I bumped into my computer desk something to fall and hit my monitor. now it has what looks like a black smudge scratched into it. Is there any way to fix this? DIY or though a repair service.

I was about to give you a flat no, but then i found this on the google. If you try it, let me know how it turns out.
    Vaseline Method
    1. Clean the surface of the screen.
    2. Take some Vaseline and fill the scratch with it.
    3. Gently wipe off the excess Vaseline, being careful not to press too deeply so as to leave some inside the scratch.
    4. Voila. This works because the optical density more closely matches the LCD face than air.

Wow that's cool. Though I don't know if that will completely take care of it. It looks like it might have hit hard enough to cause tear behind the main filter, that or several pixels have shut off.

Yeah, that's actual damage to the LCD, not just the screen coating. You won't be able to repair it.
