Problems with my ethernet internet network, computer to latop.

Long story short, I just reformatted my sisters Inspirion 6400 DELL laptop after a virus problem, my first time in reformatting. She is running on Windows XP. Since then I have installed service pack 3, audio driver, graphics driver, necessary drivers for the touchpad etc, wireless network drivers, DSS drivers and chipset drivers, from the DELL website.

But here is the problem; she has been using the internet through an Ethernet cable that leads from my XP desktop and that was working fine up until this reformat. I have set up the usual networks and attempted all I can to get the internet running, all it is doing at present is recognising the Ethernet cable is plugged in, but no internet is being received on her latop.

I tried repairing the network, but it had an error message which read
"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following TCP/ICP is not enabled for this connection. Cannot proceed"

I have noticed in the Device Manager there are some other devices that have big yellow question marks next to them.
- Ethernet Controller
- Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus
- SM Bus Controller
Are these drivers that still need to be installed?

I really would love some help with this, any advice given would be highly appreciated! If you need further computer/her latop specs details they can be given.

you just have to reinstall your ethernet driver

should be on the same disc as the rest of your motherboards drivers

What form of ethernet connection are you using? Are you hooked up through a school's network, a router, or directly into a modem? If a modem what type of connection is it, a cable or a dsl one?

That, or get the ethernet driver by going to the Dell website and entering your service tag in the drivers section. Then, transfer via USB.

he said ethernet that runs from his computer

which reminds me, after you install the drivers you may have to change some settings on your computer, though if it was doing it preformat you shouldn't

I have gone through most of the drivers via the DELL website, but when it comes to the drivers concerning the remaining ones I mentioned in my device manager, I'm unsure of which ones I need to download. As none of them suggest that they are related to Ethernet, just wireless drivers.

Good news is, I just tried directly plugging my modem into the laptop (Forgetting the Ethernet wire that leads from my desktop) and the net is running. Is it worth just buying a router in this case? Or do I still need Ethernet drivers to get that working too?

Ok, just found some other things on the DELL drivers website to download, which leaves my Device Manager with two drivers, but none of the others apply to them.

    - Ethernet Controller
    - SM Bus Controller
