A moderate earthquake occurred at 7:49:46 PM (PST) on Thursday, January 8, 2009.
The magnitude 5.0 event occurred 2 km (1 miles) S of San Bernardino, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 14 km ( 9 miles).
Living in California was awesome. All earthquakes errywhere.
You always knew when there had been like a two or three pointer during the night when you wake up and everything on your desk has moved around an inch or two.
But the really big ones don't come around so often
and I was woken up by a 5.5 freak earthquake in the UK and actually it wasn't scary at all so that has calmed my fears
Nothing was even damaged (although a poor boy in the next city over had his pelvis crushed when the chimney fell in on him as a result of the quaking)
I've lived here 19 out of the 21 years of my life and there's been one big earthquake, and even then it wasn't bad. You really don't have much to worry about.
There was a fucking earthquake? I thought my cocker spaniel was walking under my computer chair.

The only real danger is that something will fall on you
But you should have enough time to get out of the way
Buildings very rarely collapse in California
In fact, it almost never happens

Well, for a start I presume architects and builders here know to expect earthquakes and design buildings accordingly
Also, yeah, most surburban houses are only one storey high, and are made from wood
In the UK, where everything is brick and at least two storeys high, the damage was a lot more significant
Posts

Just one jolt

It didn't feel like just one jolt to me though. Lots of rolling and rocking.

to an extent, wooden buildings can flex with the movement, but brick buildings are really bad.
