I remember going into a gamestop and seeing, then buying quickly, a copy of Xenogears for $10 when you couldn't find it for less than $50 anywhere else at the time. It was basically unused too. I can't believe someone would trade in that awesomeness.
-Black label Symphony of the Night five or so years ago for $10.
Incidentally, I grabbed this from a Gamestop, and the guy behind the register told me I was lame for buying a PS1 game. Perhaps he secretly wanted it for himself.
-A brand new copy of The Darkness for $5. Although, I suppose a lot of us did since it was a Black Friday special at one of the game stores.
-I got all three of the Shadow Hearts games for 30 dollars a few years ago.
Full price purchase of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Last copy on the shelf. Not only did I get a great and memorable RPG, but several years later after I had played it to death and it was starting to show its age, I sold it for over $100.
Heroine Anthem was another really good purchase. It's a Taiwanese PC RPG where the main character is a mermaid. Gorgeous 2D graphics. Cost the equivilent of about $10 USD and it even came with an art book/strategy guide. No clue how you would go about buying it outside of living in Taiwan though.
Last month I found Civ: Rev for the 360 at Target for $15. It was buried underneath those worthless Barbie PC games and third party PS2 controllers. I felt like I won the lottery.
Just this week the Blockbuster in my town has a buy one, get one free used videogame sale for games under $14.99, including games for current gen consoles. There were a lot of stinkers, but I snagged Virtua Fighter 5 for $10 and got Battle for Middle Earth II for free. Not bad considering just renting a game is $8.50.

Personally, I thought Civ: Rev 360 was the best game of last year. For $15? Yes, you did win the lotter.

