LittleBigPlanet: Water! Kraken Infested Pirates of the Caribbean Levels, 12-22-09
Posts
The rest of the level I could take or leave, but I am very proud of how my characters look.
Mogs since it tentatively looks like you're gonna be the winner you wanna go ahead and announce your theme now?
EDIT: Current tally, for what it's worth:
Mogs- 3
Speed- 1
David- 0

Speed, I agree with the others that your character designs were fing great. Unfortunately I found the level to be pretty frustrating, with the blackouts, the fuzzbot's plasma, and by the time I got to the 6th light or whatever and then lost my last life to the black smoke I just quit.
DavidThrax I actually had a weird problem when I first started - I would jump into the creatures mouth and land on top of the room inside. That happened twice so I quit. But then I saw you were getting 4*s and some hearts so I was like whaaaat? And tried again. Glad I did. I really liked reorienting the ship and that multi-stage enemy.
I think my vote is still for Mogs tho - just a fun factor there.
As a side note, I don't think the level I published this week is an actual entry. But it is definitely sci-fi and I would love some feedback on it if y'all don't mind : Intergalactic Planetary 2 : Jupiter (my PSN is EdS25). Actually, since it has a rocket, and aliens, and a magrail, and civil war, and genetic mutations, and a giant fucking spider, it really couldn't be any more sci-fi if it tried.

And yeah, it was fun playing with you and the others (Speed, your costume is aces), I just wish things had gone better, lag-wise. It was still fun, though.
EDIT: I'm going to go play so I can vote as well. I may not have won this yet!
If we wanna go ahead and announce me the victor, I will first stare in amazement for a few minutes.
...
M'kay. I'm actually debating on two themes; both I think we could do some pretty cool things with.
First- Historic or Semi-Historic battles.
Things that show up in my head would be battles from unification wars (China, Japan, USA, what have you), and I think with the Paintinator (for the levels based on modern or semi-modern wars) we'd be able to pull off a pretty good feel. Hu Lao Gate, Yi Ling, Chi Bi, for China War based levels all sound pretty epic to me on principle. Same with Sekigahara for Japan's Feudal Era.
Second- Heaven or Hell (Let's Rock! Couldn't help it >.>; )
We have ample resources to work with to make a level that looks like either place (Or both in one), and there's about a million ways you can do anything involving the two places, so it certainly does leave it open for a lot of creative things to go on.
I'm throwing both of these up here, because I can't honestly decide one or the other, since I already have some ideas for either theme. So since we'll all be making levels based on the theme, I figure we can go ahead and vote for which one we want to do.
Also, after playing it, I'm changing my vote to Ed's. So now we're tied at one each, and Darth has 2. Voting will stay open until around tomorrow afternoon, but yeah tentatively Darth's the winner.
...Actually, in the event that Darth votes for either me or Ed, we'll have a tie. How about we break it based on what the overall rating is for the two tied levels? If that's a tie too we can come up with something else.
Ed, your level was fucking tops. There were only two small problems I had with it.
The first was that it was a little confusing initially to figure out which layer the minboss's three attacks were coming from. Maybe if you color coded the platforms or something that would make it a lot better.
The second was that on the boss, he's big and scary looking, but he isn't any threat whatsoever. I actually died a lot while fighting him, but that was just because of the the impact bombs being finnicky (I really wish you could tweak how sensitive they are). If he had some attacks or something, I think it would be a much more epic finale.
Really though man, way to show everyone up.

Yeah I thought about color coding everything but decided that since they all had different attacks and it only takes a minute to orient yourself I decided against it. (Although it hasn't been getting many hearts and the main tag is frustrating so I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that I don't know much about it). Similar reasoning on the spider : I figured some plasma guns or something would just keep making you blow yourself up and be frustrating. But you're the 4th or 5th person to comment he's too easy.
I thought he said he wasn't going to be done in time.

