iPod software access & compatibility

I have an iPod Nano 3rd gen 4GB.
I mainly use Ubuntu Linux, but I do have a Windows partition.
tl;dr: need 3rd party app. that's compatible with my model. (most don't seem to be)

Long, long ago, on my Windows partition, iTunes stopped working, not long after I had installed it. It never unbroke. (uninstalling and reinstalling changed nothing) I managed to get files onto it with some other application that wasn't very good.
Most of the apps I've tried to use, both in Windows and Ubuntu, don't seem to list my model. I think a lot of them must have errors in the version lists they have, since they'll have things like 3rd gen iPod Nanos that are 6GB or something crazy like that. (I forget exactly, but they don't match the info on wikipedia.) None of them seem to be able to connect to my iPod. I'm perfectly willing to wipe my iPod and start over again, but I'd really like to make sure I have an application that WORKS with it before I go and screw it up and undo hours of work.

PS: is there any way I can get a purple plastic cover for my iPod that's at least not made in China, and ideally also not horribly overpriced? I know that's asking a lot. Color, country of manufacture, and price. I ended up buying a USB MIDI cable that was purple and made in China just so that I could get color and price of my choosing.
