The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
So, I know we have done a thread like this before, but a new one is in order. What is the best deal you have gotten on a game, or gaming related items? It might be getting a rare game for cheap, or just something rare at all! What grabs are you most proud of?
I got a new copy of Psychonauts on xbox for 10 bucks today.
I saw it, and wasn't sure if it worked with BC...so I thought I'd come back, and if it was still there just risk it. I came back and it was gone :O I felt retarded. I should've just picked it up!
Then I saw it! Some other soul had picked it up and decided not to buy it!
Win
I also got all the penny-arcade books for about 60 dollars today. Australian. Which is good considering they are usually 30 dollars, each here.
Also, just about every great RPG or strategy game...I pay 60$...but shit, I put 40 hours into Fallout 3 already. There are games like Civilization 2 that I've been playing for years and years, and games like Red Alert 2 or Diablo 2 that I still manage to reinstall once every year or two.
DS lite + NSMB - £20 (very soon after the DS Lite came out)
oXbox plus 20 or so decent games - £50
RE4 Chainsaw controller - £5
Mass Effect - £7
Odama + Mic - £3
The Red Star - £3
Shadow of the Colossus - £8
Blue Dragon - £2.99 (but I don't like it)
GalCiv2 - £1.99
Probably a load more I can't remember
The Steam Christmas sale was pretty good this year too.
Edit: Oh yeah, I got a PS2 (slimline one) for free. A mate of mine had one and it broke, wouldn't power on at all, so he bought a replacement. Turned ou, when he tested the old one with his new cable, it was just a broken power brick. He said I could have it for free, but I would have to get my own controller + power cable.
I don't typically do well with prices, the best is when I get free stuff.
I already mentioned in the VC thread the copy of Castlevania 3 I got for free from a non-gaming friend.
Also when I was in 8th grade, I rode the bus with a squirrely 6th grade kid who had a box of NES games in his attic and back then, Playstation was all the rage so he didn't want them anymore. I was starting to realize the value of old games so I casually inquired about them and I think I got a whole box for like a dollar. Some great stuff in there, like Zelda, Bart vs. the Space Mutants, a number of the classic baseball games, and Silent Scope, a submarine simulator.
Also at this time I bought Pokemon Blue for $5 from a shady kid who had almost certainly stolen it. I didn't care! His squirtle was named Asscheeks or something, stupid kid didn't have what it takes to be a Pokemon master.
...This is kind of a tough thread, since I've been a CAGer for a long while now. Most of my game purchases rarely go above the $20 mark, and this is often for newer releases. Let's see...I purchased a copy of Parasite Eve for 50 cents recently? That was pretty nice...got both Fear Effects for less than $10. How about a free PSP (White Vader Slim) and several games?
Otherwise most of my current 360 library has been cheap. I nabbed several titles for about $12 or less apiece (BF: Bad Company, NG2, Pure, Vegas 2, Lego Indiana, Gears 1 Refresh, Grid)

Persona 1 for $11 from an online record store. I tend to pick up games for good prices (I'm patient) but I would call that one of my best steals. Well that and picking up Blue Dragon for my sister for $19 at a Target like 3 months after it came out.

