Lately I've been playing a ton of Final Fantasy XII. This is remarkable (to me) because I've already beaten FFXII. But now despite having a 360 with a ton of new games, I'm going back to FFXII because I want to unlock a bunch of stuff, find a bunch of secrets, etc. I actually like grinding in that game. I like to overlevel myself and just be "stacked" when it comes to fighting. I can do it for hours.
Anyway, I've never played Crono Trigger (never had an SNES) and I'm wondering if I'd get the same satisfaction out of it that I get out of a game like FFXII? I was actually about to get Crono Trigger yesterday until reading that it's a relatively short game (20 hours?).
Is it deep, though? And I'm not just talking about having multiple endings. I don't really care about that. I'm wondering, does it have tons of stuff to do and find? I just get the sense that it steers you through the game without much chance to break off and do your own thing. But I could be wrong.
Imagine that you don't have the nostalgia factor for Crono Trigger and imagine it as someone coming off FFXII. How does it compare?
Speaking as another person who never played it back in the day, it's pretty dang good. When you get to the end of the game you can either fight the boss right away or undertake a number of big sidequests to get...more cool stuff. You can spend a long time stealing from the endgame enemies to get permanent stat-boosting items, and you can replay the game in New Game+ mode to start off with the same stats and try to beat the game extremely early. I've also heard the new dungeons are huge.
Chrono Trigger is only as short as 20 hours if you're doing it wrong.
The main quest can be pretty short, but it lasts more than 20 hours on a New Game. It's really more like 40+ for the main quest.
The game does steer you down a certain path. But, there's an obvious point where the game opens up, and you can try your hand at the game's great side-quests. It's not as free-form as FF XII. You have to remember that this is an SNES game, so there are technical restrictions. There aren't things like hunting marks or anything like that.
All of the side-quests relate to the plot or characters in some fashion, which I like. They actually have meaning beyond the typical almost-impossible challenge or meaningless grindfest that modern JRPGs suffer from (FF XII included...man, I hated those hunts). The side-quests are best described as meaty. There are only a certain number of them, but they're pretty damn filling.
It's been a while since I last beat it, but if memory serves, it took me 60-80 hours to do it. Then again, I did almost everything in the game.
I'm a pretty big fan of the Chrono series, so I suggest you get it. Its plot holds up even today, most likely because the game has a pretty tight focus on what it wants to be, and how it wants to tell its story. The characters are two-dimensional, but charming and endearing. They all have distinct personalities, and are mostly enjoyable to interact with. And, Magus is the fucking man.
Note: I'm talking about the original SNES version. I don't own the DS version, so I'm not sure if the new dungeon(s) are as good as the original side-quests.
It doesn't have as much side stuff as FF12, but if you like JRPGS it's a must. Even speaking as someone who has it for both the SNES and DS I can still say it's a great game, nostalgia aside. I don't know if I can say which is better, they're pretty different in a lot of ways, but Chrono Trigger is definitely one of the top RPGS on the SNES, and it still holds up these days.
Ohio from Ohio, if you like grinding so much you should probably try World of Warcraft. Or kill yourself.
The joy I get from Chrono Trigger has absolutely nothing to do with that stuff, and I doubt someone with your taste for that would find its value to be exceptional when compared to other games of its ilk.
I'd recommend getting the DS version over the SNES version if you're interested.
The extra content is a disappointment compared to the other side quests, but it adds more bosses and an extra difficulty to your first playthrough. The DS version also boasts wonderful extras like the bestiary, tech dojo (where you can see pictures of each tech you learn), movies from the Playstation version, a jukebox (the best addition), and some other neat options. A lot of the parts of CT may seem cliche by today's standards, but this game set the bar for great JRPG's to come. If you play RPG's at all, get this game.
I also never played Chrono Trigger back in the day, and I got it for Christmas for the DS. It's been a blast so far. I'm about 13 hours into the game..haven't gotten bored yet. I'm pretty new to RPGs...aside from Pokemon, all I've played is Final Fantasy I, II, III, IV and VI. But Chrono Trigger is easily my favorite so far of the games that I've played in the Genre. No random battles is a godsend. And the game actually gives you enough MP so you can use it without fear of running out.
I'd say go for it....There's tons of stuff to do..the game has 13 endings, after all!

I got the game for the DS having never been able to play it before (I had the sega growing up) and well, like Ive already said to my friends who shake their heads in disbelief. This game has taken my top spot for RPGs over FF7, and I LOVE FF7. The first day I tried the game I played for a bit, around an hour then put it down. The next day the story and everything really picked up and just blew me away and then (13 hours later) I realized I had spent my entire day playing.
I fucking love this game. Also, Im at around 32 hours and Ive been at the last boss for a while now, but Im trying to finish every sidequest, get all the super equipment and all that stuff before fighting him. I tried to fight him recently (around level 50 or so) and got pretty badly destroyed, but at that time I didnt have the side quests done and also I was only doing it to show my friend something so I basically sat there while he pummeled me...
Anyways though I really love this game. Soooo much. I say get it. I would have to believe youll love it. I never got bored in the game in the whole 32 hours I have, and the combat system is fantastic, I cant believe it hasnt really been used past this game.

