I'm going to post mp3 versions of everything I've done so far on my blog either tomorrow or Monday. The next video that ought to be posted is Killer Queen, but it really is not that great. Songs that have varying tempos (or change time signatures, like Killer Queen does -- it has a few parts where it switches from 4/4 to 2/4 for a measure) don't get processed very well. So we'll see.
If you guys have any ideas as for what might make a good Songsmithization, just assume for hypothesis that I have vocal tracks to any song that appears in the game Rock Band.

I'd love to hear a Billy Idol song. Maybe white wedding or rebel yell as they are the best known (i think).

Sadly, those songs are "covers" in Rock Band -- the original vocals aren't there.

"Just what I needed" turned into a ballad made me wonder what one of the Nine Inch Nails songs would sound like given the same treatment. Capital G would probably work the best and might make an interesting ballad. The vocals are mostly clean and the beat is consistent across the entirety of the song.
TOTP edit: Kudos to everyone in this thread- I can't believe such a lame idea and terrible marketing video has spawned something so immensely entertaining.
Sponk, you seem to be missing the fact that the marketing video was fuckawesome.
One man's trash is another man's treasure, I suppose.
I wonder what would happen if you could take the audio from the video and put it back into Songsmith. Would come out the same? I really need to download it and give it a try.

The problem is that you don't (I assume) have access to the vocal-only track of the commercial, meaning that your input would have all the background noise and drum track and such.

The marketing video may have been (very entertaining) lame, but the idea itself was never, ever lame.

Yeah, I realize that. I was mostly thinking out loud. I just installed songsmith and can't make much of anything sound decent, even if I try to imitate the songs in the video. I think they had to do quite a bit of tweaking just to make the songs for the video. It's not quite as easy as the video would have you believe.
Playing around with it just a little bit earlier in the evening I was getting better results. The default chord progressions pretty much never fit with anything I was trying to sing but I did get some decent results with a borrowed melody...
attempt 1 (only fixed the chord progression) attempt 2 (tweaked the backing instruments as well)
The second attempt is much closer to what they were passing as the immediate result of the program.
So I stand corrected. It is a deeper program than it appears at first glance. Will it have any major effect on the music business (or even commercial jingle business)? Highly unlikely.
I am doing an interview tomorrow with the Times of London. This whole thing is... bizarre.
Ok, an email from microsoft I can understand, but that's a bit nuts. Good luck with the interview Find out what day it is going to be in (if you can) and i'll try and pick up a copy.
Still waiting to hear when the Times article is going to appear, but there was a big article that went up on Pitchfork last night about it. A few ten-thousands-of-hits later, I'm now on the top-viewed list for 14 countries... hahaha.

I put up the newspaper article on my blog for those who are interested. I spoke to Sumit Basu, one of the two main researchers behind the product. He's also a musician who uses the software to help in his song writing.
Yeah, I'm quite amateur in my opinions, and most of what I wrote was rather snobbish. My brother's stuff is actually a hell of a lot more considered than mine.

Is it a fun diversion for a little bit? Sure.

Haha, your a pioneer of the procedurally generated music scene. Make sure you get a copy of the article for us.

Edit: Not the Times article mentioned above. The one I was talking about a few pages earlier.
Yup.
Indeed it is. I just needed someone "in a band" for their view on the software, and PA is always a great place to look for such specialized sources.
For a more "super professional musician" source, Hepner has toured with quite a few big names and worked in "the business" for years.
He has quite an impressive bio.
I was thinking, "What does a smaller band/musician think of this software?" and then, "What does someone more classically trained think?"

That's a very impressive bio (plus I like saxophonists
Oh, God, LewieP, what have you done?
