Hmm...good list. I would have liked to seen Soul Calibur 4 a bit higher and Tales of Vesperia too...but looking at the top 50, there were a lot of good games out this year so it is understandable.
A bit saddened to see L4D and Dead Space so high, but at least they aren't #1.
Unlike you I'm very glad to see Dead Space and L4D so high up. (lately, every night I make a touch choice between them and usually end up playing both and stay up far too late) Yay for new IP. (Also glad to see VC in a respectable 15th) Though I'm not sure why everyone is raving about Fallout 3 though. I'm not too far in and its kinda neat, but I haven't found the magic yet. So far it feels more like oblivion than fallout.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I'm really surprised to see Fallout 3 at #1, I'd always thought that Bethesda games were pretty niche. It's great though, definitely the best game I've played in a long time. Here's hoping for a better year for the Wii in 2009.

I think it's a lot more accessible than any of their other games. The SPECIAL system and the skills system are a lot easier to understand and deal with than what they did for Oblivion.

Bethesda games are big, even by general standards, not just RPG standards. Fallout 3 even has TV ads.

Well, we tried guys
At least we got Cult Hit though
That is a victory in itself
But what the fuck, people? Burnout Paradise (my #3) at 27?
For every person who loved Burnout Paradise, there was another person like me who thought it was a lot less fun than Burnout Revenge. But hey, it could have been worse. None of my top 3 did as well as they should have (Civ Revolution, Persona 4, and N+).
This is a pleasing list. I am surprised by Brawl's strong showing.
edit - though I disagree with TWEWY's placement. It was better than Brawl, come on.
Also. MAN, did Spore completely fall out of everybody's collective consciousness after a few weeks. Like an anvil into the ocean. This was the game that was supposed to last forever. Spore was more successful as hype than it was as reality. Yet, it wasn't a bad game! At all! I own it, I think it's quite good.
I knew Fallout 3 would place well, but first? We rented it and never really were wowed by it--a few gameplay bugs ended up forcing us to put it down about halfway through.
When you put it that way, it's pretty clear why it won: it's bioshock mk 2! :P

No, its not an 8 hour game with a horrible ending and no semblance of challenge.
Its a 100+ hour game with a horrible ending and no semblance of challenge
Seriously, though, I voted Fallout 3 for number 1. Hells yeah. My second vote also placed in the top 20. (wrath).

What I thought was weird that was that
1. Despite being down at #27, Burnout Paradise was the top-rated sports game of any kind.
2. This is the second year in a row that a racing game has gotten #27 exactly and still been the top-rated sports game of any kind.
Yeah I hardly consider MMOs eligible, the only rationale being that they come off more like a subscription service than a game to a lot of us. We're almost more likely to compare them to a Napster account or X-Box Live Gold. (This is from me, and I played DAoC for 5 years, so I'm not trying to stomp on MMOs or people who like them.)
GameFAQs even had a "best games of 2008" poll, several categories of which included games with only an expansion in 2008, and I think should have been adjusted accordingly. They bothered having a "best remake category", so I don't see why they tried to integrate expansions to count as 2008 game releases.
So in brief, I think Age of Conan or Warhammer really ought to go exclusively against other MMOs since a lot of us won't consider them in the same way as titles like GTA4 or Fallout 3.
Edit: thanks to OP for this little project, it was fun.
Wow. Lord of the Rings Online: Mines of Moria, came in at a disappointing 120th, while Age of Conan managed to get 96th. Thats just saddening.
Are you disappointed that both are so low, or that Age of Conan is higher than LOTR?
That Age of Conan managed to place higher than LOTRO's excellent expansion. I never expected Mines of Moria to place very high, as any MMO that isn't WoW isn't going to, but it still should have been higher than Conan.

I hate when people say Bioshock has no challenge, because I am absolutely awful at the game. Yeah, I know I can just keep coming back to life and that's why everyone says there is no challenge, but when it takes me five or six lives to kill one Big Daddy, I feel like that's challenging. For the record I am abysmal at FPS games.
I don't know how I feel about GTA IV being ranked so high. I got it at launch, played the hell out of it, finished it, loved it, and never touched it again. Don't get me wrong, I think it was great, but I think that were plenty of better games last year.

Honestly, Big Daddies were rather difficult to take down at first, but once you get the Stealth plasmids and the Crossbow, I found the game to become ridiculously easy. Also with the right plasmids, I once wrenched a Big Daddy to death. One of these days I'm going to play it again on Hard and with respawning turned off that they patched in as an option later. The game was awesome even with it being easy, but that should make a 2nd playthrough a lot more fun for me.
Well, that may be the problem for me. I only got to Fontaine's Fisheries so I've been fighting those suckers with telekinesis and incinerate (I think, I haven't played since November).
Also, while I was somewhat aggravated/let down by the most recent Fallout (and Bioshock) offerings, nothing let me down as much as the ending of Gears of War 2. My roomate and I finished that thing in seconds, and then just sort of sat there in shock as the credits rolled. I'm very glad that was a rental.

And Fallout 3, of course. So many great games this year, I wish I could have voted for more.
Thanks for running this again, mcc.
Yeah, I hate it when good games are appreciated too.
Very well balanced list imo

I thought the game was butt ugly as well. You're not as alone as you think you are.
And I played it, so its not a "looks better in motion" thing. But I guess for some people (different from other games) + (detailed) = (beautiful).

No not really.
Sins came out in February. Audiosurf too.
GTAIV was in April.
The spread is fine, there is no fall release bias. The games released in fall were just good.

??
My wife voted it her #1 game... she was the only one :O

Seriously, anyone who enjoyed Burnout 3 will enjoy this game
Very happy how Burnout Paradise (#27), Dead Space (#6) and especially Iji(#73!!) ranked. Great year of gaming once again guys and gals
Now I kind of have to wonder who the other poor soul was that voted Lost Odyssey at #1.
Still, 44th is plenty respectable in a year of such gargantuan releases.

Could you do me a favour and fix the typo in it though (which I only just noticed from reading it in your sig)
