking of leaving the Rhodaks and supporting the Swadian rebellion, but it's not worth it if I lose my cities.

hit a horse in the chest and it will rear up
Usually in games I don't like hurting/killing animals, even if they attack me.
But in M&B, horse is going down

I've gotten headshots on horses in vanilla as well as the calradia at war mod
Tales will be told for centuries how he runs alongside the cavalry to the frontline, butchering every opponent that raises his blade against him
:
edit: and Native Expansion makes the game much better with factions, unit upgrades, etc, though you will get killed at the beginning

If you have really high honor some opponents will even let you flee instead of rape you if they massively outnumber you.

Not taking the reward when you get a murderer also.
I think challenging a lord to a dual for a lady also

For the Native mods, do you need to get Native Expansion first and then Native Improvement? Or just one or the other?