I need to go shopping with you guys. I still consider my best gaming purchase Daggerfall for $20 back in 97. Not nearly as cheap, I suppose, but I played the hell out f that game for six years.
Just ones that I can think of off the top of my head:
I got myself a free PS3 (they were being bundled with all 1080p Bravias for a few months). On that topic I got the TV for 3250 when they were 4300 or so off the shelf.
Scored Gears of War 2 for free along with the Kung Fu Panda/Lego Indiana Jones Xbox 360 bundle.
The Darkness (used) for $15.20 AUD. Not rare or anything, but given it's not all *that* old, I was surprised to get it that cheap in a store (not eBay or something).
Gamecube for 200 AUD (new) when they were retailing everywhere else for 400. Harvey Norman was having its 10 or 25 year anniversary sale or some shit and just had a crazy price on it.
I got Lost Kingdoms and Bloody Roar Primal Fury on Gamecube as a bundle new for like 12 AUD or something. Neither of them were all that great by any means, but I got my money's worth and had plenty of mindless fun.
The Orange Box, when it was in beta (but buyable on Steam), was 44.95 USD, which given our dollar at the time only ended up being about 50 AUD. Yeah, yeah, doesn't sound special, but when new games retail from 100-120, I'll gladly pay 50 bucks for five awesome games that I've never played weeks before I can get it on the shelf. It was special to me, at least.
The best would have to be 8 years or so ago, buying a Super Nintendo, two controllers, fifteen games or so (everything working fine) for 60 AUD. I only bought it for Mario Kart, everything else was a bonus, and sweet fuck did I ever get my money's worth out of it. Still my favourite racing game ever (and NOT because it was the first in the series and I'm an old man, I prefer its racing mechanics!).
I guess it's harder to get good deals on new gaming related stuff Australia. Fuck our economy and fuck our ridiculously expensive market.
I managed to get a SEALED brand new copy of Jet Set Radio Future for xbox for $20. Game is pretty hard to find, especially sealed.
Also got 2 Dreamcast consoles (in extremely good condition.) for $30.
Mmmm....oh and i got a mint condition copy of Final Fantasy 7 with the black label out of a bargain bin for $14 a few months ago.
Nice work :winky:
I'm not usually prone to buying used games, but when they're no longer in print I'll take the chance. (Back in around 2000 I tried buying used games on E-Bay and got kind of screwed. Only takes once.)
Recently I bought:
-Sealed Freelancer and X-Wing Alliance (both I did own at one point, and lost either through moves or CD tragedies), each costing $19. I'd have paid $50 for the XWA. I am obsessed with XWA.
-Rise of Legends new and sealed, $19.
-Rise of Nations and RoN: Thrones and Patriots sealed for $9. These came on a special Ubisoft DVD with some English and Dutch writing on the back, suggesting it was some overstock for a European edition of the game. I now favor Europeans and the Dutch even more than previously.
Not-So-Recent:
-Mass Effect from Amazon.com for $30, new. Totally worth it. (About 3 months after release.)
-UT2k4 on steam I got it at $20, though I think there was a special weekend deal for $10 at some point. This was another title I had owned but the CDs of which had become compromised. Worth every penny.
-At the PX (my family's very military, and they still invite me to go on-base to avoid taxes) I got a Classic X-Box Titles 3-pack of GTA3, GTA:VC and GTA:SA for $20 total. No tax was just the icing on the cake. This was a few years ago. I did have these titles at their initial release but only for the PS2, and these would get more play on my 360 than any of the Console Launch titles. (Perfect Dark Zero was available for the same price, in its Special Edition box, but I considered that a waste of $20, except for the little comic.) All new.
-MarioKart DS from Amazon.com new at $20.
I've had other good deals, but a lot of them don't qualify as "Best Purchases". Relevant to note, I believe most games today aren't worth their price at launch. Used to get a lot more for your buck, but that's how it goes, and I'm used to it by now. It makes these deals all the sweeter.
Edit: Forgot that I got Rock n' Roll Racing for $5 at a Gamebro's, used. This was in ~1995. This game... this game was spectacular.
Oh yeah that remnds me. I got a couple of other things.
A PS2 Slim. Dual Shock 2. MegaMan X Collection. Parasite Eve. Legend of Dragoon. Free.
Phantom Dust for about 2 bucks. Silent Hill 3 for $10 bucks. Syphon Filter 1 -3 + Medievil 1-2 for, what, 20 bucks total? Homeworld 2 for $2. Grimgrimoire for $10. Actually probably a shitload of RPGs for PS2 for $10 here and there.

My brother snagging BioShock from Steam for a little over £3 made me quite jealous (as well as the entire Valve library for.. what was it, £40? Less than that? Insane deal).
Personally, maybe the Max Payne 2 LE for £5 brand new a few years back.
After seeing my 64DD my mate wanted one and paid about £450 for just the unit. Only when it turned up it was a developers unit (has a blue casing on the disk drive), complete with an unreleased level of an arcade shooter game. If that wasn't good enough he loaded up the game only to find out that Treasure were making it. Lucky bastard.

Cheapest games I've gotten were Mark Of Kri for US$7.50, Boktai for $5, and Psychonauts for $4 (the tag said $14.99, so it was a pleasant surprise when it rang up differently).

I snagged Bioshock off Steam for $5 because I'd borrowed the disc to install it on my Macbook Pro windows partition but I wanted to free up the space since I'd beaten it. I love love love the Steam system of buying a game to go with your account and then just downloading it whenever you want and not having to keep it all on your HD.

Just a few weeks ago I managed to take advantage of a flyer misprint and got Prince of Persia, Call of Duty: World at War, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Lost Odyssey for $60 total. Pretty fucking awesome deal if I do say so myself.
Oh, and I once got Beyond Good & Evil PC version for 99 cents. And a copy of FFII SNES in exchange for a burned copy of FF9 back when I was in the eighth grade.
