Big explosions

So the Pepcon explosion, which was the biggest non-nuclear non-natural explosion, was 1 kiloton and registered 3.5 on the richter scale. It injured thousands in Las Vegas back in 1988. The first explosion is big, but it's not that, wait til about 2:20 seconds in.

I think this thread should be for things that go boom.

This is from that explosion in Toronto last year, I think Dread Pirate Arbuthnot made a thread about it actually. It's pretty damn crazy, you can even see the shockwave!

I know, it's fantastic. I'm just relieved nobody died in this explosion (I think) so I don't feel as bad for laughing and being all DAAAAAAAAAYUM whenever I watch it.

A veteran firefighter died of a heart attack shortly after the explosion.

Thread reminded me of a comparatively smaller explosion that happened near here a couple years back in Danvers when a chemical plant blew up. Couldn't find any particularly good video footage of it occurring, mostly just the fire afterwards.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11Ej7OJ-beo

And an overhead of the aftermath.

Testing an A-10 Thunderbolt (the "warthog") GAU-8 Avenger cannon outside of the fuselage of the plane...

not exactly an explosion, but impressive none the less.

In interviews with Iraqi POW's the A-10 is often cited as one of the main points of fear. (in part to the A-10's main role as close air support, most other attacking planes are out of visual range, but its a scary fucking plane nonetheless.)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sALiuWg_I1k

and random note, the A-10 is the only plane that collects its brass.

    explosions are the best.

i got to fire various mortars and the best one was the 120mm. when the round goes out of the tube it will shatter your eardrums if you're nearby and not wearing earplugs.

we also got to go downrange and watch 120mm rounds impact. we were about a mile away and the shockwave from the blasts shook the small building we were in.

My friend just got out of Iraq. While he was over there he used to play around with a Mk 19.

Those things are intimidating as fuck for being a relatively small-bore weapon.

the mk19 is pretty cool. i got to go through a couple boxes of ammo for it but the detonation just leaves something to be desired.

The creation of the Tsar Bomba was just such an intensely Soviet response.

"Well, our guidance systems aren't as good as the Americans so we're just gonna make our nukes bigger so if we miss our target by a little it won't really matter."

You gotta love those crazy Russians sometimes.

Has someone posted that video of an IED buried under the road in Iraq where the sand kind of stays together and the humvee swerves to the right? That is cool.

One of my favourite documentaries ever is that one about nuclear weapons that Shatner narrates, it's pretty much just 2 hours of huge ass mushroom clouds. So impressive.