Speed - Wow. That is a beautiful level. The designs were fantastic, and it was very well done. The start was great; every part of it; the pod, the introduction, the walking away from the introduction. I didn't manage to finish it, as I was just giving it the quick try and the Cop kicked my ass soundly. It was more or less the same experience I had with Robot Lincoln; I loved it even though I didn't manage to beat it. You make really good levels, and you make them really hard as well. I'll beat them someday! *Fist shake* You'll see!
DavidThrax - Your level was really well put together as well. At first, I just approached it like a level, and didn't even think about the sci-fi theme until I was about to jump into the creatures mouth. Then I went, "Buh?", did it, and saw where you were going. Nicely done. The ship turning was good, as was the boss, and the commentary. Your intercoms looked a -lot- better than mine. I enjoyed it immensely.
And I already expressed my opinions on Intergalactic Planetary 2, but for a little more in-depth on it:
I liked the text of it; the jokes weren't too corny and I enjoyed them a lot. Going through it, I don't remember having any problems, aside from that glitch part, and as I said, the MagRail fight was really really well done. It made me think the whole thing was actually moving, thought I realize how it was done now (more or less) so that was really impressive. and then the boss fight was Grade A as well.
For my vote, I'm going to give it to Ed for IP2, but Speed and David did fantastic as well. Personally, I think all three levels are leaps and bounds above mine, but I can't be mad if you guys liked them.
Edit: So it looks like we have a tie! >.>
Evidently my sense of what constitutes a difficult obstacle is skewed!
Also we now have a tie!
Out of curiosity Ed, what kinda level are we gonna be making if you win?
http://www.audioentropy.com/
Heh. Personally, the blackout is what makes that part of it difficult. It's so disorienting, because the off and on almost coincides with the time it needs to get from the safe point to where you can jump up and get him. I managed to run up to him in the dark on my last life, but that was a bad idea, as I think I got crushed, or just died. (Did he have a gas around the bottom of his body? I didn't pay attention to the death sound.)
What about instead of using impact explosives, use switch explosives rigged up to blow up when in contact with the leg? You could even encase them in black circles so they roughly looked like impact explosives. That way there's no accidental explosions and you can make the boss actually be threatening.

As far as the theme goes, I think I would concede to Darth. The heaven or hell sounds good to me although to be honest I'm not sure I'll be able to participate. I've spent a long time on IP so far because I'm unemployed, which I think needs to change here pretty soon before I go batshit crazy. When I'm wrapped up in level making, it's all I think about and I can barely sleep.
EDIT:
Just played Speed's, I echo how great his characters are, some of the best I've seen. The level was a bit difficult, the rotating light section comes to mind, it would have been easier if there was fewer of them. I also liked the long light elevator, that felt really Sci-Fi ish.
I still think I'll give my vote for EdS25. I enjoyed his level the most.
Speed, your characters are awesome, all of them, and I think a bi-weekly competition may be a better idea.
To whoever wins, I look forward to hearing what the next theme is.
Also, I'm putting in my vote for bi-weekly competitions, and my vote for Heaven and Hell. I promise I won't make a Guilty Gear level.
Steam: TheArcadeBear
For my vote, it's extremely close between DavidThrax's Rise of the LittleBigMachines and Ed's Intergalactic Planetary sequel.
I vote for Ed's.
El Fantastico - there should have been at least 2 more gongs before you got to the magrail so I'm not sure how you managed to avoid both. But if you managed it others might so I guess maybe I need an "unmissable" one. Also, during extensive testing it seemed to me that whether you tapped R1 or held it the nose cone always went high enough. . . i wonder if you dislodged it a little bit prior to launch and hit the side on your way out. I need to stop putting devices like that in my levels because they are simply too difficult to ensure 100% (even when you do it "right" the landing is always a little bit different too - you're actually supposed to land right by the house, not the nasty looking emitted platform I added for emergencies).

"Heaven version"
"Hell version"
"Heaven and Hell version"
And its like they have similar elements but they're very different because of how it plays out
(I'm definitely not creative enough to pull that off)
Can I just say again that everyone totally kicked ass with the sci-fi theme? I hearted every single entry.
edit:thanks speed and ed

Same here, but for me it's because I heart every PA level posted.
I don't think I have you friended actually, let's get on that
When I picked the theme, that's what I had in mind. As in levels about going to both, or centering around just one or anything of the like would be perfectly acceptable. It's Ed's call, really, but that's what I would imagine as well.
EDIT - Also, my level is pretty much going to be what unintentional was talking about. I'm gonna do some testing tomorrow to see if my main concept to switch them works.
