What're some decent Mac titles?

FandyienFandyien But Otto, what about us? Registered User regular
edited January 2009 in Games and Technology
So after six years of exclusively using my PC for gaming, it's finally kicked the bucket and I'm stuck with my little MacBook.

My question is, what are some decent games I could acquire for this? I already have all the blizzard titles kicking around.

I'm not really familiar with bootcamp and I suspect this thing isn't powerful enough to run most of my pc titles.

In general, it's not worth playing the Mac ports of modern games. Most games just use some middleware to run the PC version, giving you a shitty all-around experience. Pony up for Windows, install it and play your games there.

yeah that's wrong, plenty of new apps are native clients

Bootcamp couldn't be easier, so don't even give it a second thought. If you had a gaming PC, you have a valid Windows license, so that's all set. Now which Macbook do you have. The old plastic one with Intel integrated graphics or the new metal one with the GeForce 9400M?

You'd be surprised. I'm pretty sure the Mac version of City of Heroes actually runs *better* frame-rate wise than the Windows version, probably due to better driver support.

Back to the OP, though, what game genres are you looking for?

World of Goo has a Mac client. If you don't have that game otherwise, grab it on Mac.

All new games published by EA, Ubisoft, or THQ use middleware. I think that covers enough to say "most".

Alpha Centauri came out for macs right? It's a brilliant game, it's like the Civilization series (same developer) but a Sci-Fi.

World of Goo is on the Mac, but you'll be wanting a mouse for sure. Probably one of the best games of last year, a really fun puzzle game.

N is an excellent platformer (It's a shame there is not a PC/Mac version of N+, the console sequel)

All of Introversion's games are available on Macs, the most recent being the multiplayer centric RTSish action game Multiwinia (it is excellent), and all of their other games are great too. IIRC, tney all have demos.

Lot's of people have said good things about Aquaria, although I've not gotten around to playing it myself, it's an underwater 2D metroidvania.

Or, if you prefer, there is a thread here for the new quake game beta (based on Quake 3), I assume the beta is mac compatible, but if not, the full version is planned too.

You'll need an invite, but it looks like they are giving them out pretty fast now.

Unfortunately, I have a plastic one with integrated graphics. It ran WoW okay on low-medium when I tried that once.

    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Thanks for the suggestions thus far. I'm looking for pretty much any genre of game, honestly, so long as it's good.

If you're looking for RPG's, I'd check out Spiderweb's line. They're a bit "classic" looking (the games are mostly done by one person), but they're huge and awesome.

There's also free Marathon via Aleph One. You might be able to get the originals working without it but it would probably be cooler to use it.

I think there are mac source ports for doom and quake 1 & 2.

I'm pretty sure it did. Probably version 1.0, since 2.0's the current one and it's OS X native.

In regards to Quake 1 and 2, you would be correct. Naturally, though, you need to supply the data files yourself.

EDIT: Regarding a comment higher in the thread, here *is* a Mac version of Alpha Centauri, but good luck finding a copy since it's long out-of-print. (There's copies on Amazon starting at $84.) But if you can, there's a OS X patch floating around. Havn't checked to see how it's running lately, though.

Civilization 4 and its expansions have Mac releases. That's a few years of your free time gone, right there. I am waiting for them through Goozex, myself. In general, while gaming on Mac is still a crapshoot, I tend to wind up surprised at what's available more often than not.

I enjoyed Neverwinter Nights on my Mac. But the real issue at hand is if you want to pay to build a whole new Mac game library, or just pick up a throwaway PC and play your Windows titles. I'm mostly a console gamer these days, so much of my computer library is older, but when faced with a similar dilemma I ended up just picking up a $400 last-gen PC over buying a dozen or so Mac games.

Hmm, I'd spring for a copy of Alpha Centauri if I were you (assuming it can be found) - I spent god knows how many hours on that back in the day.

Edit - Amazon US has this fo $85 USD for the core AC game, then about the same for the expansion - although I may be reading that wrong as $170 is a lot to pay even for a great game

Anyone notice how some things (mattresses and the copy machines in Highrise) are totally impenetrable? A steel wall, yeah that makes sense, but bullets should obliterate copy machines.

I don't know about you, but I always buy a bullet proof printer. Its a lot more expensive, but I think the advantages are apparent.

Seeing as how it has major engine upgrades and built in multiplayer. And is designed for a modern Mac OS.

    I have it.

It's passable in Mac OS, lost of weird texture pop in, generally decreased performance. I initially installed it on Mac OS, got tired of it, and tried it in boot camp. 100x better.
