Computer + Internet Help

My problem is a long and strenuous one, one that is really annoying to me personally, and I think I should have came to you earlier!

It started when I couldn't get on the internet. I had just gotten a USB based wireless adapter, so I put it in, got the drivers for it on a different computer, burned them to a CD, and put them on the computer with the adapter.

At first, it didn't work, which was to be expected. I'm always having networking issues, so I tried working it out. I put the IP information in manually (into Local Area Connection 3) and still couldn't get the internet up and running. I was, however, able to access my IP address website or whatever you call it - the thing you get when you type the IP address your accessing into the browser. This struck me as odd.

So I tried to make various kinds of connections (keep in mind I had just put Windows 2000 Professional on, which is pretty foreign to an XP user like myself), and eventually got to one that required me to restart before proceeding. So I did, and when I restarted the computer, I couldn't get on. The screen was the normal log on screen (which I normally bypass since I'm the only user), except it had a box that I could mark that said "Log on using dial-up connection" next to it. It had the buttons "Ok", "Cancel" (which is unclickable), "Shutdown", and "Options < <" (which just removes options).

I've tried restarting the computer in as many modes as I could (safe mode, etc) by pressing F8 at startup, but I am still locked in.

I really need help dudes and ladies.

Can't you just type whatever username and password, thus creating it? I think you could do that under Win98...

No. I think the problem here is that I can't connect to the internet, which is inconvenient because that's why I got into all this trouble in the first place. And of course I can't remember what kind of a connection I was trying to make. I'm really kind of lost.

I don't understand what the problem is. It sounds like you're at the normal login screen but the extra options are frightening you. Can't you just do your normal logon procedure? Ignore the check box. Type in your password if there is one, if not just press OK. If the username is blank try Administrator (unless you setup your own username).

As for the internet issue, when you say you can connect to IP addresses in the web browser... is that your router or an actual website? If it's an actual website then your DNS isn't configured right. Try using 4.2.2.2 or one of the www.opendns.com servers for your DNS servers (in the same dialog where you configure your IP address etc).

Yeah, could you articulate a bit more?

I can't visualize the problem in my head... what exactly is the problem?

Well it turns out the problem is that I'm an idiot.

Normally, I don't have to log onto the computer, as I set it to log on to administrator on startup every time, given a password at startup. So, my surprise at seeing the startup screen was understandable. The reason I couldn't log on was that my log on (the one I was having so much trouble with) was different than the password I put in when turning on the computer.