I played it a ton back in the day, but I will say this - It is the only old game I have EVER played that didn't feel old 10 years later. It felt new and innovative and unique. I can't say that about even my favorite games. I would suggest, without reservation, that any RPG fan would enjoy Chrono today.
Chrono Trigger DS is worth getting for the DS for the main quest alone. I thought the new content was pretty meh, particularly the first of the two dungeons, but it would have been worth the money if it had been a direct port from the SNES version with no new content at all.
In the absence of a proper CT thread (well there's the LP, but yeah...) I guess I'll ask this here:
When the hell do I get/learn Triple Techs? I just got to the chapter called
Lavos Beckons
, I'm at about level 35, and I still don't have any Triple Techs. Is there something I have to do to learn them? I've been using Chrono, Frog, and Ayla as my party....

Chrono Trigger is like every other JRPG except that it is better in pretty much every way.
There is tonnes of stuff to do, and although it is apparently short (I personally think it's pretty long), there are lots of vastly different areas, it never gets stale.
Edit: and a shit load of awesome sidequests. The better sidequests are actually better than the main quest.
It's been a long time since I've played, but I'm pretty sure Triple Techs appear automatically as long as all 3 members of your party have the individual skills necessary for that triple tech. Try changing your party.

Barring certain ones that delve into spoilers, you're right. I'm pretty sure the Crono/Ayla/Frog one needs Frog's last skill, so that's probably why he hasn't seen it yet.
Oh and thinking back on it, I think I know the main reason why Chrono Trigger is so loved, even today. It's fast paced. Most RPGs these days are glacially slow.

Chrono, frog, and robo should be the first triple tech you learn. As others said before, after you complete any battle with a party, any dual/triple techs they can use (with the single techs they already have) should automatically appear.

Alright, so it looks like I've just been using the wrong party for Triple Techs. I'll switch things up...
Oh, and I'll agree about the game being fast-paced...I'm 15 hours in and haven't been able to put the thing down. Most RPGs I've played before I would get bored after about 10 hours and forget the game for about 6 months...
Which reminds me, I still need to finish FF VI.

fantastic music, fun and accessible combat, great characters, awesome story, great sidequests that open up later, new game + so you can carry over your cool stuff and add to it a second time through....yeah the game is amazing. I did play it back in the day, but man playing it on DS was every bit as awesome as it was then.

The first triple tech I learned the first time I played the game (back when it was released) was Arc Impulse. The first time I actually used it was in the fight with Giga Gaia.
Of course, I was never a big fan of Robo because of how slow he was. And for
Magus' Castle
Ice Water is awesome against almost every enemy except those that are healed by it, and they are few in number so he never got used there.

If you don't like Chrono Trigger, something is wrong with you. This is indisputable fact.
I would have to agree with this. Just played it for the first time ever, and its easily one of the best RPGs I've ever played. I'm considering replaying it right away... which is something I normally don't do with RPGs.

They were basically my standard team for the first playthrough or two. After many New Game+s I started using Crono, Frog, and Ayla. While I'm sure that everyone has their own equipment prefs, the males usually got their best weapon (Rainbow and Masamune), Haste Helms, Nova Armor, and PrismSpecs. Ayla got Prism Dress and Helm and PrismSpecs.
If I start a fresh game the equipment is basically the same since you can steal a second Haste Helm and can get Prism Dresses for all the ladies and six Prism Helms (Magus just wears his special items from a sidequest). Gold Studs for everyone (stolen, of course). Speaking of that, Gold Studs are probably one of the top three accessories in the game.

I like how there are no random enemy encounters... man... I HATE random enemy encounters.
A lot of the monsters in Chrono Trigger can be avoided just by walking around them, sometimes you have to do something special, like that mean ogre that ambushes you, also, keep in mind, if you are standing still, the monsters won't fight you even if their sprite overlaps yours!! So sometimes just wait for them to walk by you, giggle and then keep walking.
Maybe all of them can be avoided? I have no idea... I thought it was impossible to avoid this one Mutant in 2300AD, but then one day I avoided it somehow... That was a good day.
Not all, but most - there are still unavoidable non-boss triggers in certain portions of the game.
Yeah, if you love RPG's you will love Chrono Trigger. FFXII is a much different game though and really compares more with World of Warcraft (but single player obviously) because it's a complete grindfest. But Chrono sucks you in with it's story and characters. About half way through FFXII, you forget what your even fighting for or who your characters are. Chrono grabs your attention and never let's it go. You must play this game.
