I was just out at my local arcade, and when I got back to my car and turned it on, it idled HARD, like it was trying to give birth or something. I put it in neutral to no avail, and R/D were the same story.
I was like "well fuck this" and turned it off to go clean snow off. I got back in and it still idled hard. I figured I'd just drive home (a few blocks) and bring it to a shop tomorrow. It got back to normal during the trip, but I'm a little freaked.
I just got my oil changed yesterday, and my transmission a few months back. Should I bring it in anyway? What do I tell them? Any theories?
I'd love to be the one disappoint you when I don't fall down
I think "idling" was the wrong word to use, since it was the same in motion and at a stop in any 'gear'. After a few blocks it just went back to normal.
In neutral the first time it was idling at over 1.5k rpm, whereas it's normally at about .6k rpm. In motion it was obviously harder to tell since the rpm was all over the place, but never below 1.5k until it settled down.

Did the oil change include a coolant change as well (as is common)? If they filled it but left a bubble in the system it will behave like that. Similarly, if your coolant is freezing it will also cause problems.

He had a look at I guess decided it was fine, can opening it up cause a bubble too?
I would say have your engine mounts looked at. Also your idle pulley for the A/C compressor might be broke.
I've occasionally had it sound a little rough when I come back to having left the ac in the on position even though it's not actually on since the car is off, and settle down when I turn it back to the off position. This was actually the case when this happened, but I didnt turn it off until after it settled down on its own as I was too distracted to take a look at the knob. I guess you might be on to something.
I was expecting a good, "my car is possessed by the devil" story, and this thread did not deliver. Hmph .
Yeah a whole Christine thing.
Also, how cold is it outside? You say that it idled at 1600RPM instead of the normal 600. Did you give the engine time to warm up?
It was no colder then any regular day here in Canada, and the car had been used a few hours prior with no problem. I've seen/heard it idle harder then it should when it's cold, and this was not it. The car actually shook a little iirc.

Update: It looks like the idle RPM was just a coincidence.
I turned on the AC earlier to clear up my windows, and the problem came back, only to vanish as soon as I turned it back off, with repeated results after another attempt. Looks like ThePain73 was on to something after all. I'm just glad it's not directly engine related and won't be making my car undrivable.
edit: the rpm did fluctuate a bit while stopped and toying with the AC, but at the regular < 1k RPM. I guess it's not entirely a coincidence.
Thanks for the help guys, I'll be taking it to the shop at my earliest convenience.

Don't listen to me or anything... I just work in a dealership.

Okay so we won't.
I kid.
It sounds to me like antifreeze. Check to see if they did your coolant too.

I've had it idle at about 1ish while it's warming up, but it still sounds fine when that happens and that was not what happened here.

Sorry? =p

I'm curious to know why you think either of these problems would cause a high idle speed.
