So ever since my girlfriend went back to college I have had a lot more time to be lonely and play videogames, and have thusly been exploring through all the old isometric RPGs I missed out on
Right now I'm playing fallout, fallout 2, and baldur's gate II, this is my first time with the latter
Fallout is a computer role-playing game produced by Tim Cain, developed by Black Isle Studios (though before the studio was named "Black Isle") and published by Interplay in 1997. The game has a post-apocalyptic setting in the late 22nd century, though its story and artwork are heavily influenced by the post-World War II nuclear paranoia of the 1950s.
The game is sometimes considered to be an unofficial sequel to Wasteland, but it could not use that title as Electronic Arts held the rights to it, and, except for minor references, the games are set in separate universes. It was also intended to use Steve Jackson Games's GURPS system, but that deal fell through due to the excessive amounts of violence and gore included in the game, forcing Black Isle to change the already implemented GURPS system to the internally developed SPECIAL system.
Critically acclaimed, the game inspired a number of sequels and spin-off games, known collectively as the Fallout series.
fallout rawks
Baldur's Gate II seems really cool, since I've never really dicked around with any of these old-school AD&D RPGs. I made a human fighter who has no skills for some reason but has some hella weapon proficiencies. It's more complicated then NWN and shit so thank god I am familiar with AD&D.
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, developed by BioWare and released September 26, 2000, is the second computer role-playing game in the Baldur's Gate series, which takes place just a few months after the events of Baldur's Gate. It is based on the 2nd edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons role-playing system. The story is set in the Forgotten Realms, the most popular D&D story setting. It has sold over 2,000,000 units and is widely regarded as one of the best role-playing games of all time.[1]
An expansion pack for the game was released in 2001, entitled Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal.
this shit is pretty confusing thus far but i am totally digging it's weird RTS style hack n slashing. i am still stuck in a big gay castle thing that some jerk wizard trapped me in.
I am making this thread because I want people to talk to about these games
Posts
That said, a lot of the weirdness you are experiencing comes from the fact that the game is based on a rules set (D&D 2nd edition) that really just was executed horribly. If you have any general questions it'd be good to ask here, unless you have somehow found a copy with the manual, in which case you should probably at least glance through it, I know I wish I had.
Luckily I started playing D&D with second edition so it's not that confusing. and as for the having trouble getting into it, I'm actually having a really easy time because I am all "man that looks pretty" after playing fallout 2 for days
Do formations and shit really matter? should my ranger guy be using a bow? should i stack one proficiency or go for axes/longswords/two handed swords like i was planning?
nope, but planescape is next on my list since I have heard it is virtually a novel gameified and that sounds fantastic
Also, the Planescape setting was rarely used in my house. I ran a few campaigns back in the day but that's it.
Planescape is the best game to play so long after release because of the patches. Widescreen/high res, added quests and storylines back in that were unfinished. Man. Now I want to play Planescape again. Really the best story of any game, ever.
Also, no story whatsoever, but the Icewind Dale series is basically a D&D setting tactical combat game.
im surprised i havent done this yet in fallout
I wouldn't change a thing about Planescape. I just don't put it in the same boat as the other D&D based games.
I think I'm going to install all my old isometric RPGs on my laptop so I'll have something to do at the laundromat other than watch Audrey Hepburn movies. The only problem is getting a bunch of Windows 9x games to work on Vista. Hurgh.
Edit: Dabble, Arcanum is pretty much fixed these days. Check out the downloads section at http://www.terra-arcanum.com and download the unofficial patch.
And now they are making a Star Wars MMO. I am so fucked.
Rangers should use bows. Stacking proficiency is useful, but going jack of all trades isn't that bad either.
Formations are actually really important. Keeping squishies in the middle or in the back make a HUGE difference in alot of dungeon exploring and such.
I started BG2 but for whatever reason (probably a series of formats and school) never got anywhere with it. That is on the top of my "list" for things I plan on doing.
That and playing the heck out of Emperor Battle for Dune and Grim Fandango.
still working on it, but i don't know where to find the last seasons
Yeah, that's sorta what inspired me to make this thread. the first FALLOUT thread we had was so much fun and it taught me that games like this aren't so much boring as they are deep and then suddenly i realized I could enjoy non fps games!

Irenicus? Holy shit Irenicus is perfect.
Look above the logo. If that's hair then this guy is a conehead.
There's also the Ultima series. I know I keep pimping these LPs but Nakar of SA did the fucking best LPs of Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle:
