Some really cool moments there, notably the chessboard. Unfortunately, it can't be verified if it was all done in one take or not, and the end left something to be desired.

Water is a chemical oddity because the solid form floats on the liquid form, and if it didn't life on this planet couldn't exist.

What's the reasoning behind that again? Ice would sink and then stay cold so the oceans would just be solid?

I do not think it to have been done in one take, but it was still the most elaborate Goldberg I've ever seen.

Yes, frozen water (ice) would sink if it was denser than liquid water and freeze oceans/lakes/ponds/etc from the bottom up, thus stopping life from doing its thing.

The chessboard is probably using magnets. It looks like those strings on the side are pulling, probably moving the magnets under the board.

seems to me that the srtings themselves are pulling the pieces in sequence, possibly through grooves in the board?

you can totally see a string or a groove following the diagonal line that the bishop moves
