Besides this, I'm curious as to what your general opinion of this Poll's results were, Scarab.
I ask because I think you have good taste.
My personal game of the year was split between Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3. I think they both delivered entirely on what they set out to accomplish and great games always do that.
The poll results here represent I think a much more eclectic taste in games than, say, over at IGN or NeoGAF.
I think it is also interesting that 8 out of the top 10 games can be found on 360, but that the next 10 is a much broader range, from PC to Wii to DS.
Which I guess you could interpret as meaning that the majority of PA forumers have a 360 and a favourite two or three 360 games, and then filled in the rest of their poll form with other noteworthy mentionables.
It also shows that unlike say a critic based game of the year award, a lot of the top games here have strong communities that would have collectively voted for them. There have been half a dozen L4D threads already, the Fallout one was huge and I know that the Brawl one lasted ages. You get a very condensed approach to awarding games of the year.
Also, I'm glad to see a kind of Usual Suspects list of games that are cropping up in all GOTY lists but not winning much. Dead Space is a good example, I think it is a case of everyone enjoyed it but noone loved it. It is a very polished and fun game. So too is MGS4, but again I think it is one of those games that the fans voted for but noone else did.
I remember when the PA forums used to have a Nintendo bias, or at least have a history of such opinions which gave it that as some kind of meme. But now I think it is clear there is a core of 360 and PC owners which are out in force for these things. And while I have no doubt there are plenty of Wii owners you don't get the sense that there is much to revolve around, other than Brawl and NMH (neither of which I voted for, but that's just my taste I think they are good just not for me)
All in all was Fallout deserving of the win? I'd say yes. Even more so when you consider the flak from diehard Fallout fans it had to endure and months and months of Oblivion with guns bullshit.
GTA4 has had a lot of backlash in recent months, especially when outlets have started handing it out the majority of GOTY awards. I disagree, I think it is an excellent game its just that it came out so long ago (in gaming terms) that we are now in some kind of Grand Theft Refractory period. It was good, very good and I think would have been higher had it launched in October instead.
Any omissions I would have liked to see? Well being a die hard PC gamer would have loved to see Colonization get some love, but as I said in the pre-voting thread - I dont mind it being missed off entirely especially as like 3 people bought it.
Sins being no 20 I think is fair. For such a hardcore game with a small fanbase it certainly got some love. Would have liked to have seen it higher and I think in the coming months the community here will only continue to grow with the expansion but thats not too shabby.
Where was Spore? The so called game of the century that had three years of e3 best of show under its belt was for me the biggest let down of the year. More than Too Human (lol) and perhaps Prince of Persia (which I enjoyed a lot mind you)
Spore was suposed to be the next Sims, and got placed 33 with noone giving it no 1 spot. To me that says it got thrown on a lot of lists to fill up the numbers.
No Farcry 2 anywhere either. Criminally underlooked game last year, maybe it will teach Ubi not to cram stuff into the fall release schedule.
Looking forward to 2009? Well what is going to be huge this year, or more importantly are there games not yet announced that will show? Call of Duty 5 almost certaily will show its head. If IW pull the same thing we will see it announced, beta tested and shipped within 6 months like COD4. Assassin's Creed 2 I expect to be out this fall. That hopefully will be huge.
Mass Effect 2 should be coming out this fall too. That will place very high on voting here, we have a huge ME community (with a thread still on the front page over a year from release - for a single player RPG that is incredible)
I think the dark horse surprise of the year (aka the Dead Space trophy) might be Uncharted 2. Now I know the first one got a ton of love here and elsewhere and a lot of people dismissed it as reflected support for the platform. But now the console is no longer riding on that one game and it can really stand alone. I cant wait for it, definitely out this year too.
All in all, when you look back at 2008 and 2007 the quality of games released has jumped considerably on all platforms across the board. The projects that were just dreams when the generation started are now beginning to ship. I think with gaming increasing in profitability and revenue year on year it is good to be a gamer.
If we are ready to start calling contenders for games of 2009, I have a file saved on my desktop called "games of 2009.txt"
Heavy Rain
MadWorld
Prototype
Love
Subversion
Beyond Good & Evil 2
The Crossing
Alpha Protocol
Splinter Cell 5
Flower
Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
Deus Ex 3
Aliens Colonial Marines
Brutal Legend
Fez
Sin & Punishment 2
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Although that is just games I am looking forwards to, not all the big games, and I am adding to it all the time.
I'm not sure how I feel about RE5. I've spent a bunch of time with the demo, and I think more than anything I have been spoiled by the RE Wii edition controls. Since it is basically RE4-2, going back to the old set up feels really sluggish (much like playing RE4 on the Gamecube now would). Plus I resent how they aren't doing much to move the series forwards, and reusing so much stuff from RE4 is lazy.
I haven't got around to playing the first Skate yet, although I really want to.
I'm not sure about SF4. I think SF2HD is enough for me (although I have played it a fair bit, my 360 red ringed before I could buy it myself).
Not played to much of brawl...I don't think I voted for it, if I did it was low down.
I totally want to play skate, they fact is there is like 10/15 big games for the 360 I already own that I am yet to really sink in. Then RROD + Dissertation means I know I am not going to play it for a while. I will pick it up at some point for sure.
Yay for Castle Crashers. I wasn't sure if it would make top 20 or not. I didn't play near enough games this past year, stupid slow gamefly. I was sad that Fifa 09 wasn't on the list
No Prince of Persia in the top 20? You people disgust me.
I'm greatly enjoying this game but ironically this stupid-ass sluice gate raising...challenge thing is pissing me the fuck off
Seirously Ubisoft why'd you have to ruin an otherwise enjoyable game with this stupid goddamn puzzle
...My only question is why the fuck did so many people vote for you have to burn the rope?
What happened with me was that I haven't played 20 games this year, so every game I did play got onto my list. YHtBtR was at the bottom. I'd guess that a lot of others did the same thing.

Take note
Oh well, here is to skate 2's winning year!
At least Sins made the list.
Also, high-five to the 29 other people that also voted The World Ends With You as your top game. Best DS game this year, by far!

You have to vote for you have to burn the rope.
No seriously I don't know. I wasn't as entranced by it as everyone else.
I don't understand this thing at all.
You have to burn the rope.