It's definitely worth more than what I paid for it. I've had a blast with that game and there seems to be a plethora of playthroughs and scenarios, so high replay value (and I haven't even gotten into the multiplayer). The history lessons in the game are a nice touch as well.
Got the first Disgaea for 20$ new, less than a month later it shot back up to 60$ because atlus likes to underproduce stuff.
Oh yeah, and I got Resident Evil 4 for 20$ at a flea market, it was still 60$ otherwise at the time. Easily one of my favourite games I have for my wii right now. Yeah, it was used, but the guy apperently got it for his nephew, who already owned it and didnt want it, so the disc was in mint condition, with a manual, also in mint condition.
I got the second Metroid prime from the same guy, again, for 20$. I looked all around and could not find it anywhere, so I was damn lucky at the time.
What else, uhh, the Darkness for the PS3 new for 20$, I am yet to see it in any stores since. (local stores mind you, not amazon or anything like that)
And I snaged the Final Fantsay 12 colectors edition off ebay for 30$, the only problem with it was that the end video would crash, I beat the boss though, and just checked the video online, so it was still good. Other wise I would have paid about 40$ for the normal version used, 60$ new.
The first three Rachet and clank games, along with the first two jak/daxter games I got for 25$ or less. I had a blast with those games.
The remake of the first metal gear solid for the game cube I got for 20$, again, was super lucky on finding it, as I didnt even know it existed until I found it.
ANd the one that stands out most was that my brother got the 3rd metal gear solid for 12$, there was a few of them in those bins at EB games, were they usually put the older sports games and stuff. So while not rare or anything, possibly one of the best deals he ever made for gaming.
My dad got morrowind for the PC back when it was still fairly new for pretty cheap as well. He put easily over 800+ hours into it, I think I got like 200+ at the most, and my brother was about 200+ as well. He did the same thing for Oblivion and the dungeon siege games as well. Funny thing is, when I go see him we will still dig out the discs and we will play for a few hours together. And the first dungeon siege is like, what 6 or 7 years old now? Its even better when my other brother comes with me, we will make all our own charcters and plow through the game.
I traded some magic cards and $5 for my friend's SNES copy of Final Fantasy 3 back in the day.
Finding Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Knight Adventures, Breath of Fire I and II, Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG at an old video store for $3 each was pretty good.
As far as best bang for my buck, $30 for Burnout Paradise was a great investment considering I've probably played it more than any 3 games I've bought brand new for $60.
I usually buy games after they have been out for a couple of years.
Exceptions this (last?) Year were: Prince Of Persia and Mass Effect. My dad is a very avid game as well bought Fallout 3 and Dead Space so I had it pretty good.
Super Famicom Super Scope, complete in box, in near perfect condition. $7. Some guy must've offloaded his Super Famicom collection, because a friend of mine got Super Famicom Mario Paint, complete in box, in near perfect condition.
Oh, and Mother 2 for a dollar. In box. With instructions and maps.
I got a Sega Saturn in mint condition with Panzer Dragoon and bunch of other games and controllers... for free.
So is that. I wonder if I'm the only one who actually got one at retail.
For me, I guess it would be getting Thief: The Dark Project for Xbox for $3, and the PC version of Thief 2 for free(it was pennied out, so they gave it to me).
Guess I just need someone to pay me to own a copy of the first, and I'll be set.
Geometry Wars: Galaxies and NiGHTS for Wii for $9 each wasn't half bad, either. It's great having easy access to retail clearance sales.
Found Suikoden II at a flea market once for $12, practically new. And Killer7 for Gamecube for ~$9.
I once won a copy of Diablo 2 in a raffle in which I bought a ticket for 50 pence. That was a pretty sweet deal. Oh, and I got the a copy of Kings Bounty for the Megadrive for 1 pound from a friend.
Kings Bounty is awesome, both the original and the new one. I must have put hundreds of hours into those games!
I wanted to make this thread every time I score a hard-to-find or underappreciated title at a pawn shop - and here's the thread! I've been trying to "finish" my PS2 library for the past year, but a few PS3 deals came down the pike... none of these are impressive compared to a lot of earlier posts, mind you.
PS3
- The Darkness and
- Stranglehold, both $15 at an EB.
PS2
- the original Way of the Samurai just last week, $10
- I paid $40 for MGS3: Subsistence a few days later, but it was worth it. Metal Gear 1 and 2, man!
- $14 for Psychonauts
- $8 for ICO
- $7 for the original Siren
- $7 for Summoner
- $20 for a copy of Hulk Ultimate Destruction. Pricy? Sure. Worth it? Absolutely.
- $30, the release price, for the MGS Essentials Collection. I would never have gotten MGS1 if not for this package.
Chance on
'Chance, you are the best kind of whore.' -Henroid
i once traded a used copy of counterstrike on the xbox for a black gamecube, two controllers, and luigi's mansion. the kid hated the system so much he gladly took the shitty fps over a whole console.
this is the same kid who later traded me two years of xbox live for the pc version of halo CE
i loved middle school
I ended up getting Battlefield: Bad Company for the 360 for about 6 bucks. The jackass who happens to be related to me so I have to call him "brother" actually came through on my birthday and got me a $25 Wal-mart giftcard.
I don't know why Bad Company was only $30, I think it is pretty damn good so far.
Just a few days ago I got Shadow of the Colossus in more or less mint condition (the art cards inside look literally untouched) for about $7.00 US. Pretty happy about it personally.
Whoever won my Asian PS2 lot on eBay for under $150 got the gaming purchase of the lifetime. I would never have sold it, but I was out of work and needed money for bills so away it went. I forget all the details, but among other things, it included a Japanese slim PS2 in good condition, Japanese Persona 3, Chinese Siren 2, Japanese Summon Night 3, Chinese Sakura Taisen remake, Japanese Gradius 5, Japanese Final Fantasy 12, Japanese Rogue Galaxy, Chinese Rule of Rose, Japanese one of the Super Robot Taisen games, International version of Shadow of the Colossus, and a few random other games.
I've had a few deals so good, I consider them to be steals. None of these games are particularly rare, I just got really good deals on them.
$1.96 for X-Men Legends 1 on the Gamecube, sealed, in a Circuit City bargain bin a few years ago.
$1 for Viewtiful Joe 1, also Gamecube, sealed.
$4.75 for Dead or Alive Ultimate, sealed.
$7 (ha!) for Killer7, Gamecube, sealed. I couldn't resist because of the price matching the title. :P
My brother's the one who got lucky a lot. He managed to snag both Burning Rangers and Panzer Dragoon Saga new at Toys R Us when they came out.
Most of my Win95 games probably cost $10 or less new, because I tend to wait for price drops and love bargain hunting in the bins. Move the figure up to $20 and the same applies to my GBA, PSP, and DS games.
edit: Oh, I managed to find a sealed copy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time on my birthday last month for the oXbox, original cover, for $20 at a mom & pop game store. It's not an outrageously rare game or anything, but that's a good price for a sealed copy, and I really wanted to play it again.

PS3 Trophies
Ikaruga for GC for $50, new. Over 1 year after it was released. I couldn't even find it used before that.
I love that game to death.

$100 for the original and LoD, and I have no idea how many hours I put into them. Somewhere in the thousands.
Edit : Also I paid nothing for it. It was a gift.

I also got Final Fantasy 6 for Game Boy Advanced off e-bay for 10$ a few months ago, I'm very happy with that one.

3DS FC: 5343-7720-0490
It was when I was about 8-9, I played it and beat it, and it sat around in my room until I was about 13 and I found it was worth something.

Best Buy. It's on page 2. Hell of a deal.

Though you can't buy it online. In store only.
Link is for proof.
That was a nice way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of HL. Opposing Force and Blue Shift were also a dollar each during the christmas sale.
Some time ago I bought the PC versions of Crazy Taxi and Sonic Mega Collection Plus for 100 DKK combined. Google says that's 17.71700 U.S. dollars.
